the present. Serial holdings are also strong. Generally speaking, the
collections are struest In language, literature aid history. HcMever, it
aust be noted that political science is also stxgly represented in the
East European collections. It itains excellent holdings of official
docoments of party gresses, parliamentary materials, census,
statistical reports aid other rlications frcs the official ministries
aid ccnnissicxs of the governuent, especially In relation to society,
euny, finance aid foreign relations. It also Includes work on the
axtibitiona1 history of Polard aid Thanania prior to 1930.
Urdoubtedly the materials on Russia and Soviet Union stibite the
real strengths of the collection at the University of Washington. It is
trctqest in history, literature, linguistics arid Russian explorations, all
of which will be discossed in detail later in this presentation. Other
strengths include uxbagecgrahy, foreign policy, art, iasic aid
eoxxaics, especially the sic oeoreaaic sodelling of the distribution arid
allocation of reeonr In the Soviet Union. P.lso worth mentioning are
th. notable reference materials which include virtually all the
standard bibliographies, archival guides, encyclopedia, dictionaries,

newspapers form an integral part of the Russian collection. In addition

It should also be noted that the autoncwms law Library houses a
sizeable collection of Slavic materials including three editions of the

Slavic 1lection at the UW court decisions, treaties aid treatises on
law. Treaties Information is also housed In the main collection.
Closely related to the legal material is the sizeable political
science collection. Included in this are oceplete sets of the
stenographic records of the pre-revoluticnary parliament, the
directives for the five-year plans, arid reports firm the goverrmmnt
planning offices, the central statistics bureau, the government
