HAPPY NEW YEAR! 

Ringing in the new year with a look back at the old 

Here’s a toast to the New Year and a look back at 2012, 

courtesy of the Journal staff. For many it was a year of 

change, of hard work, of big announcements and celebrations. 

A special notice was given to a few of the many groups 

and organizations who make Point Place “The Best Place 

Anyplace.” We thank the members of the Point and Shoreland 

community who shared their stories with us during the 

past year … 

March–The fourth annual Super Duper Bake Sale and 

Raffle was held at the Lucas County Recorder’s Office. The 

event raised more than $1,300 for the Friendship Park 

Community Center and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Pictured 

are Lucas County Recorder Jeanine Perry and Toledo 

Mayor Michael Bell with some of the baked goods sold at 

the event. 

May–Winners of the Point Place Business Association 

Scholarship were announced. Winners Justin Vasquez a 

graduate of the Maritime Academy of Toledo; Joshua 

Gedert, Cardinal Stritch High School; Justin Kay, St. 

Francis de Sales; Sarina Schrader, Woodward; Emily 

Guth, Cardinal Stritch; and Mercedes Carsten, Woodward, 

are pictured with Dr. Gail Sanderson and Jessica 

Luce, members of the PPBA Scholarship Committee. 

Funding for the scholarship is provided by the PPBA’s 

annual golf outing, private donors and local organizations. 

June–The Point Place Days celebration kicked off with the annual parade on 

June 2. More than 70 entries and 1,000 participants lined Summit Street to 

enjoy the parade with the theme “The Point: A Place For All Seasons.” Members 

of the Riverview Yacht Club are pictured with their float. 

January–The Visions of Cullen Park group celebrated the completion of the dredging 

project at Cullen Park. The project took five months to complete and made possible 

the creation of a boating channel from the park to the main stem of the Maumee River. 

February–The St. John the Baptist Parents Association held its inaugural Snowflake 

Ball in the school gymnasium. More than 127 girls in grades preschool to 8 enjoyed a 

special evening with their fathers. The event included dancing, photo opportunities and 

winter-themed refreshments. 

April–The Point Place Business Association held its 37th annual Easter Egg Hunt. 

Beautiful weather, an abundance of eggs, donations of prizes and an estimated crowd of 

more than 1,200 people contributed to the success of the event. There were more than 

1,600 plastic eggs filled with candy spread throughout the park for children to gather. 

Each participant received a prize. At least four grand prizes–valued at more than $20 each - 

–were given to children in five age categories. 

July–An Anchor, donated by the Ken Socie family, was installed and 

dedicated at Cullen Park. The anchor was dedicated to the memory of 

Mr. Socie’s parents Fritz and Em Socie. Councilwoman Lindsay 

Webb, second from left, Ken Socie, second from right, and his siblings, 

cut the ribbon at the anchor dedication.

cross stitch. Her greatest joy

Louise Bauroth Gilles,

1927 in Springfield, Ohio. 

She graduated from Woodward 

High School in 1945. 

She worked for many years 

at Home Building and Savings 

in the loan department 

and then at Libbey-Owens- 

Ford as secretary to the design 

department. She 

married Louis Gilles on August 

25, 1956. 

She was a 50+ year member 

of Messiah Lutheran 

Church and in the 1970s 

served as a greeter. She also 

made a poinsettia decoration 

for the church cross that was 

used for several years at 

Christmas time. She volunteered 

as librarian at Kleis 

Elementary and Point Place 

Junior High Schools while 

her children attended. In her 

retirement years, she and her 

husband traveled to all 50 

states and Canada. She also 

loved to crochet and made 

hats, scarves and afghans for 

her family and friends. 

She is survived by her 

husband Louis; son, Louis 

(Harriet) Gilles; daughter, 

Diane (Thomas) Pauwels; 

sister-in-law Gertrude 

“Trudy” Bauroth, nephew,

September–The community 

mourned the passing 

of Howard Pinkley on

December–Messiah Lutheran Church held a blessing of the quilts during worship
