PROGRESS IN PERRYSBURG–JULY 2010 Page 29 “Your Hometown Newspapers” Perrysburg Messenger Journal Rossford Record Journal Holland-Springfield Journal Point and Shoreland Journal The Perrysburg Messenger Journal began publication on March 10, 1853, disseminating news and information in Perrysburgh, a river town surrounded by the Great Black Swamp. With a population of about 1,800, Perrysburgh was the county seat. The Perrysburg Messenger (1935) and the Perrysburg Journal merged in 1965. Robert and Dorothy Welch have owned the newspaper since 1969. Its staff has grown from a two-man operation with an apprentice (printer’s devil) to a staff of more than 29 full-time and part-time employees. The newspaper has evolved over the years from a patchwork of national/state/local news to a newspaper with an emphatically local focus. Over the years, the staff has grown from a two-man operation with an apprentice, or “printer’s devil,” to 20 employees plus four part-timers. “Your Hometown Newspaper” is the slogan of the Rossford Record Journal, and the main focus is the news, which affects our community. In 1969, Robert and Dorothy Welch acquired the Rossford Record Journal and the Perrysburg Messenger Journal. Mr. Welch served as editor of the Rossford Record and came out with his first publication on January 8, 1970. The newspaper was located at 229 West Sixth Street, Perrysburg, for many years, until the owners moved it to the former historic Perrysburg Post Office, 117 East Second Street, on events. Also, the Messenger Journal has participated in fund-raising events for the American Red Cross, Perrysburg Christians United, Perrysburg School District along with numerous local fundraisers. In partnership with the Town Center at Levis Commons, the Messenger has sponsored an ice sculpture demonstration, Easter coloring contest, a Halloween evening, Santa’s Christmas House and Splash Bash. The newspaper was renamed the Rossford Record Journal in 1978 to reflect its sister Journal publications, the Perrysburg Messenger Journal and Point and Shoreland Journal. People crave detailed information about civic and township affairs, school issues and community events. Recently, Rowland Thompson, executive director for Allied Daily Newspapers, wrote an interesting account of his trip back to his hometown, population 1,482, and the changes that had occurred since its weekly newspaper, once owned by his family, closed up shop. Stores closed their doors because they had to pay the high-ticket advertising rates of the big dailies. There were so many obituaries in the daily, the small town funeral home obituaries were lost in the shuffle. Attendance at local sporting events was down. Fund-raisers and volunteer activities cried for support. School bond levies didn’t pass because the school district had no way to get the word out. Mr. Thompson states, “One of the fingers in the dike protecting the life of small communities is the newspaper.
