Page 8 Perrysburg Area Chamber of Commerce 105 West Indiana Avenue • 419-874-9147 www.perrysburgchamber.com The Perrysburg Area Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary association of business people from throughout the Perrysburg area and Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The Chamber in partnership with the community, is committed to the support of business growth and economic vitality of its members and the Perrysburg area. The organization’s mission statement is to “provide a forum, conduit and voice for business and community issues. The Chamber will strive to create, enhance and preserve the economic strength and quality of life in the Perrysburg area.” A 501(c)(6) organization, the Chamber was incorporated in 1968. Paul Sargent of Sargent & Associates served as the first president. Currently there are more than 300 area businesses that are members of the Chamber. “We are honored to have many members who have received awards and honors in their respective professions,” said Sandy Latchem, executive director. “Many are also involved in other civic groups working for the betterment of our community.” The Chamber receives hundreds of inquiries each month concerning area businesses, Ms. Latchem said, and only refers business to its members. “We are committed to providing opportunities to help our members succeed in their businesses. We offer many tools including business networking events, advertising opportunities and health insurance discounts,” explained Ms. Latchem. Throughout the year, the Chamber also sponsors events designed to showcase the contributions of its members to the public. The chamber holds meetings for its members on the third Wednesday of every month (excluding July and September) and new members are always welcome. Networking and educational seminars for members are also scheduled at various times throughout the year. Among the Chamber’s annual events are a golf outing and cohosting the Harrison Rally Day festival in September. Originally located in the basement of the City Municipal Building, the Convention & Visitors Bureau is now established in an easily accessible, fully staffed office in Perry’s Landing in downtown Perrysburg. It is the mission of the Perrysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote Perrysburg as a visitor destination area. “We market Perrysburg to cultural, educational, historical, trade and other similar organizations to encourage them to visit Perrysburg’s historical sites and to patronize our restaurants, retail establishments, hotels and motels,” said Sandy Latchem, the Bureau’s Executive Director. The CVB responds to a variety of written, phone, online and walk-in requests for relocation, visitor, tour, and general information about Perrysburg. In 2009 the Convention & Visitors Bureau distributed approximately 12,000 copies of the Perrysburg Visitors’ Guide, responded to almost 500 requests for relocation and visitor information, and processed an additional 500 requests for maps. The Perrysburg Visitors Guide is distributed free of charge throughout the greater Toledo area, including such prime locations as The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Travel Centers, AAA of Northwest Ohio, SeaGate Convention Center, Erie Street Market, and area hotels and motels. The CVB manages the popular Perrysburg Farmer’s Market, which is in its 12th season of operation in downtown Perrysburg. The market is open every Thursday from 3-8 p.m. beginning the week before Mother’s Day until mid October and boasts upwards of 35 vendors. The Perrysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau is primarily funded by a percentage of the hotel/motel tax collected by the City of Perrysburg from the hotels and motels contained within its boundaries. The CVB is governed by a nine member Board of Trustees and consists of three Trustees representing the City of Perrysburg; three Trustees representing local commercial business; and three Trustees representing the local hotel/motel industry. Building on his experience performing appraisals for Ohio government agencies, he is working to establish himself with federal agencies as well. Knight Preserve 29530 White Road • 419-661-1697 Visitors experience a variety of wildlife as they walk along the trails at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve. A few wing beats from the Maumee River, the Preserve invites songbirds, eagles, and waterfowl to look for food and nesting sites and is a welcome resting spot during migration. Colorful dragonflies sparkle over the water, as swallows bank and swoop, and young people fish nearby in the warmth of summer. The prairie’s native wildflowers are in their glory just as fall begins. Winter brings ice skating, cross-country skiing, and school groups looking at animal tracks in the snow. The Nature Center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. It offers year-round nature experiences with the Look Out On Nature Area, or LOONA, where (from within the building) visitors can view birds and other wildlife at feeders, in native gardens, and at water features. Opportunities for hands-on nature activities are available to the public as well as school groups in the Educational Classroom. Visitors may enjoy some relaxing, quiet time with a book in the Library. This space doubles as a meeting area for small groups. The Hankinson Great Room, available for rentals, has a serving-kitchen, fireplace, and acccomodates up to 125 people. William Windus Knight was a local businessman, philanthropist, and nature enthusiast. His grandchildren donated this 42-acre parcel to the Wood County Park District in 1993. The Country Garden Club of Perrysburg saw its potential with its mature woodlot and location near the Maumee River. Be sure to experience all that Wood County Parks has to offer.
