About Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is
a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development
from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and fi nally to a university
in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States,
and excellence, ranging from its 13 NCAA championships to its international reputation in a number
of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating
a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s
a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic
programs and a popular recreation center.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through
nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and
distance learning courses on public television.
The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000
people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more
than 80 retail stores, restaurants and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and
theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre
and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New
York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
Enrollment— Total enrollment is over 8,040,
with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class
rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits
one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention
rate signifi cantly higher than the national
average. About 60 percent are women and 10
percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent
of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in
their chosen fi elds.
Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees,
Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty,
70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and
72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is
organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs,
Administration, Student Life and University
Advancement. Governance is through the State
System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors
and through the university’s Council of
Trustees.
Bloomsburg Facts
Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63
baccalaureate degrees,18 master’s degrees and
a joint doctoral degree in elementary education
in cooperation with Indiana University of
Pennsylvania.
Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students
receive some form of fi nancial aid; average
amount of aid is $10,026 per year.
Cost —About $6,000 per semester for Pennsylvania
residents (tuition, fees, typical room and
meal plans), $9,800 for non-residents.
School Colors, Mascot— The school colors,
originally “lemon and garnet,” have been
maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early
1930s, the Husky became the school mascot
when a dog owned by a faculty member
accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an
expedition to the South Pole.
Head Coach Mike Collins
Mike Collins begins
his second season as the
Huskies head baseball
coach.
Collins came to
Bloomsburg after spending
four seasons as the top
assistant at Binghamton
University.
In his fi rst season as
head coach, Collins led the Huskies to an 8-12
PSAC record, falling just one game short of a
playoff berth.
A former Division I player, Collins was
very instrumental in the recruiting process for
Binghamton, and played a prominent role in the
success of the Bearcats program helping the team
to a berth in the America East playoffs in just the
fourth season of Division One competition. He
also held a successful Crack of the Bat summer
and winter camps for youngsters in the Greater
Binghamton area.
Collins previously served as head coach
at Keystone College, compiling a 90-75 overall
mark for the junior college in La Plume, Pa. His
2001 team won a school-record 18 consecutive
games en route to a 28-12 record and runner-up
fi nish in Region 19. In 2000 and 2001, Collinscoached
teams earned pre-season national
rankings, and he produced 11 all-region and
two All-America players during his tenure at
Keystone.
Collins played Division I baseball at St.
Joseph’s University in Philadelphia before
graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in
politics in 1996. He was a two-time team captain
and four-year letterwinner.
Brian Albertson enters his second season as the pitching coach for the
Huskies.
Prior to joining the staff at Bloomsburg, Albertson spent the 12 years
coaching as an assistant at Danville HS and Danville American Legion.
Albertson attended Bloomsburg University after graduating from Danville
in 1987. He has worked and spoke at numerous baseball camps in the area
including the Huskies baseball camp and Midwest Baseball Academy.

Assistant Coach Justin Wenger
Justin Wenger begins
his fi rst year on the
Huskies staff. He is
responsible for catchers,
outfi eld defense and
recruiting. He also assists
Coach Collins with the
offense.
Coach Wenger recently
completed his rookie
season with the Amarillo
Dillas of the United Baseball League, an
independent professional baseball league located
in the Southwest.
Prior to professional baseball, Coach
Wenger was an assistant coach at his alma mater,
Division I Delaware State University. While a
2007 Roster
student-athlete, Coach Wenger distinguished
himself as a two-time all-conference selection
and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation
“toughest to strike-out” two years in a row. In
his senior year he hit .370 with only 8 strikeouts
in 165 at-bats while throwing out 35% of base
stealers.
Coach Wenger started his collegiate career
at Hagerstown Community College. While in
Junior College he was all conference, all-region,
all-east, top 25 in the country in batting and led
Hagerstown to a Region XX championship. A
2007 Season Preview
The 2007 Bloomsburg University baseball
team has high hopes after last season when
they made a late run and narrowly missed the
conference playoffs. After a slow start to the
2006 season, the Huskies rallied to win six of
their fi nal seven games but fell just one game shy
of a playoff berth.
The Huskies have made several
improvements in order to get themselves over
the hump. “Our infi eld defense was an issue
for us last year.” said Collins. “We’ve recruited
several new players and will have a new look
infi eld this season. We also are more athletic
this year. We have versatile guys who can play
several positions and steal some bases.”
CATCHER
Vinnie James will return behind the dish after
moving to second base last season because of
an arm injury. James, a .312 career hitter, had
another solid season for the Huskies, batting .311
in 37 games.
Backing up James will be Rich Letts and Nick
Lerch. “Rich can really catch and throw,” added
Collins. “Defensively he can really shut down
the running game.” Lerch was an infi elder last
season but will convert to a catcher this season.
“Lerch is a good athlete who can also do a great
job as a DH,” said Collins. “He has shown steady
improvement at the plate.”
FIRST BASE
Kevin Ward had a great freshman year hitting
.326 and leading the team with six home runs.
Ward continued to get better as the year went on
and was productive in the league. He will be
6
Vinnie James batted .311 last season
expected to start at fi rst base this season.
SECOND BASE
Preston Hitchock and Tony Donofry both had
excellent fall seasons and will each see time at
second base. Hitchcock, a sophomore transfer
from Lock Haven, is a productive offensive
player who has some juice in his bat and can
steal bases. Donofry, a freshman, will provide
some depth and can play the left side of the
infi eld as well.
SHORTSTOP
Matt Allen, a junior transfer from Clarion, will
see the majority of time at shortstop. Allen is a
proven collegiate player and will be expected to
anchor the infi eld for the Huskies this season.
Freshman Donaven Rodriguez will also see
time at shortstop. “Donaven is an extremely
athletic player who is capable of playing short,
second, and third and will battle for time at these
positions,” said Collins.
THIRD BASE
At third base freshmen Paul Eckley and Zach
Silver will battle for playing time. “Both are
fantastic defensively and will really help out the
pitching staff with their gloves,” added Collins.
“Both of them will have an opportunity to play.”
OUTFIELD
Senior Matt Robinson will be in left fi eld once
again this season. Robinson, who was named
team MVP last season, was among the team
leaders in almost every offensive category last
season.

2007 Season Preview
Senior Andy Bucher will be in back right fi eld
this season. “Bucher is a great leader through
his work ethic and we are expecting a great year
from him,” said Collins.
In center fi eld, a number of players will
compete for time. Freshman Chris Tressler,
junior transfer David Miller and sophomore
Kevin Plott will each share time in the outfi eld.
PITCHING
The Huskies will have a number of upper
classmen returning to the rotation this season.
Seniors Casey Markey, David Rute, Robinson
and junior Dustin Johnson will all be key
members of the rotation this season.
“Casey’s had a lot of success throughout his
career,” noted Collins. “He’s excited to come
back and show everyone what type of pitcher he
can be.”
Johnson had a solid 2006 season, leading the
team with four victories and throwing seven
complete games. “Dustin might be the hardest
working guy in the program,” said Collins.
“He has worked hard during the off-season to
improve his velocity.”
“Rute pitched well for us last season and has
the ability to be an effective conference starter
again this year,“added Collins.
Robinson, who stepped into the rotation
because of injuries last season, will also be
looked upon to get outs. “He’s extraordinarily
competitive,” added Collins. “He’s just
unfl appable on the mound and knows how to
handle diffi cult situations.”
Sophomore Michael Griggs, who came on
strong at the end of last season will also be part
of the starting rotation. Griggs ended the season
with 21 consecutive innings without allowing an
earned run.
Freshman Grant Kernaghan will also be in the
mix. Kernaghan had a strong fall season and
will get an opportunity to start early on.
In the bullpen, sophomore Paul Culbertson
and freshmen Jonathan Derkits and Bryan
Siegfried will also be key members.
Left handed pitcher Chris Carter will be
looked to get the left handed batters out and
Tressler will also see time out of the bullpen in
addition to playing the outfi eld.
Seth Pauling is a big righty who will also be
Matt Robinson led the team in E.R.A and
was third in batting average in 2006
looked upon to get outs and provide innings out
of the pen.
OVERALL
“Last year was a great learning experience for
our players,” noted Collins. “We really tested
them early with the quality of our schedule.
We have quite a few returning players who
understand that you have to fi ght through
adversity in order to be successful.”
Last season the Huskies had a very diffi cult
non-conference schedule playing some of the
top teams in the nation, including top-ranked
Georgia College and State University as well as
USC-Aiken and Lander University. This season
will be no different as the Huskies will play top
collegiate programs such as Carson-Newman
and Tusculum College. Coach Collins hopes
the diffi cult schedule will once again make them
better prepared for their conference games.
“We’ve had a great off-season,” said Collins.
“We made a great effort in the weight room and
the off-season conditioning. There’s great unity
in the locker room and everyone’s excited about
what lies ahead. I’m looking forward to the
season and I think we defi nitely have the makeup
and the talent to compete for a conference
championship.”
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 55 years of organized competition, has
established itself as one of the most respected NCAA Division II athletic conferences.
In its history the PSAC has laid claim to 37 NCAA team champions and 204 individual
title winners, giving credence to its fi ne athletic tradition. The conference has prospered on the
national level in recent years, as it annually has close to one-third of its teams participating in
NCAA postseason competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself as the second largest Division II
conference in terms of sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22 different sports.
While proud of its athletic success, the league has also thrived in an academic sense. The
number of student-athletes designated by the conference as “Scholar-Athletes” - those who have
attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better - has increased every year since that
standard was adopted in 1995-96. The impressive number of yearly designees reached 1,579 in 2005-
06, 213 more than the previous year. Furthermore, the most recent fi gure is nearly double the total of
those in the mid-1990s.
The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering men’s athletic
programs within the 14 state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to
the interest and growth of women’s athletics, the conference was restructured to provide for women’s
programs.
From its inception, each conference member selected its own competitive division within the NCAA.
In 1980, however, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire conference to Division II. Although all
14 institutions are members of NCAA Division II, eight schools have also elected to compete at the
Division I level in select sports.
In 1983, all member institutions were granted university status as a result of Legislative Act 188,
which formed Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The system now enrolls in excess
of 107,000 students. The alumni of the State System is over 600,000, which includes roughly 405,000
Pennsylvanians.
One of the largest conferences in the nation, the PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 14
member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistants and an intern at its headquarters in
Lock Haven, Pa.
