Page 4 —January 9, 2013 — PERRYSBURG MESSENGER JOURNAL ODOT gives tips for winter driving As Ohioans get ready to drive in the first possible winter storm this season, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) warns motorists: “In Ice and Snow, Take It Slow,” especially on interstates and state-maintained highways where speeds are faster and traffic volumes are higher. Research shows by the time the first winter storm hits, most motorists have forgotten their safe winter driving skills. “Because of last year’s mild winter, many of Ohio’s motorists haven’t driven in significant ice and snow in about 20 months,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. ODOT will make history this winter by being the first state in the nation to use greencolored strobe lights on its snowplow trucks. Studies show green lights are more easily detected by the human eye than other colors. The new green lights, along with new white lights, will be added to the existing amber lights creating a color combination unique to ODOT. During last year’s winter season, there were 16,167 winter-related crashes on Ohio’s roadways. Ice and snow related fatalities on ODOT-maintained roads decreased by nearly 20 percent– from 21 to 17. Although crashes on ODOT-maintained roads make up only 33 percent of all snow and ice crashes, in the 2011-12 winter season, nearly 57 percent of all winter driving related fatalities occurred on Interstates, U.S. Routes and State Routes. This year’s Winter One Acts are slated to open January 24. During The Winter One Acts, the PHS crews work in an extremely tight area, which requires a high level of teamwork and professionalism. The crew members strive to make each performance the best it can be. The intimate theatre setting features a selection of one act plays ranging from comedy to drama, and this talented crew rises to the challenge. This year’s stage manager is Morgan Shank with Wesley Blanco and Melissa Krausnick serving as assistant stage managers. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, these classes will take place throughout 2013, providing opportunities for local residents to learn life-saving skills from certified instructors. The American Heart Association’s CPR and AED learning programs are designed to help increase survival rates of those stricken by cardiac arrest. Fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR help during the critical four to six minute period after an incident. Almost 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests happen in the home, and 92 percent of victims don’t survive, often because people around them do not take action and begin CPR. Classes are limited to 20 students, and registration is required. The following classes will be offered in 2013: Family and Friends CPR, from 6 to 8 p.m. on January 16, May 15, July 17, or September 18. This is a free class, but registration at the library information desk is required. Participants may wish to buy a book for $5. Marciniak-Kusner engagement announced Julie Kusner, daughter of Mark and Theresa Kusner of Toledo, and Robert “Rob” Marciniak, son of Lee and Barbara Marciniak of Rossford, announce their engagement. Julie is a graduate of Toledo Central Catholic High School, and a 2011 graduate of the University of Toledo. She is employed as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital. Rob is a 2001 graduate of Rossford High School, and a 2003 graduate of Owens Community College. He is employed by Walgreens Distribution Center and the Rossford Fire Department. A June 2013 wedding is being planned. Alvin “Alvie” Perkins will celebrate his 80th birthday on January 11, 2013. Alvie was born in Perrysburg. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, worked as a plumber, pipefitter and welder, and has spent 40 years in public service in Wood County. TMA director to speak on ‘Censorship and the Arts’ Dr. Brian Kennedy, Toledo Museum of Art director, will speak at Way Public Library on “Censorship and the Arts,” on Tuesday, January 15, at 7 p.m. Censorship, the exercise of control of information within a society, has been oftemployed to effect the output of artists. Vocational School Purposes Local School Purposes 2012 Total Tax Rate Beekeeping classes offered The Maumee Valley Beekeepers will offer a two part beginning beekeeping class on January 15 and February 19, at 7 p.m. The classes will be held at the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg. The classes will cover how to get started in the art of beekeeping and help beginners through their first year. The classes are free and open to all. For more information, call Roger Myers at 419-875-6399. The classes will be canceled if Wood County is under a Level 1 or higher snow emergency.
