Some final thoughts from Jachman and Hoffman

Hoffman have been our
respective president and vice
president for the past two
years.
How successful has the class
of 2011 been?
Taylor: We’re probably the
most successful class ever.
Brandon: It may seem cliché,
but we’re the most successful
class ever.
Taylor: That’s the same thing
I said!

Why did you decide to become a
class advisor?
What was your favorite
moment as president/vice
president?
Taylor: Winning powderpuff!
Brandon: That one time in
Denmark…
Taylor: Also prom!
What was your least favorite
moment as president/vice
president?
Taylor: Dealing with difficult
people.
Brandon: Yes, let’s go with
that.
What was your greatest
accomplishment as
president/vice president?
Brandon: Stepping it up with
fundraisers including the
“school store.”
Taylor: Uniting a class of
27 different ethnicities and
making them feel like the
class of 2011 is family.
Is there anything you wish
you did better?
Brandon: Way to be original,
2011!
Taylor: I wish I would have
known all the amazing
people that I know now at the
beginning of high school.
Brandon: Aww!

have punched Brandon in the
face.
Brandon: Then you’d be
suspended.
Any final words for your
class?
Brandon: It has been an honor
to be your Vice President. See
you on the flip side!
Taylor: I’m so honored to call
all of you my friends. You will
do great things and I am so
proud of all of you.
I’d like to thank you both on
behalf of the Class of 2011.
We couldn’t have done it
without you.
...and some thoughts from your advisors
Novicki: I enjoy working with
students. I feel being a teacher
is more than just imparting
content of your subject, but also
to help the growth of the overall
person. Having a few students
of “my own” each year, being a
class advisor gives me a greater
opportunity.
Kingsley: I was asked by
Mr. Novicki to join him as class
advisor for the class of 2007
when the person he was working
with moved to teaching at a
different school. That was the
year my daughter graduated, so I
didn’t want to be too involved. So
I declined the offer, but said that
I would work with him for the
class of 2011. I will say that it has
been a great experience getting
to know the students better
and watching them mature into
adults.
Why did you specifically decide
to become a class advisor for
the class of 2011?
Novicki: I had just finished with
the Class of 2007, enjoyed it
enough to desire to continue, and
had fresh experience to bring to
the effort.
Kingsley: They are entering
into a time where having a high
school diploma will not guarantee
that they will be able to find a
job; there are people with college
degrees taking those jobs. This is
the first time I have worked with
and followed students over four
years, so I have seen growth and
maturity of the class.
What do you think is the
greatest strength of the class of
2011?
Novicki: As a group, they could
work together when they really
wanted to. We had some really
gifted scholars, artists and
athletes.
Kingsley: It is hard to make a
general statement for an entire
class of students. We have some
wonderful students who have
great work ethics and are striving
for great things- whether it is
college or the military or going
directly into the work force.
What advice do you have to
give to the class of 2011 as they
head out into ‘the real world’?
Novicki: Regardless of our
spiritual beliefs, the only lasting
thing we have in this world is
what we have done for others. Go
beyond your own desires (which
you will never fully satisfy) and
seek out how you can best be a
servant to others.
Kingsley: My advice to the
students as they head away
from OMHS is knowledge is
yours forever. If you do not
go on to college don’t let your
education stop. We as teachers
and professors are here to
facilitate your learning. When
you are no longer in this setting,
it does not mean that learning
ends. It just means that you are
now in charge of what you learn,
and how much time you spend
learning. Intelligence is not
based on just the degrees that
you possess. The advice I gave my
own children was find a career
that you love- getting up in the
morning is not so difficult when
going to work is not a chore.
You all have grown up in the
computer age, and this is a great
tool for learning, but not the only
tool. Observe the world around
you-driving in a car is not always
the best way to see things. If you
ride a bike down the same road,
you will see and hear at least 10
things you didn’t while riding in
a car. Faster is not always better.
All of your journeys start as you
walk out the doors of OMHS for
the last time. Some of your paths
will be a paved trail, some will be
rocky terrain, some will be uphill
for many miles; whatever road
you choose, it is your destiny-
each step you take will make you
stronger.

How long have you been
teaching at Owings Mills HS?
Since 1994, so 17 years.

Did you teach anywhere else
and for how long?
I taught at Milford Mill HS for
16 years before coming to
Owings Mills.
Did you ever teach anyone
famous?
I taught Jon Matlack who was
a professional baseball player,
and Brian Jordan, who played
professional baseball and
football.
What classes did you teach?
I have always taught English.
Did you ever coach a sports
team or were you an advisor
for a club?
I never was a coach for a
sports team, but I have been
the advisor for Jewish Student
Union, Tight Rope Club, and
Writer’s Block.
When you were younger did
you envision yourself being a
teacher?
Yes, ever since I was in the 5 th
grade I wanted to be a teacher.
What do you plan to do once
you are retired?
I am going to travel, take lessons
for classes, go to the gym, and
read a lot, so I’ll be busy.
