Will a lower cost levy restart the engine on public transportation?
➧Continued from page 1
Ride Right was extremely
helpful in providing ridership
information to city
administrators.
The ridership information,
said Mr. Grayson, was
invaluable and allowed the
changes in the cost of the
system.
“If you sat down and
told us a year ago that this
is what we could do now
and would actually work,
none of us would have
believed it,” said the councilor.
“I got chided for suggesting
that this was a
$600,000 problem. It is a
lot less than that– none of
us fully knew. We didn’t
know until we put the
wheels to the ground. And
until you have that service
and getting the real concrete
data with real passengers
and real route times
and all that information that
Refuse Improvements
and Benefits
•The city anticipates an
increase in recycling volumes,
resulting in lower garbage volumes
and in turn, saving landfill
tipping fees for garbage.
This is conservatively estimated
to increase recycling vol-
Letters policy
Ride Right gave us in that
interim period. That knowledge
right now is invaluable
and allowed us to get
lean.”
Carol Russell, president
of the Perrysburg Area
League of Women Voters,
expressed concerns on the
amount of the levy. She
stated that originally the
gap period service was for
ADA only and residents did
not realize after the initial
first two weeks, Ride Right
offered the service to all
residents.
“So there may not be an
accurate reading of what
the use may really be,” she
told council. “And because
of this, the league believes
a 1-mill levy is not too
much to ask.
“Our feeling is it [the
November levy] didn’t go
down–there was a lot of
misinformation and we
Automated refuse and recycling
•Lids on trash containers
keep rain and snow out of the
garbage. This moisture adds
weight to the garbage which
translates into increased landfill
tipping fees caused by
water weight.
Less Litter in Neighborhoods
on Collection Days
•Lids on the toters prevent
animals and the wind from
spreading trash into the neighborhood.
Card of Thanks
I want to thank all the volunteers who teamed
up with Commodore Way and Rick Ruffner’s O-
Deer Diner to help make the Perrysburg Christians
United food and toy drive a huge success. Especially,
the Perrysburg Messenger Journal, Downtown
Perrysburg Inc., Perrysburg Area Arts Council,
PCU volunteers, Santa’s photographers, Santa
letter writers, Perrysburg firefighters, parade volunteers,
teenage volunteers, Santa and all the businesses
that were collection points.
There are a few “kids with Santa” pictures that
have not been picked up. The pictures will remain
posted on Rick Ruffner’s O-Deer Diner window
through January 14. These pictures are free to parents.
Again, thanks everyone who helped to make
this a very happy and merry Christmas for a lot of
folks.
The weekly deadline for Letters to the Editor is noon on Friday. Letters
should be limited to 300 words. Letters from the same writer will be accepted no
more frequently than every 30 days.
Due to limited space, coverage of community news, and production costs,
only two letters regarding a certain issue will be printed each week. Time and
space permitting, all other letters will be posted on the newspaper’s web site,
www.perrysburg. com.
The newspaper reserves the right to accept or reject letters, and to edit them
for clarity and length.
All letters need a signature of the writer and an address and phone number
for verification before publishing.
think it has a good possibility
of passing if we can
really educate the community
on some of the confusion
that was on the ballot.
“Our concern is that if
we short-side ourselves in
terms of what we are offering
and then have to go
back on the ballot and ask
again. A 1-mill is not too
much to ask for in terms of
rather than being shortsided
in the long run. I
thought it was important to
bring this to you.”
Resident Kevin Rantanen
agreed with Ms. Russell
and added, “my concern
is that we are going to
make this good and we will
have to go for another
levy.”
Mayor Nelson Evans
said that is a good problem
to have, but also stated that
Ride Right indicated that a
0.7-mill levy would be ade-
Another great event brought to you by DPI
Winterfest 2013 micro brew and wine tasting tickets now on sale
Once again, on the
weekend of February 22-
24, the streets of downtown
Perrysburg will
come alive with excitement,
family-fun activities,
ice carvings of every
imaginative design and
two nights of music, food
and everyone’s favorite
micro brew or wine.
Downtown Perrysburg,
Inc. (DPI) along with Ed
Schmidt of Perrysburg
will present the annual
Winterfest 2013, a National
Ice Carving Association
sanctioned event. More
than two dozen world
champion professional and
amateur ice carvers will
compete for prize money
and then display their ice
creations.
“We are so very
pleased to have Ed
Schmidt once again, as our
overall event sponsor.
Without Ed Schmidt, Winterfest
would not be possible,”
said Kerry Wellstein,
DPI president, also
emphasizing that DPI has
many community partners
to assist with the familyfree
events and activities,
and all financial support is
privately raised, such as
the proceeds from Winterfest.
More than 50 ice carvings
sponsored by area
businesses and organizations
also will line both
sides of Louisiana Avenue
for the viewing.
The large ice sculptures
at Winterfest are a source
of income and a major
attraction, added Rob
Brunner, DPI vice president/treasurer
and Winterfest
chairman.
“It’s a big part of how
we raise the necessary
funds for the event,” he
said. “For $250, a business
or organization can have
an ice sculpture custommade.
Last year the pieces
were conversation starters
and essentially advertising
that would pay for itself in
word of mouth.”
Friday evening, 6 to 10
p.m., will feature a Micro
Brew Tasting, highlighting
24 different specialty
beers inside a heated
enclosed tent on West Second
Street at Louisiana.
There will be free food,
music and ice carving
demonstrations.
Tickets are $10 each
and include eight free
micro brew tastings. There
also is the opportunity to
reserve a table of ten for
$120.
Saturday night, from 6
to 10 p.m., hosted by Heidelberg
Distributing, will
feature more than 24 specialty
wines, music, Taste
of Perrysburg by area
restaurants plus the
National Ice Carving
awards ceremony.
Tickets are $25 a person
which includes unlimited
wine tasting. There is
also the opportunity to
reserve a table of 10 for
$250.
