Ringing in the new year with a look back at the old<br />

Here’s a <strong>to</strong>ast <strong>to</strong> the New Year and a look back at 2012,<br />

courtesy of the <strong>Journal</strong> staff. For many it was a year of<br />

change, of hard work, of big announcements and celebrations.<br />

A special notice was given <strong>to</strong> a few of the many groups<br />

and organizations who make <strong>Point</strong> Place “<strong>The</strong> Best Place<br />

Anyplace.” We thank the members of the <strong>Point</strong> and <strong>Shoreland</strong><br />

community who shared their s<strong>to</strong>ries with us during the<br />

past year …<br />

March–<strong>The</strong> fourth annual Super Duper Bake Sale and<br />

Raffle was held at the Lucas County Recorder’s Office. <strong>The</strong><br />

event raised more than $1,300 for the Friendship Park<br />

Community Center and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Pictured<br />

are Lucas County Recorder Jeanine Perry and Toledo<br />

Mayor Michael Bell with some of the baked goods sold at<br />

the event.<br />

May–Winners of the <strong>Point</strong> Place Business Association<br />

Scholarship were announced. Winners Justin Vasquez a<br />

graduate of the Maritime Academy of Toledo; Joshua<br />

Gedert, Cardinal Stritch High School; Justin Kay, St.<br />

Francis de Sales; Sarina Schrader, Woodward; Emily<br />

Guth, Cardinal Stritch; and Mercedes Carsten, Woodward,<br />

are pictured with Dr. Gail Sanderson and Jessica<br />

Luce, members of the PPBA Scholarship Committee.<br />

Funding for the scholarship is provided by the PPBA’s<br />

annual golf outing, private donors and local organizations.<br />

June–<strong>The</strong> <strong>Point</strong> Place Days celebration kicked off with the annual parade on<br />

June 2. More than 70 entries and 1,000 participants lined Summit Street <strong>to</strong><br />

enjoy the parade with the theme “<strong>The</strong> <strong>Point</strong>: A Place For All Seasons.” Members<br />

of the Riverview Yacht Club are pictured with their float.<br />

January–<strong>The</strong> Visions of Cullen Park group celebrated the completion of the dredging<br />

project at Cullen Park. <strong>The</strong> project <strong>to</strong>ok five months <strong>to</strong> complete and made possible<br />

the creation of a boating channel from the park <strong>to</strong> the main stem of the Maumee River.<br />

February–<strong>The</strong> St. John the Baptist Parents Association held its inaugural Snowflake<br />

Ball in the school gymnasium. More than 127 girls in grades preschool <strong>to</strong> 8 enjoyed a<br />

special evening with their fathers. <strong>The</strong> event included dancing, pho<strong>to</strong> opportunities and<br />

winter-themed refreshments.<br />

April–<strong>The</strong> <strong>Point</strong> Place Business Association held its 37th annual Easter Egg Hunt.<br />

Beautiful weather, an abundance of eggs, donations of prizes and an estimated crowd of<br />

more than 1,200 people contributed <strong>to</strong> the success of the event. <strong>The</strong>re were more than<br />

1,600 plastic eggs filled with candy spread throughout the park for children <strong>to</strong> gather.<br />

Each participant received a prize. At least four grand prizes–valued at more than $20 each -<br />

–were given <strong>to</strong> children in five age categories.<br />

July–An Anchor, donated by the Ken Socie family, was installed and<br />

dedicated at Cullen Park. <strong>The</strong> anchor was dedicated <strong>to</strong> the memory of<br />

Mr. Socie’s parents Fritz and Em Socie. Councilwoman Lindsay<br />

Ohio offers specialized<br />

bereavement support<br />

groups. Conducted by specially<br />

trained bereavement<br />

counselors, the groups are<br />

specifically designed <strong>to</strong><br />

address the unique needs of<br />

varying age groups and<br />

types of loss.<br />

All groups are conducted<br />

at one of Hospice of Northwest<br />

Ohio’s facilities in Perrysburg,<br />

assure the best possible<br />

group experience for participants,<br />

79. She had worked as a secretary<br />

for the Lucas County<br />

Board of Elections retiring in<br />

1994. She was a member of<br />

St. John the Baptist Catholic<br />

Church, worked as a Girl<br />

Scout leader and room<br />

mother, both at St. John’s<br />

while her children attended,<br />

and she enjoyed counted<br />

cross stitch. Her greatest joy<br />

was spending time with her<br />

family and friends.<br />

by her husband of 58 years,<br />

Louise Bauroth Gilles,<br />

85, died Saturday, December<br />

22, 2012. She was the first in<br />

her family <strong>to</strong> be born in the<br />

United States on January 10,<br />

1927 in Springfield, Ohio.<br />

She graduated from Woodward<br />

High School in 1945.<br />

She worked for many years<br />

at Home Building and Savings<br />

in the loan department<br />

and then at Libbey-Owens-<br />

Ford as secretary <strong>to</strong> the design<br />

department. She<br />

married Louis Gilles on August<br />

25, 1956.<br />

She was a 50+ year member<br />

of Messiah Lutheran<br />

Church and in the 1970s<br />

served as a greeter. She also<br />

made a poinsettia decoration<br />

for the church cross that was<br />

used for several years at<br />

Christmas time. She volunteered<br />

as librarian at Kleis<br />

Elementary and <strong>Point</strong> Place<br />

Junior High Schools while<br />

her children attended. In her<br />

retirement years, she and her<br />

husband traveled <strong>to</strong> all 50<br />

states and Canada. She also<br />

loved <strong>to</strong> crochet and made<br />

hats, scarves and afghans for<br />

her family and friends.<br />

She is survived by her<br />

husband Louis; son, Louis<br />

(Harriet) Gilles; daughter,<br />

Diane (Thomas) Pauwels;<br />

sister-in-law Gertrude<br />

“Trudy” Bauroth, nephew,<br />

William (Sue) Bauroth;<br />

make Caroling in the Park a<br />

night <strong>to</strong> remember.<br />

We are now serving lunch<br />

here at the center again Monday<br />

through Thursday, at the<br />

still need at least 15 people<br />

per day for lunch. Please continue<br />

know by noon a day ahead so<br />

December–Messiah Lutheran Church held a blessing of the quilts during worship<br />

services on Sunday, December 9. Volunteers work year round <strong>to</strong> make the quilts which<br />

are then donated <strong>to</strong> Mustard Seed <strong>to</strong> be given <strong>to</strong> families in need. Pictured at work are<br />
