MTV <strong>Stand</strong>s For Music Television?<br />

Every year MTV hosts <strong>the</strong> Video Music Awards, an opportunity<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> vain and self-righteous “artists” that populate our iPods<br />

and illegally downloaded music libraries to congregate and celebrate<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir achievements in <strong>the</strong> world of music. Oh, wait, that‟s <strong>the</strong><br />

Grammy‟s.<br />

Let us hearken back to a time, a time when MTV‟s name actually<br />

meant “Music Television” and not “That channel with Teen<br />

Mom and Jersey Shore”. But how can we? All <strong>the</strong> students here at<br />

Kingfisher were too young <strong>for</strong> that MTV. We‟ve never known that<br />

MTV.<br />

MTV now plagues <strong>the</strong> television airwaves with such fare as “16<br />

and Pregnant”, cheap knock-offs of “Superbad”, and several series<br />

about teenagers doing drugs and having premarital sex and acting<br />

mature and blah, blah, blah that only last one season (“Skins” anyone?).<br />

Sunday night‟s VMAs seemed almost like a death rattle ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than <strong>the</strong> spectacle that <strong>the</strong>y attempted <strong>for</strong>. Lady Gaga dressed as a<br />

man, complete with 5-o‟clock shadow, Justin Bieber tried his hard-<br />

What is art? Students<br />

in Art I classes began<br />

<strong>the</strong> school year answering<br />

this question.<br />

Some believed art<br />

was simply a class by<br />

which to round out<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir schedule or<br />

works hung in rarely<br />

visited museums.<br />

Coloring and painting<br />

were a few o<strong>the</strong>r top<br />

suggestions.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>rs thought<br />

art to be a fun, handson<br />

approach to selfexpression<br />

(or at least<br />

that is what <strong>the</strong>y told<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir teacher!). The<br />

back of our text book defines art as a “visual statement that<br />

represents <strong>the</strong> real world, communicates an idea or feeling, or<br />

presents an interesting design.” While this simple statement<br />

catches <strong>the</strong> gist of art, I believe <strong>the</strong> importance and relevance<br />

of true art depends upon <strong>the</strong> thought of <strong>the</strong> individual who<br />

creates or perceives each work.<br />

I invite you this year to wander by <strong>the</strong> art room. See what<br />

fellow peers are designing…whe<strong>the</strong>r you look up at our ceiling<br />

tiles or leaf through <strong>the</strong> pages of Art II‟s altered journals, I<br />

hope you are pleasantly surprised at <strong>the</strong> talent in our school<br />

and discover a little of “what art is” <strong>for</strong> yourself!<br />

“OMG” per<strong>for</strong>mance from last year.<br />

Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry successfully failed at looking creative<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir “nuance” get-ups <strong>the</strong>y donned. I‟m not sure what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are trying to do, but it‟s not working. Please, stop. We‟ve had<br />

enough. That goes <strong>for</strong> you too, Gaga. And, <strong>for</strong> some reason, Justin<br />

Bieber was carrying around a small snake. Riddle me that.<br />

It had its high notes though: Ricky “Rozay-Ugh-Yuh-Da-Boss”<br />

Ross shedded his hood persona and took a humorous turn in several<br />

skits with host Kevin Hart, who is always a stellar comedian, Adele<br />

proved she may be one of <strong>the</strong> few singers that can actually sing, and<br />

Ke$ha was nowhere to be seen.<br />

Through out <strong>the</strong> broadcast we were bombarded with previews<br />

<strong>for</strong> MTV‟s new show “I Just Want <strong>My</strong> Pants Back”, <strong>the</strong>ir new show<br />

about mature, going-nowhere, twenty-somethings that are cool<br />

enough to have sex. We‟ll see how well <strong>the</strong> show goes.<br />

In a world where <strong>the</strong> music industry is nothing but samples of<br />

old songs and remixes, what hope do we have <strong>for</strong> an actual Music<br />

Television?<br />
