July 31, 2011
THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 PM and
anytime upon reasonable request.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Second and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the
parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first
Monday of each month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities
of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter
Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation.
THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements
should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding
to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning
(NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact
the parish office to begin the process.
PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK
If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged
or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call
the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion
and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00
AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April
and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen
Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be
sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member
of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night
for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on
Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged
to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet
prayer with the Lord.
WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes
you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so
that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You can register
at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of
any change of address.
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic
worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming
love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful
for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish
community and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

CALLED TO THE WATERS OF BAPTISM Last Sunday, MADILYN
CHRISTINE ZIGLER was presented at our baptismal font and became
a child of God and a new member of our parish. We offer a
warm welcome to her and congratulations to her parents and
family.
WERE YOU UP THERE? On June 16, 1961, Father Thomas Darby drove up a dusty, dirt road to take possession of
St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish House. He was the first pastor of our brand new parish. He was welcomed by some
20 or 30 people who were busily preparing for his arrival, cleaning and painting, sweeping the patio and mowing
the lawn, stocking the kitchen and making the bed. If you wee up there in those early days, please call a member
of the Jubilee Nostalgia Committee who want to hear your thoughts: Deacon Gus (354-0489,
pappalardo1@optimum.net); Deacon John (947-2095, jlejskelly@verizon.net); Dan Sullivan (786-2590,
dansuzisullivan@aol.com); Dick Eggers (942-0512, rfeggers@aol.com).
ALTAR FLOWER MEMORIALS Traditionally, altar flowers are donated for the Sunday Masses to remember a loved one or for a special
intention. You may call the parish office (947-1873) to arrange for a memorial basket. The donation is $45. Reservation cards are
also in the narthex.
OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
Did you miss me? What? You didn’t know I was gone?
I sure did miss you and I am happy to be home from a
wonderful twelve-day vacation. My first full day back
was Saturday. I hope to get up to speed in the next day
or two. Since we last saw each other, another year has passed
for me ~ my 61 st year of life. Along with that milestone, I will
complete my tenth month with all of you good people of St.
Gregory Barbarigo today. What a blessing and honor for me
to be your shepherd (Jeremiah 3:15; Ezekiel 34:23). My long
lived priesthood and variety of pastoral experience has led me
to you. I am so happy to be here.
First, let me welcome to our Sunday staff Father Jim
McDermott, the new director at the Marian Shrine, who
replaced Father John and whom some of you met last Sunday.
He comes from Archbishop Shaw High School in New Orleans
where he served as principal for the past nine years. I know
that you will welcome Father Jim as you have welcomed me.
Last week, we turned another corner in the recent
history of our parish with the final court appearance of Father
Tom and his subsequent sentence of five years’ probation. It
is particularly difficult when someone who works for the
church, especially if he is a priest, has gotten into trouble. In
our minds, we know that all people are sinners and many
suffer from addictions. But when that person is our family
member or our pastor, we don’t always know what to feel or
say. Father continues to have our love and support, even if he
has done something wrong. From the very beginning, we
cooperated with the district attorney and the archdiocese and
followed the law. We regret that Father has hurt the parish by
feeding his addiction. But, actions do have consequences. He
was asked to resign as pastor of the parish and for the past 13
months he has lived in a treatment facility to deal with his
difficulty. He had to go through the discovery and admission
of what he had done to the people of St. Gregory. We don’t
change overnight, which is why rehabilitation programs take
months to succeed. This parish has been through a difficult
period. Although financial restitution has been made, we all
need to take the time to heal. You all have a right to your
feelings. Some people will forgive easily, and some will be
angry for a long time. I can assure you that archdiocesan
regulations are now being followed, and that your donations
to this parish, which are gradually increasing and for which we
are most grateful, are being safeguarded. Our task now is to
move forward and build upon the great foundation and
splendid tradition of worship, evangelization, education,
welcome, outreach, charity and works of justice that has been
part of this faith community for half a century. Father Tom's
fall gives all of us a warning that we have to be aware of
temptations and fight our demons, lest they dominate us.
Many fine people that we know are recovering alcoholics or
gamblers. Peace and new life are possible for those who seek
it. As we move forward today and put this tragedy behind us,
may God bless you all.
TEENS CONNECTED BY CHRIST RECYCLING Is the returning of your nickel deposit bottles and cans your least favorite chore each
week? If so, the youth members of TCC will gladly return them for you in an effort to raise funds for their programs. Continuing
throughout the summer, the teens will have a bin located outside of church. Please drop the bottles and cans in there as you come
to Mass. The teens will do the rest. During the first six weeks of this fund raiser, the teens returned 6,771 bottles and cans and
received $338.55 for them. The money will go to support the weekly TCC programs, community service projects, and retreats. Thank
you very much for your support!
MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES Often we are asked by parishioners about ways to remember loved ones who are living
or deceased. Here is a great way in which you might like to keep their memory alive and, at the same time, make
a contribution to your parish church. The vestments that we use for Mass are beginning to show their age. It would
be nice if we could begin to replace them over a period of time. Many of them date back some 30 years. If you
would like more information, please speak with Father. Samples are posted on the parish web page. The donation
is $500 per vestment.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL Many people enjoy having quiet time, personal time, with the God they love. Lots
of good decisions and renewed commitment come from being quiet with Jesus, especially during EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. We invite you
to be present for this time while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on our altar. This may prove to be the most peaceful and rewarding
hour of your month. If there is anyone who wishes to be a guardian and a partner for Eucharistic Adoration, please look at these
vacant hours. If you wish to be a substitute for the summer months during these same hours, we can use your participation as well:
1:00 AM Sunday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Saturday; 2:00 AM Sunday/ Monday/Tuesday/Friday; 3:00 AM Sunday/Monday/Friday/Saturday;
4:00 AM Sunday/Thursday/Saturday; 8:00 AM Sunday; 9:00 AM Wednesday; 12 Noon to 6 PM; 3:00 PM Thursday/ Saturday; 6 PM to
Midnight; 12:00 AM Friday and 10:00 AM Friday; 8 PM Saturday. Interested? Call 914-263-6451.
WORK CREW NEEDED Brian Fagan, our director of maintenance is in need of some assistance as we attempt to seal
and waterproof the windows of the school. We need workers to cut and remove old calking and backerod, repack
with new backerod and calk, clean and the joints. We also need helpers to move ladders, tools, etc. If you have
extension ladders, 10 foot step ladders, utility knives, paint scrapers and calking guns, bring them along. Call (947-
1873) if you can help. When we get a big enough crew together, we will set a date for work. Thank you.
NEW CANDLES Please take a look at the temporary candle stand at the shrine of Mary and Joseph. They are borrowed from the
manufacturer, Shrine Design. These are electronically converted real wax candles, custom made in wood cabinets, with low, five voltage
electronics and maintenance free operation. Candles reach Catholics on a spiritual level and remain a source of inspiration and a
symbol of Christ. They have always been seen as sentinels, keeping watch after you have gone. By lighting a candle, people know
their prayer will continue long after they leave church, their prayer will go on through the day. They are a worthwhile expression of
faith. Along with the replacement vestment that are being sought, some in the parish might like to memorialize these new candle
stands (for the church and the chapel). Speak with Father if you are interested.
CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA and HOME MISSIONS Next Sunday there will be a second collection taken for the Church
in Latin American and the Mission Church in the U.S. In their own way, each faces tremendous obstacles: poverty,
injustice and violence. As they struggle to meet everyday needs, our help enables them to train church leaders there.
There are envelopes in your contribution packet, and additional ones are at the narthex, but there will only be one
collection which will be combined and sent to the chancery office. Please be thoughtful in next Sunday’s special
offerings which can be taken from the second 5% of your tithe. The Debt Reduction Offering will be collected on
August 14 th .
ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On Sundays and other Holy Days of Obligation, Catholics are obliged to participate in
the Mass and to refrain from unnecessary work and all spiritually-distracting activities in conformity with the code of canon law. By
a special 1993 indult from the Holy See, whenever January 1 st , August 15 th , or November 1 st fall on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to
attend Mass is dispensed. Therefore, Monday, August 15 th will be observed as the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
but there is no obligation to attend Mass which will be celebrated at the usual times of 7:30 and 9:00 AM. Give honor to Our Lady
by coming to Mass that day.
QUIET ZONE Reminder: when you enter the Church for Mass~~switch off all cell phones and pagers. Thank you.
EMBER DAY FOR PEACE For centuries, the Church kept three days (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) near the beginning of each
season as a time of special penance. Such ember days echo the meaning and observance of Lent. Local churches and households may
wish to observe these days of fasting, works of charity and prayers. August 6 th and 9 th are the anniversaries of the atomic bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fasting and prayers would be a way to express the sorrow of nuclear war and to ponder the possibility of
making a peaceful world.
FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH on August 5 th . The nine consecutive first Fridays (with prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus) were
requested in personal revelation to our Lord reported by Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque. The five consecutive first Saturdays (with
penance and recitation of five decades of the Rosary) go back to the children of Fatima (1917) promising intercession for final
perseverance to those offering reparation to Christ through the Immaculate Heart. Why not set some time aside this week?
THE ROCKLAND COUNTY VICARIATE PRO-LIFE MASS will be celebrated at the Saint Aedan’s Church, 23 Reld Drive,
Pearl River on Monday, August 1 st at 7:30 pm. The celebrant will be Father Koshy George of St. John the Baptist in
may arise. It takes a special person who understands that making a blood donation is a life saving deed. Many in
our own community need blood transfusions every day. Donating blood is safe, quick and easy to do. With
NO VACATION FROM GOD We would like to remind parents of their obligation to see to it that their children make
use of the sacraments, especially Holy Communion and confession. Teach them the responsibility of taking these
sacraments seriously and to make them a way of living. Parents, we need your assistance in helping children grow
as mature Christian Catholics. Attend church every Sunday as a family no matter where you are. When you are on
vacation, be sure you have packed your church clothes.
HUDSON AFFINITY PROGRAM Since electric usage is higher now, remember that now is an opportune time to join the Hudson Energy
EXODUS MEN’S NIGHT OF PRAYER is held on the first Monday
of every month at 8:00 PM in the church. We believe, as
Catholic men, that the Holy Spirit is calling us into a deeper
experience of prayer. We believe that the same Spirit that
moved the apostles and disciples of our Lord into action is
alive and with us here at St. Gregory Barbarigo and wishes to
see the men of this parish open their hearts, minds and souls
to seek a fuller experience of His grace, gifts and guidance in
their daily lives. Each month will include a different theme or
topic reflecting the interests and spiritual growth important to
every Catholic man. We encourage all adult men 18 and older
to join us. Call Tom (290-2699) or Bobby (914-263-6451) for
more information.
ARE YOU LAID OFF FROM WORK AND
WAITING TO BE REHIRED? If so, we can
surely use your help at St. Gregory with our
many summer maintenance projects:
painting, washing windows, carpentry,
plumbing, and the like. If you have the time and the
inclination, please call Father and he will be happy to put you
to work. [947-1873]
ADULT INITIATION AND CONVERSION Here is an invitation
that you, a friend or family member won’t want to miss. Are
you an adult who has never been baptized, or baptized in
another faith and now wish to become Catholic? The RCIA
process also welcomes adults who have been baptized Catholic
but never completed their initiation with the sacraments of
Communion and Confirmation. If you are looking for a place
to belong, a community with whom you can share questions
and beliefs, perhaps you or a friend would like to find out
more about the Catholic Church. Call Father at the parish
office (947-1873).
OLD GLORY Many times at a funeral of a
veteran, the flag that drapes the coffin is
presented to the family at the cemetery on
behalf of the President of the United States
and a grateful nation. What happens to
these flags? We’d like to use them at St.
Greg’s to fly on our flag staff. Why not call
the office and make arrangements to
remember the dead in a tangible way?
HOSPITALIZATION If you’re planning to enter the hospital,
please notify the Catholic Chaplain at Good Samaritan, Nyack
or Helen Hayes Hospitals. Be sure to tell the admitting office
that you are Catholic and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo.
Sometimes we are unaware that our parishioners have been
seriously ill. We encourage family members or friends to
inform us about those who are ill or about to undergo major
surgery so we can pray with them, celebrate the Sacrament of
the Sick and bring them the Eucharist. These sacraments bring
comfort and healing to those suffering. Please call the parish
office at 947-1873.
CATHOLICS COME HOME Our Catholic faith
is the largest Christian family in the world.
Our church is a vibrant and growing family,
but we miss our brothers and sisters who
have not been to Mass lately. God loves you
so much that He will not stop searching for you, reaching out
to you, seeking you. Saint Augustine, a convert to the faith at
age 33, once said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our
hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Jesus wants to invite
you back into His big, warm and loving Catholic family in the
Church He founded 2,000 years ago. He’s calling you home,
but the choice is yours. We are family. We’ve missed you.
MONSIGNOR DARBY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
about this newly-created scholarship fund.
grow through private and corporate contributions. Your gift
to this memorial scholarship fund will provide the opportunity
for other young people, who demonstrate the Christian
characteristics of unselfish love and service, to continue their
education at SGB. Donations may be made be sending a check,
