The Movement Lab Studios opened its <strong>Perrysburg</strong> doors in<br />

June 2008. Located in St. Julian’s Fitness Center on the third<br />

floor of the Orleans Building, the Movement Lab offers private<br />

and semiprivate classical Pilates classes.<br />

Owner Colleene Swolsky, a certified Pilates practitioner,<br />

has been teaching Pilates for more than 19 years.<br />

Ms. Swolsky had struggled with lower back pain herself<br />

and also struggled with helping her therapy and strength training<br />

patients and clients with back pain.<br />

“I had been reading a lot about Pilates and found a studio<br />

in Chicago where I lived at the time,” said Ms. Swolsky. “I<br />

went for a session, and it was one hour of misery. I had an instructor<br />

from Poland, and I didn’t like the method and thought<br />

it was over simplified. But, I walked out of the session without<br />

any back pain. And two weeks later, I still had no back<br />

pain. I was convinced and wanted to learn more.”<br />

Pilates, named after its founder Joseph Pilates, is a system<br />

of exercises focusing on core strength to facilitate a full body<br />

honoring God in all we do.<br />

We have six licensed agents in <strong>Perrysburg</strong><br />

and have recently expanded our Florida office<br />

to six agents.<br />

workout. Instead of performing many repetitions of each exercise,<br />

Pilates incorporates fewer, more precise movements requiring<br />

control and form.<br />

Benefits include longer, leaner muscles; increased core<br />

strength and stability; improved posture, coordination, strength<br />

and flexibility, and heightened body awareness.<br />

“Joseph Pilates was a genius,” said the Pilates practitioner.<br />

“I have been learning and teaching ever since that one day in<br />

1991.”<br />

Recently, Ms. Swolsky was one of four selected throughout<br />

the country to attend “Passing the Torch Exclusive Pilates<br />

Mentorship” program with Mary Bowen. The program is designed<br />

for experienced Pilates teachers who long for a deepening<br />

of their work through in-depth study with a master<br />

teacher. The mentorship is a 12 to 18 month cohort program.<br />

Ms. Bowen, an original student of Joseph Pilates, introduced<br />

Pilates Plus Psyche to the Pilates community more than<br />

10 years ago, a combination evolving over 35 years of teach-<br />

ing Pilates and 40 years of practicing as a Jungian psychoanalyst.<br />

Ms. Bowen, who is 81 years old, continues to travel nationally<br />

and internationally giving workshops and conferences.<br />

Ms. Swolsky began her mentorship program this spring<br />

with Ms. Bowen. Over the next 12 months, the Movement Lab<br />

Studios owner will travel to North Hampton, Massachusetts,<br />

for four weekends of training.<br />

The program focus is lifelong Pilates with three objectives–<br />

Pilates Plus Psyche, Creativity in the Approach to Pilates, and<br />

Exploring New Emphasis in the Pilates Repertoire.<br />

“Mary is just amazing,” added Ms. Swolsky. “I have already<br />

learned so much–knowing how, where and why we experience<br />

our strengths and our weaknesses. Knowing our own<br />

and our client’s type of personality gives me a blueprint for<br />

how best to structure lessons and our whole teacher/client relationship.”<br />
