anytime upon reasonable request.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Second and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the
parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first
Monday of each month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities
of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter
Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation.
THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements
should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding
to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning
(NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact
the parish office to begin the process.
PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK
If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged
or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call
the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion
and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00
AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April
and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen
Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be
sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member
of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night
for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on
Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged
to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet
prayer with the Lord.
WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes
you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so
that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You can register
at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of
any change of address.
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic
worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming
love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful
for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish
community and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
Iam officially a civilian now, with my retirement from the
United States Air Force Reserve on 1 April after a
memorable 40-year career. When asked if I wanted to have
an event, I declined. But wiser voices prevailed, and it was
a very good decision. Last Sunday at 1530 hours, some 150
fellow airmen, parishioners from each of the four churches at
which I served, including 35 from St. Greg’s, and personal
friends gathered at the base auditorium for a very simple yet
dignified ceremony. I was sorry that my sister, Kathy and her
husband weren’t able to attend. She is recovering from a knee
replacement and has to stay close to home for a little while
more. I was given an oak leaf cluster for my Meritorious
Service Medal and people said nice things about me. It was a
proud moment for me and I was glad to share it with so many
close friends.
How did all this begin for me? Well, back on
December 1,1969, the Selective Service System conducted its
first draft lottery to determine the order of call to military
service in the Vietnam War for men born between 1944 and
1950. The days of the year were represented by the numbers
from 1 to 366 written on slips of paper placed in separate
plastic capsules and dumped in a deep glass jar. The capsules
were draw from the jar one at a time. The first day number
drawn was 257 (September 14). My number (July 25) was 67.
That was pretty low and the chances were high that I would
have been drafted into the army. So, I joined the Air National
Guard in Westchester. At every step along the way, when I
thought I would be discharged, there was another good
reason to stay. Next I knew, 40 years had gone by, and here
we are. I loved my time in the military. It was a chance to
serve the men and women of our country in a productive way.
But, I must admit, I will be happy each month to use the time
normally given to the air force and spend it with you here at
SGB. Thank you to everybody who expressed well wishes. I
was so honored to wear the uniform, even though the seams
were stretching a little. It was a pleasure to serve in this way.
On the same day of my retirement, young
parishioners were honored at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the
annual scouting Emblem Sunday. St. Greg’s was well
represented. Ad Altare Dei Emblems were awarded to Philip
Cipollina, Brian Ireland, Matthew Nebel, James Roff. Marian
Medals were given to Megan Cawley,Jacqueline Cerrati, Victoria
Cipollina and Tonianne Zottoli. Emily Roff received the Pope
Pius XII Emblem; and our permanent deacon, Ron Dowen took
home the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award. We are so proud of all
of you for the distinction that you have brought to our parish.
Congratulations. If I had not been occupied myself, I would
have been there with you last Sunday.
GOD’S AMAZING LOVE STORY: GALS Come meet your pals, we call ourselves GALS. We’ll give you some knowledge and lend you
a hand, to explore with each other God’s amazing plan. A unique program for mothers and daughters ages 12-15. Today’s popular
culture can make it difficult for young women to make healthy decisions. Our program explores our femininity in the context of God’s
love and His plan for women and includes an overview of the physical changes in a young woman’s body as it prepares for eventual
motherhood; an explanation of the female reproductive system; the sacredness of human life; the virtues of modesty and chastity and
the challenge to live these virtues in today’s society. We hope to provide a comprehensive presentation on living God’s truth and the
reality that women lead by example through their words, choices and actions. The GALS program aims to provide a comfortable
atmosphere for presenting these important topics and to establish a foundation for continued communication between
mother/guardian and daughter. Our presenters are registered nurses along with mothers and daughters who will emphasize
understanding, respect and appreciation for God’s gifts to women. We hope to help your daughter become a leader among her peers
in making moral and healthy choices with regard to her sexuality. Come on Friday, April 27 th at St. Francis in West Nyack from 6:30
to 9:00 PM. For girls age 12 to 15. Pizza and beverages will be served during intermission. $20.00 per family. For more information,
call Mary Ann Pennell at 354-0557.
