Great Lakes Wellness Clinic introduces the HCG
physician-based weight control program.
“With more than 136 million overweight and
obese Americans, about 66 percent of the adult population,
choosing the right weight loss plan is critical.”
states Ann Prueter, co-owner of the company.
“The HCG Diet Program is offered through Great
Lakes Wellness Clinics. Its comprehensive, evidence-based
approach will help most clients lose
from 20-30 pounds (and inches) every four to six
weeks without strenuous exercise or hunger pains. It
is based on the Dr. Simeons protocol which has been
around since the 1950s. Great Lakes will guide and
family, from 12 months of age and up. The
healthcare professionals at Great Lakes Urgent
Care can prescribe medication and provide
referrals to primary care physicians,
specialists, and hospitals when needed.
In addition to accepting a variety of insurances,
Urgent Care has a unique Prompt
Pay Pricing system under which visits for
most common illnesses, minor injuries and
wellness care cost a flat rate of $69.
“Great Lakes Urgent Care was created to
increase accessibility to quality healthcare,”
said Kyle Prueter, Executive Director. “We
notice more and more patients calling about
pricing, and often we hear that, even with
our competitive rate, patients are foregoing
teach clients new eating habits that ensure continued
success for a lifetime.”
During The HCG treatment program, clients are
taught everything they need to know for better
health, lifestyle, and reaching the goals defined in
the initial Presentation/Consultation. This includes
an explanation of the diet, regular support during the
program, and all that is needed to complete the program.
Great Lakes Wellness Clinics is a subsidiary of
treatment due to expense. While we hate to
undervalue our services, more has to be
done to help the uninsured and underinsured.”
Prompt Pay Pricing is not only for the
uninsured. Great Lakes understands the
frustrations and feelings of people who wait
to be seen for their urgent problems, and
then have to pay a high price in both time
and money.
“We believed a new model was needed
to make medical care more accessible, affordable
and friendly for busy individuals
who juggle jobs and families each day,” Mr.
Prueter said. “Urgent Care provides a welcome
solution for time-strapped households
who seek convenience and affordability in
healthcare delivery, and need a complement
to family physicians when doctor’s offices
are not open or available.”
Prompt Pay Pricing is available when
payment is made in full at the time of service
with no insurance or Medicare billing.
Great Lakes Urgent Care is open Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and
Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No
appointments are necessary.
Urgent Care is owned and operated by
Kyle and Ann Prueter, and is part of the
The staff at Pinnacle Eye Group includes, left to right, Beth Kekes,
Rachel Saylor, Renee Foels, Lindsay Crompton, Michelle Crites,
Dr. Michael Zysik, Dr. Julie Zysik, Adam Homer, and licensed opticians,
Jim Morrissey and Jennifer McLaughlin.
In its 13th year, Pinnacle Eye Group continues
to offer superior care and service to all their
patients. Husband and wife team, Dr. Michael
Zysik and Dr. Julie Zysik purchased the practice
in 1999 and have continued to build the eye care
practice over the past years.
Starting with just a few patients and only one
examination room 13 years ago, the doctors expanded
and moved to their current facility in
2005, which they designed and built. Located at
850 Commerce Drive, 3,000-square-foot eye
care center offers four examination rooms with
state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. This allows
the doctors to diagnose, manage and treat
all types of eye diseases and conditions including
diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and
glaucoma.
Pinnacle Eye Group also offers free consultation
for LASIK eye surgery–the popular procedure
that frees most people from eyeglasses or
contact lenses. By screening patients, the doctors
are able to determine if a patient is a candidate
for the procedure. They also review the risks and
benefits, and then co-manage the case through
their affiliation with LASIK eye surgeons in the
area.
One of the biggest changes over the last few
years in the eye care profession has been the introduction
of highly individualized eyeglass prescriptions
that offer greater accuracy and better
vision than ever before, said the doctors.
Lenses that offer true high resolution, or “high
definition vision,” correct what are known as
high order aberrations or distortions. Everyone’s
eyes naturally create to lesser or greater degrees
distortions which traditional glasses have no way
of correcting, explained Dr. Mike Zysik.
“For some people, these distortions can make
a person feel as though they have never really
seen clearly with glasses, or have great difficulty
driving at night due to glare or halos around
lights,” he said. “Most people who have these
types of problems with vision are not aware that
it is exactly these distortions within their own
eyes creating their visual complaints.”
With the new technology, these common
problems can be diagnosed and corrected with
amazing results. Patients surveyed after wearing
to see this clearly. I love these iZon lenses.”
iZon is the brand name of the lens and only
available to patients who receive an analysis of
their eyes with an iZon aberrometer, which Pinnacle
Eye Group is the only provider of the technology
in the community.
The two doctors attribute their success to the
the community by supporting numerous local
High School senior who is pursuing a
degree in the health sciences.
The doctors also donate professional services
The decision to give your child dance classes
is not nearly as difficult as deciding where to
have them study. Perrysburg Academy nurtures
the individual potential of their students, creates
performance opportunities and exposes children
to a variety of dance forms. At Perrysburg Academy,
dancers are encouraged to achieve their
personal best; an average child does very well
and the exceptional child flourishes with the excellent
training they receive.
Since 1980 Perrysburg Academy of the Performing
Arts has been a creative, nurturing and
positive environment in the arts community.
Qualified and experienced dance teachers offer
Perrysburg Academy is under the direction of
Vicki Hartkopf, who has been featured in Dance
Teacher Magazine. In 1997, 1999, and 2007, she
served as the American judge at the Australian
National Dance Finals. Other staff members include
Amelia Burkey, Jenny Akenberger, Emilia
Hartkopf, Cathie Dixon, Irish Dance Instructor
Ms. Radabaugh is also the director of
student looking for additional performance opportunities.
Perrysburg Academy provides high quality
dance classes to children in a non-competitive
environment and wonderful performing opportunities.
Classes include ballet, tap, jazz, musical
theater, voice, lyrical jazz, modern, baton, acrobatics,
competitive gymnastics, Irish step dance,
Hawaiian, hip hop, and preschool combination
classes. We also offer dance workshops where
the students get the chance to learn from and
work one-on-one with professionals who have
performed in shows such as Legally Blonde:
The Musical, Les Miz, Beauty and the Beast,
Wicked, and A Chorus Line. Perrysburg Academy
students have attended The Tony Awards
and “Rockette for a Day” at Radio City Music
Hall, and have performed in Spain, Jamaica,
Downtown Disney, and aboard a Caribbean
Very few children will go on to become professional
dancers, but many children, with excellent
instruction, can go on to achieve
wonderful results and extract a great deal of
pleasure from dance classes. It promotes a
healthy body, cooperation, and as they master
each milestone they learn leadership skills and
gain a great deal of self-confidence and self-esteem.
A Day in the Life of Way: Honoring Perrysburg’s
Way Public Library
In February 2012 the Perrysburg Messenger Journal ran a two part series written by local author and library patron Mindy Rice Withrow.
The article reflects her experience during her “behind the scenes” tour of Way Library. Below is an excerpt from this publication. Pictures
courtesy of Lindsay Rozelle. The article in it’s entirety can be found on the Way Library Web site at www.waylibrary.info.
It’s 1881, Clara Barton is organizing the American Red Cross, Booker T. Washington is founding the Tuskegee Institute, President
James A. Garfield is assassinated, vaulting Chester A. Arthur into office. A gunfight breaks out near the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona,
fatally wounding Doc Holliday. And in the village of Perrysburg, Ohio, an attorney named Willard V. Way grants $15,000 to open a lending
library, to be housed in the home of Miss Harriet Hulburd at 118 Louisiana.
Thirteen decades later, the whole world recognizes the American Red Cross, Tombstone is a pizza, and the nation is led by our first
African American president. The Way Library has grown into a thriving cultural center with circulating collections, film showings and art
exhibits, a repository of local history, a technological training center, and a community meeting place for groups of all kinds. That small
collection in Miss Hulburd’s parlor has been moved, first to a sandstone building at the corner of Louisiana and Indiana in 1892, and then
again in 1959 to a new facility at the same location designed by local architects Harold H. and Harold C. Munger. That building was
expanded in 1981, and then again in 2001. Now the collection includes audiobooks, ebooks, and DVDs, and patrons can access their
accounts via the internet. Times have changed.
During the past 31 years, McGivern Jewelers
has expanded from a gold and silver wholesale
business to a full-service jewelry store and one of
the world’s largest Internet diamond sellers (however,
it still provides area residents the opportunity
to sell unwanted, used gold, silver and platinum
items).
Founded in 1980 by Michael and Joseph Mc-
Givern, Perrysburg has been home to McGivern
Jewelers since its inception. The business began in
a small office and in 1985, expanded to a store-front
location in Perry’s Landing. In 1997, the store once
again expanded to the second floor of the same location.
In 2002, needing additional space, the Mc-
Giverns purchased the building at 112 West Second
Street, where the business is currently located.
Even though the company has gone global, Mc-
Givern Jewelers is very proud of the great services
it continues to offer the local community.
years, the McGiverns have offered that service and
according to Michael McGivern, now is a great
time to sell. “Precious metal prices currently are at
all-time highs,” he said.
The company also will buy old U.S. coins that
have more value than just silver content, as well as
better dates, rare coins, coins that have not been circulated
and proof coins.
Furthermore, McGivern jewelry retailers specialize
complete line of diamond and gemstone jewelry in
14K gold, 18K platinum and palladium.
The full-service jewelry store has one of the
largest selections of GIA certified diamonds, a large
selection of rings and all other jewelry, and provides
complete jewelry repair service and custom
such a large selection of lose diamonds and rings
said. “All our work is done on-site by our full-time
goldsmith who has more than 20 years of experience.
And our jewelry repair turnaround time is
very quick.”
A supporter of the community, the store donates
“I feel that by calling myself a dog trainer, I have an obligation
to every student to be the best that I can be. To become
a skilled professional dog trainer, one should have a
level of interest, education, experience and dedication to the
“My education does not stop with training dogs and owners.
Continuing my education on dog behavior, training and
teaching skills also is top priority. Besides working with dogs
and their owners, I will continue to be very familiar with the
latest research and knowledge in the field of dog behavior.”
Toledo Dog Training’s goal is to continue to bring quality
dog training to the Toledo metro area and offer new and exciting
Joe Lawless, in response to
his own experiences of
business travel and extended
stays in cramped hotel rooms.
Phillip Bollin, Certified Financial Planner
Bollin Wealth Management is a fee-only, independent
Registered Investment Advisory and
financial planning firm, formed in 2004 by Perrysburg
resident Phillip E. Bollin, Certified Financial
Planner. The advisory firm was
formed to provide individual and small business
clients with an alternative to the traditional brokerage
firm and its inherent conflicts of interest
that put investors at a disadvantage, said the
president.
A native of Toledo, Phil pursued a degree in
electrical engineering after graduating from St.
John’s Jesuit high school. After graduating with
his electrical engineering degree from the University
of Detroit, Phil pursued a consulting career
in the field of information technology,
working for Electronic Data Systems, Ernst &
Young and PriceWaterhouse Coopers. After
graduating with his Master of Business Administration
from the University of Michigan in
2000, Phil returned to Northwest Ohio, providing
strategic consulting services to dozens of
clients in the financial services industry around
the globe.
It was during this time period that Phil
gained key insight into how the investment industry’s
business practices favored Wall Street
and put investors at a distinct disadvantage.
“We would meet with the executive leaders of
various private banks and brokerage firms, and
they would talk about their unique investment
offerings and economic forecasting models,”
said Mr. Bollin. “In reality, they were offering
the same exact products and services as their
competition. They were just calling them different
names. And the sole focus of these investment
products and service offerings was to
capture additional wallet-share from their
clients.” “That’s when I realized Wall Street’s
business model was not in alignment with investor’s
best interests,” added Mr. Bollin.
In stark contrast to Wall Street’s model,
Bollin Wealth Management provides completely
independent advice to its clientele. The fee-only
compensation approach means Bollin Wealth
Management’s clients are getting financial advice
that is truly in their best interest, because
the fee is the same no matter which investment
While everything else may be changing at a
record pace, one thing that will always remain
the same is the desire to have comfortable accommodations
when away from home for business
or recreation.
Corporate Housing Systems has been meeting
and exceeding this need for more than 25
years. CHS “guests” can really stretch out and
live in their fully furnished and equipped apartment
homes.
Corporate Housing Systems, Inc. was established
by owner Joe Lawless, in response to his
own experiences of business travel and extended
stays in cramped hotel rooms. He recalls tiny
closets and limited drawer space. This is not the
case in these luxury apartments. Some of the
closets are so large, guests have actually put cribs
in them. The company, which originated in
solutions are recommended. “Commission
compensated brokers and insurance agents have
an unavoidable conflict of interest to recommend
high commission products like variable
annuities and mutual funds sold with a sales
load,” stated the Certified Financial Planner.
Bollin Wealth Management was recognized
in 2010 as one of the best financial planning
firms in Northwest Ohio by the Toledo Business
Journal, and Mr. Bollin has been interviewed
and quoted by several publications including the
Perrysburg Messenger Journal and Toledo
Blade.
Mr. Bollin earned the Certified Financial
Planner (CFP®) designation in 2008 – a certification
that approximately one in ten advisors
possess, and is often associated with professionals
at the pinnacle of their profession. “CFPs®
are held to higher standards of ethics and conduct
than non-CFPs®, and I think that is extremely
important to investors in light of the
numerous scandals that have rocked Wall Street
over the last decade,” added Mr. Bollin. “Additionally,
I knew that attaining the knowledge and
expertise required to obtain the CFP® designation
was vital to providing my clients with the
best financial and investment advice possible.”
The advisory firm operates under a fiduciary
standard of care, explained Mr. Bollin. Brokerage
firms, banks and insurance companies operate
under a standard of suitability. “There can
be a wide variation in the quality of advice given
between the two standards.” With a fiduciary
standard of care, advisors must provide advice
that is solely in the client’s best interests. Under
the standard of suitability, recommendations
only have to be deemed “suitable” for a given
client’s situation. “As you might imagine, an
insurance agent recommending an investor put
all her money into a variable annuity might be
deemed a suitable recommendation, even
though it very likely would not be in the client’s
best interests.”
Mr. Bollin’s professional advice and investment
philosophy utilize his background in engineering
and management consulting. “We use
the same step-by-step discovery and analysis
process that engineers use when solving problems.
Only after a thorough analysis and understanding
of every facet of our clients’ financial
situation is obtained, do we make any strategic
recommendations.” Another strategic advantage
for clients of Bollin Wealth Management is
its affiliation with elite management firms. “Our
clients are offered access to no-load, very lowcost,
extremely diversified investment strategies
that have traditionally been reserved for only the
largest of institutional investors. These strategies
are based on tried, tested and proven Nobel
Prize winning investment strategies and economic
principles, not a fund manager’s hunch
or forecasts.
Although no longer a practicing engineer,
Mr. Bollin keeps active in the engineering profession
through his board role with the Technical
Society of Toledo and will serve as the Chairman
for Engineering Week recognition events
in February of 2013. Engineering clients are a
niche specialty of Bollin Wealth Management.
“Most people in the financial planning and investment
advisory industries do not like to deal
with engineers,” added the CFP®. “They ask
too many technical questions for sales-focused
brokers and insurance agents. With my engineering
background, I understand the engineering
mind and their need to delve into the inner
workings of solutions.”
Mr. Bollin is very involved in the community
and dedicated to the advancement of financial
planning in Northwest Ohio. He has served as
chairman of both the school advisory and parish
financial council at St. Rose Catholic Church,
and is a board member with the Northwest Ohio
chapter of the Financial Planning Association.
Mr. Bollin frequently donates his time and expertise
to service members of the 180th Fighter
Wing Air National Guard unit to deliver financial
literacy programs or provide one-on-one
consultations. Mr. Bollin is also very involved
in youth sports in Perrysburg and St. Rose,
coaching softball, volleyball and basketball.
The philosophy of Bollin Wealth Management
is that there are vastly superior strategies
for investors and retirees to build, preserve and
transfer wealth than what Wall Street’s brokerage
firms and insurance companies offer. The
marriage of engineering principles and methodology
with superior investing strategies is why
Everyone enjoys a birthday celebration, and
this summer the children and staff at Children’s
Discovery Center joined together to celebrate
CDC’s 30th anniversary of serving families in the
greater Toledo area. Whether it was singing favorite
songs, playing games, or making special art
projects, the CDC anniversary celebration on June
14, 2012, was a special one for everyone involved.
More than just child care for working
parents, Children’s Discovery Center offers peace
of mind that each child’s unique interests and abilities
are nurtured and developed. Community involvement
as well as hands-on exploration for
children are hallmarks of this exceptional program
for young children.
At the heart of this outstanding learning environment
is a curriculum inspired by the world-acclaimed
Reggio Emilia approach to learning.
Each child is encouraged to see, touch, and do to
express his or her “100 languages of learning” in
a warm, welcoming and secure setting. The role
of the environment is essential to the Reggio ap-
proach which emphasizes aesthetically beautiful
surroundings with great attention to detail. In
2010, a book was published by Gryphon House
entitled “Inspiring Spaces for Young Children”
highlighting the beautiful learning environments
of Children’s Discovery Center. Several members
of the CDC management team were authors of
this book and have since done numerous trainings
and consultations throughout the country and
overseas on this topic.
Children’s Discovery Center on Avenue Road
has been part of the Perrysburg community since
1993 and was recently renovated to reflect the design
principles developed by the authors of “Inspiring
Spaces for Young Children.” In 2007, the
CDC facility at Lighthouse Way on Route 25 near
Levis Commons was opened utilizing ideas such
as intentional use of color, lighting and materials
as well as many items from nature. Here children
can truly experience the beauty of learning
through their many senses. Come and see how
beautiful spaces can truly become learning places.
PROGRESS IN PERRYSBURG–JULY 2012 Page 25
As April 29, 1813 dawned, the soldiers at Fort Meigs had been surrounded for two days by British forces and their Native American allies. The War of
1812 was going poorly for the Americans, and now the British had besieged Fort Meigs. This was a defining moment in the history of our state and our
nation. Little did these men then know that the battle of Fort Meigs would help turn the tide of war in favor of American forces and usher in a series of American
victories that would secure the Ohio frontier. These men only knew that the enemy was at the gate and a heavy fight was sure to ensue. General William
Henry Harrison wrote in his General Orders that day that, “It is at length reduced to certainty that the enemy are about to carry into effect their threatened
attack on this post” and urged his men, “To your posts then fellow soldiers and remember the eyes of the country are upon you!”
The eyes of the country will soon be upon Fort Meigs as we join other historic sites and communities across the United States and Canada that are
planning to observe the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and to honor the 200 years of peace between Canada, Great Britain and the U.S. Many programs
are planned for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.
First Siege 1813:
200th Anniversary Event
May 3rd-5th , 2013
The First Siege of Fort Meigs was a nine-day
conflict fought between May 1 st -9 th , 1813. The siege consisted
of a massive five-day artillery bombardment by the
combined British and Canadian forces. Native
Americans, allied to the British, also helped surround and
cut off Fort Meigs during the siege. May 5th marked the
bloodiest day of fighting with infantry soldiers engaged in
fierce combat on both sides of the Maumee River. In the
end, the Americans held the fort and this tactical victory
marked a turning point in the Western Theater of War.
This triumph ushered in a series of American victories
and allowed the U.S. time to build the fleet which would
later defeat the British on Lake Erie.
We will commemorate this important event with a wide
number of activities.
• A Student Education Day featuring interactive programs
with historical interpreters representing U.S. and British soldiers,
civilians and Native Americans
• A night-time artillery duel across the Maumee River
• Recreations of some of the fighting that took place 200
years ago
• Historic living history encampments, with re-enactors
from across the U.S. and Canada
community’s vitality and economic health.
People crave detailed information about civic
and township affairs, school issues and community
events. Recently, Rowland Thompson,
executive director for Allied Daily Newspapers,
wrote an interesting account of his trip
back to his hometown, population 1,482, and
the changes that had occurred since its weekly
newspaper, once owned by his family, closed
up shop.
Stores closed their doors because they had
to pay the high-ticket advertising rates of the
big dailies. There were so many obituaries in
the daily, the small town funeral home obituaries
were lost in the shuffle. Attendance at
local sporting events was down. Fund-raisers
and volunteer activities cried for support.
School bond levies didn’t pass because the
school district had no way to get the word out.
Mr. Thompson states, “One of the fingers
in the dike protecting the life of small communities
is the newspaper. The paper connects
people to each other and their community.”
Grace Church is known as a family-friendly church.
One of the main things people note when talking about
what brought them to Grace is the strong ministry with
children and youth. From pre-school through high
school, children and students find caring leaders and
engaging activities to help them experience the reality
of God’s love and presence in many ways. In addition
to the church’s schedule of group events, classes and
small groups throughout the year, Grace also sponsors
one of the largest and most active scouting programs in
the area. And there is always a waiting list for parents
who wish to enroll their children in the Grace Preschool.
Grace has a very capable team of trained and
experienced staff to lead all this ministry with children
and teens.
Missions is another area of emphasis in Grace’s
ministry. Every person at Grace is invited and encouraged
to do mission and service ‘hands on.’ The church
has active partnerships and involvement in mission
ministries both locally and around the world, including:
•Perrysburg Christians United–Grace is pleased to
join with eight other churches in this service to people
of our community, and to be the host site for this food
pantry’s warehouse and distribution center;
•Providing volunteers and support to Cherry Street
Mission Ministries, Toledo Gospel Mission, and
Friendly Center in Toledo;
•The founders of Missions International of America
The mission of the Wood County Health
Department is to take the initiative to assure
that conditions in Wood County permit residents
to lead healthy lives.
The mission is accomplished by:
•Coordinatingcommunity assessment efforts
to define health issues to prevent disease,
promote health, and protect residents from
health risks;
•Developinglocal health policies which
support and encourage better health;
•Encouraging and assisting citizens to understand
personal and community health risks
and accept responsibility to adopt practices that
enhance individual and collective health, and
•Assuringthat appropriate services are accessible
to all residents and delivered in an effective
and efficient manner.
Residents of Wood County are impacted by
the health department’s many efforts to protect
individuals, families and the environment.
“If you’ve eaten in a restaurant in Wood
County, we’ve been there to protect your food–
from fine diningto fast food. If you own a
house, we’ve been there to assure your sewage
is properly contained and your water is potable.
If you have struggled with finances and are
worried about the health of your child, we’ve
been there to supply immunizations, check-ups,
and in some cases food through our WIC pro-
call Grace Church home. Their ministries in Haiti include
the Brad Reddick School where more than 300
children are taught and fed each school day. Mission
teams travel there three times a year providing medical
clinics and work in water projects and agriculture;
•Grace also actively supports Deborah House, a
ministry to abandoned, orphaned and abused young
women in Romania.
With the addition of a multi-purpose Family Life
Center, a variety of additional activities are now possible.
Whether using it as a gym for basketball or volleyball,
as a concert hall for musical presentations, or as a
site for speakers or conferences, the Family Life Center
serves as a place for the church family and groups from
the community to come for recreation, enrichment and
inspiration. The Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra has
presented their Christmas Holiday concert here the past
two seasons. Concert performers have presented here,
ranging from national artists like Bethany Dillon to
local talent such as Kate Jordan and Soul Venture.
Grace also has hosted speakers, most recently Todd
Gongwer, author of “Lead… for God’ Sake”.
Still, the way most people share in the life and vitality
of Grace Church is through the worship services
each Sunday morning. Grace offers both traditionalstyle
worship and a contemporary worship setting.
as if they were our own family. Our goal is to
The health department’s purpose is to maintain
and protect the health of residents through
control of communicable disease, management
of the environment, education of the community
in health promotion, prevention of illness
and chronic disease, and providinghealth care
services in the home and other settings in the
community, she explained.
“We are and will continue to implement
programs that focus on prevention, identification
and detection of early signs of disease, referral,
health care continuity, interagency
collaboration and rehabilitation services,” she
added.
These are just a few of the ways that the
health department works to ensure safety of
Wood County residents. Since 1920, the health
department has been providingessential services
to the community and has served as a
model of innovation and effectiveness for other
public health organizations across the country.
“During the past 90 years, many things have
changed, but the core concept remains: protectingyou
and your environment,” Ms. Butler
said.
Never before has public health been held so
accountable to educate, inform and protect citizens
on issues that directly impact their health
and well-being. As the world evolves, we will
continue to work with other public health agen-
include both personal care, such as dressing,
bathing, feeding, or transferring, and companion
care, such as light housekeeping, meal
preparation, shopping, errand running, or social
outings. We also enjoy praying and/or
reading the Bible as requested. At Christian
Home Care we also recognize and respect that
not everyone will be interested in spiritual encouragement.
If someone does not wish to discuss
anything spiritual, we respect those
wishes.
As manager of the office, Susan Wendt is
active in every aspect of the business from hiring
caregivers to new client start up, public relations
and even some caregiving when
needed. Melissa Swartz, RN, supervises the
caregivers, does client assessments and medication
After forming a new law practice in early 2010, the
Rossford law firm of Heban, Sommer & Murphree,
LLC now is in its third year of existence. The law firm
is located in one of the city’s oldest buildings, the historic
1917 Rossford Savings Bank at 200 Dixie Highway.
The Firm’s three partners are Kevin Heban, Gary
Sommer and Kent Murphree. They are joined by attorneys
Melissa Purpura, John Lewandowski and Gerald
Galernik, paralegal Melissa Furrie and legal assistants
Sandra Wagener and Sally Pietrasz.
The firm was established when Messrs. Heban, Sommer
and Murphree decided to combine their existing
law practices.
“We found that we complement each other’s experiences
and practice areas,” Mr. Heban said.
While Mr. Heban concentrates on estate work, real
estate, litigation and municipal law, his partners focus
on business, labor, corporate law and negotiations.
“The practices just seemed to mesh together so we
can be a full-service firm,” Mr. Murphree said.
The firm provides law director and prosecutor services
to the City of Rossford, along with the villages of
Waterville, Whitehouse and Bloomdale, Mr. Heban said.
Mr. Sommer, a Sylvania resident, said he is pleased
to be part of a firm committed to local interests and
helping Rossford residents.
Mr. Heban is a graduate of the University of Toledo
SeaGate Convention Center, Erie Street Market, and area hotels
The CVB manages the popular Perrysburg Farmers Market
which is in its 14th season of operation in downtown Perrysburg.
The market is open every Thursday from 3 to 8 pm.
within its boundaries. The CVB is governed by a nine member
Board of Trustees and consists of three Trustees representing
business; and three Trustees representing the local
Mr. Sommer is a Miami University graduate and
Before opening their practice, the partners renovated
the firm’s building, which is located next to the Edward
Ford Memorial.
“We wanted to be faithful to what it would have
looked like in its early days—we tried to stay time period
appropriate,” Mr. Sommer explained.
The architecture, colors and furniture in the “tremendously
attractive building” are reminiscent of the 1930s
and 1940s. Interior woodwork, transom windows and
slate floors in the offices on the first and second floors
contribute to the professional atmosphere.
The attorneys said they are pleased with their offices—and
with the opportunity to conduct their practice
in Rossford.
“We hope to continue to offer outstanding legal representation
to clients and to be a good business partner
in the community,” Mr. Heban said.

PROGRESS IN PERRYSBURG–JULY 2012 Page 35
Witzler-Shank Funeral Home has been
serving Perrysburg and the surrounding communities
for more than 153 years. The rich history
of the business began in 1859, when Peter
Witzler moved his new bride, Margaret, to Perrysburg.
There, he formed awood-working
shop on the hydraulic canal, at the foot of Mulberry
Street, where he bought power from the
town to run his lathe and other machinery. An
advertisement was discovered in the Perrysburg
Journal for furniture and chairs, as well
as coffins–“a narrow house for the dead”– and
a hearse at reasonable charges. This began the
Witzler family’s commitment to funeral service.
Twenty-three years later, in 1892, Peter and
Margaret’s son Charles founded a furniture
and undertaking business at 116 Louisiana Av-
The Witzler Shank Funeral Home is spacious and handicap accessible, and features a lovelychapel and visitation/viewing rooms.
It also accommodates memorial gatherings and receptions.
enue. When Charles died shortly after opening
the business, his brother Alfred (A.J.) took it
over and continued at that location for nearly
40 years. In 1930, A.J. purchased the Hoover
house at 128 East Front Street, which was built
in 1875, and converted it into a funeral home
for the community. Norm and Marcena Witzler
and their son, Earl, began to operate the funeral
home as a separate and independent business.
A.J. died in 1934, having never
conducted a funeral at the new location. In
1947, the Witzlers and their six children
moved down to 240 East Front Street. Norm
continued to run the business until his death
on April 16, 1964.
With the financial help of Mrs. Witzler and
Earl, Clara and Bob Shank bought the business
Alvin G. Buderer, RPh, joined the practice.
More than 40 years later, his son Jim Buderer,
RPh, took over the reins and began dispensing
customized medications from the newly located
building on Hancock Street.
Today, Jim Buderer, RPh and son Matt Buderer,
RPh, FIACP, and their chief pharmacists
oversee the three compounding pharmacies, located
in Sandusky, Perrysburg and Avon, Ohio.
Mr. Mack, president of the board, acknowledged that the past few years
of a new miniature house to teach children about fire safety from
township firm Cousino Harris Disaster Kleanup. Fire Chief Tom Brice also
acquired two new medical devices to better treat victims of cardiac arrest.
The first device, a portable automatic CPR machine, administers precise
compressions to a patient’s chest at the press of a button. “ A second device,
the laryngoscope, allows EMTto visually see the air passage and open it
up to administer oxygen,” explained the chief.
Perrysburg Township’s Police Department also has had a busy year. The
department held its first ever Citizens Police Academy this past spring.
More than a dozen residents participated in the five-week session, learning
about various aspects of the criminal justice system and witnessing a
demonstration of a K9 unit during a lesson on criminal interdiction. Participants
also received firearms and taser training. The department welcomed
a new member to its ranks, K9 “X.” The dog and handler Officer
Jason Gladney began working together in early June. X is a dual purpose
dog, capable of picking up the scent of a suspect/missing person and locating
drugs. He also can assist in the arrest of a fleeing suspect. Earlier this
year, the police department joined with area law enforcement agencies to
create a SWAT unit. The special response team members retrofitted an
EMS ambulance and members completed training. Police Chief Mark Hetrick
said the unit is “ready to roll” when called upon in an emergency.
In the zoning department, Inspector/Administrator Grant Garn noted
that permits are on the rise. New businesses also are locating on U.S. Route
20 in the township including Tim Horton’s/Chipotle at the former Sunoco
station near I-75 and Chick-Fil-A in front of Kohl’s department store. A
Dollar Tree store also opened near Office Max. Other new businesses include
OK Patron on Helen Drive and Universal Granite and Marble on
Holiday Lane. Residential growth is on the increase with 11 new single
family dwelling permits in the first five months of 2012–up from eight in
2011.
The maintenance department under the supervision of Kraig Gottfried
acquired a new mower recently, and the department continues to do an excellent
job of maintaining township infrastructure, buildings and the equipment
fleet, which includes police vehicles.
Mr. Gottfried also works closely with Recreation Director Bob Warnimont
to maintain the township’s parks and recreational facilities, such as
the ice rink and baseball field at Fire Station No. 2. In May, the township
held its annual Recycle Roundup in conjunction with the City of Perrysburg.
As always, the event was a huge success. During the three-hour period,
an estimated 500 pounds of household hazardous waste was collected
as well as eight gaylords of paper and a semi-trailer and box truck filled
with electronics and small appliances.
Office personnel also have had a busy year. A redesigned Web site provides
information on township services including recycling, food pantry,
Operation Breadbasket, community events and more. Those unable to attend
trustees’ meetings, but interested in learning more about township
government, may listen to the meetings by going to the resources category
and clicking on “meeting audio.” For anyone moving into the township, the
office offers a new resident guide that provides useful information on the
township and its resources.
To learn more about Perrysburg Township, visit the Web site at
www.perrysburgtownship.us or stop by the office, which is open Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Administrator John Hrosko, Assistant
to the Administrator Rosanna Violi or Becky Johnson, payroll and financial
specialist, are there to help you.
