Opinion by: Logan Alexander, Editor-in-Chief Every year MTV hosts the Video Music Awards, an opportunity for the vain and self-righteous “artists” that populate our iPods and illegally downloaded music libraries to congregate and celebrate their achievements in the world of music. Oh, wait, that‟s the Grammy‟s. Let us hearken back to a time, a time when MTV‟s name actually meant “Music Television” and not “That channel with Teen Mom and Jersey Shore”. But how can we? All the students here at Kingfisher were too young for that MTV. We‟ve never known that MTV. MTV now plagues the television airwaves with such fare as “16 and Pregnant”, cheap knock-offs of “Superbad”, and several series about teenagers doing drugs and having premarital sex and acting mature and blah, blah, blah that only last one season (“Skins” anyone?). Sunday night‟s VMAs seemed almost like a death rattle rather than the spectacle that they attempted for. Lady Gaga dressed as a man, complete with 5-o‟clock shadow, Justin Bieber tried his hard- What is Art? By Alisha Wallace, KHS Art Instructor What is art? Students in Art I classes began the school year answering this question. Some believed art was simply a class by which to round out their schedule or works hung in rarely visited museums. Coloring and painting were a few other top suggestions. Others thought art to be a fun, handson approach to selfexpression (or at least that is what they told their teacher!). The back of our text book defines art as a “visual statement that represents the real world, communicates an idea or feeling, or presents an interesting design.” While this simple statement catches the gist of art, I believe the importance and relevance of true art depends upon the thought of the individual who creates or perceives each work. I invite you this year to wander by the art room. See what fellow peers are designing…whether you look up at our ceiling tiles or leaf through the pages of Art II‟s altered journals, I hope you are pleasantly surprised at the talent in our school and discover a little of “what art is” for yourself! est to look like an artist, and Chris Brown ripped off Usher‟s “OMG” performance from last year. Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry successfully failed at looking creative with their “nuance” get-ups they donned. I‟m not sure what they are trying to do, but it‟s not working. Please, stop. We‟ve had enough. That goes for you too, Gaga. And, for some reason, Justin Bieber was carrying around a small snake. Riddle me that. It had its high notes though: Ricky “Rozay-Ugh-Yuh-Da-Boss” Ross shedded his hood persona and took a humorous turn in several skits with host Kevin Hart, who is always a stellar comedian, Adele proved she may be one of the few singers that can actually sing, and Ke$ha was nowhere to be seen. Through out the broadcast we were bombarded with previews for MTV‟s new show “I Just Want My Pants Back”, their new show about mature, going-nowhere, twenty-somethings that are cool enough to have sex. We‟ll see how well the show goes. In a world where the music industry is nothing but samples of old songs and remixes, what hope do we have for an actual Music Television? So, without further ado: 1. Scary Monsters and Nice Spirits- SKRILLEX from the Scary Monsters and Nice Spirits EP. - Only recently have I dwelled in techno and electronica, however, former FORM FIRST TO LAST front man, Sonny Moore, has a talented knack for this breed of music. Listen; if you don‟t love it, maybe techno is not for you. 2. Simple Math- MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA from the Simple Math album. - Manchester Orchestra is ironically not an orchestra, but also, not from Manchester (I don‟t even think they‟ve been to Manchester!). Their smooth psychedelic sound is like the soundtrack to a coffee shop, leaving you feeling mellow, thoughtful, and relaxed. 3. Here We Go Again (Repeat Offender) - VONNEGUTT from the Appetizer EP. - This is actually the first song I heard by Vonnegutt. Funny and catchy, I cannot stop listening to them. Just buy their whole EP, it‟ll be the only thing you play for the rest of the year. 4. Stare like You‟ll Stay- CIRCA SURVIVE form the Appendage album. - One of my favorite songs. I admit, Circa Survive may not be everyone‟s cup of tea. Keep an open mind before listening. Beautiful song. 5. That Fire- BLACK TIDE from the Post Mortem album. - This song is currently number two on the Top 100. It almost seems to me as though it‟s taking a pop approach to hardcore or post-hardcore. This may be a sign of cross over potential in for the mainstream. Memories of Summer Opinion by Dalton Palmer Summer vacation, a time of the year every student looks forward to. Staying up late and sleeping in all day, what is not to like? No one ever wants to see summer end, and yet it does every year. School seems to always be right around the corner, but you still cling to those last days of vacation. Then it hits you like a wall, and you are confronted with homework and tests, not to mention you have to get up early now. When you get back to school everyone likes to talk about what they did over the summer. Some people took vacations to other places, while others just relaxed at home enjoying every second. Everyone spent their summer in some way, and everyone has some good memories that they do not want to ever forget. However there are always some memories we would not mind forgetting about, some things we just want to push to the back of our minds. Often these moments are embarrassing for us, but hilarious for others. So we try and avoid them, life just seems better that way. Sure we might not remember every second of our summers, but we enjoy the best parts of it forever. School might have started and took summer away from you, but at least you had fun. Do not let school drag you down, just get up and get ready. Before you know it summer will be here again and you will be making new memories. Life is what you make it, right? Why not make it something grand? Have fun! Glee Club By: Caitlynn Niestempski Do, Ra, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do, is what the Glee Club does to warm up every Monday from 3:30 P.M. to 4:00, the class last till 5. This is not a club about the hit TV show Glee. This is a club for kids who can‟t come to Choir class during school. The new choir director Ms. Edwards helps the Glee Club kids perfect their talent of singing. There are only a hand full of Glee Club kids so far and are waiting for more to come and join their voice with the others. Glee club is a place where a talented boy or girl can put their voice to the test. Ms. Edwards is doing her best to find music that the Glee Club kids can sing. Songs like “Don‟t Stop Believing” by the TV show Glee. Kena Pechacek said, “You don‟t have to be a girl to join Glee Club.” There are two boys already in the enrolled. If you are a singer and want your voice to be heard then join the Glee Club from 3:30 to 5:00 every Monday in the band and vocal room at Kingfisher High School.
