Powell Gardens Trip Fun and
Informative
Kudos to Marie Pasley for organizing a great trip to
Powell Gardens near Kingsville, Mo., on June 16. More
than 20 Heart of Missouri Master Gardeners and their
friends hopped a private bus to visit the 915-acre
property 30 miles east of Kansas City, Mo.
We had a private tour of the vegetable gardens and
orchard by a very knowledgeable Master Gardener from
the Kansas City area.
Then we had independent walking tours of the rest of
the gardens. We visited the Chapel, admired the fairy
houses, and meandered through the perennial gardens
and water gardens.
Folks who attended the trip can count part of it as
Continuing Education when they report their hours.
Missouri Master Gardener Association, Inc. Membership Drive
This pretty bronze and green bug is a destructive
Japanese Beetle. The invasive species arrived in our
area a few years ago and feeds on more than 400 types
of plants. They quickly defoliate trees and roses.
In June, I trapped 1,000 in a day in a $7 trap from
Lowes. Chickens and ducks love to eat the beetles, but
the bugs have to be knocked out of the high branches
for domestic birds to eat them. I knock them into a
wide cup, then dump the squirming mass in front of my
flock.
Last year, University Extension asked the Missouri Master Gardener Advisory Board to form a state association in an
effort to save the Master Gardener Program in Missouri. The hope is that the Association will be able to raise money
and awareness to keep the program going and one day fund a new state coordinator. The Board did as it was asked
and filed with the state and with the IRS.
The Missouri Master Gardener Association, Inc., (MoMGA) is now officially recognized by the state and has received
its 501(c)3 status. Individuals and chapters are invited to join. Membership is $2 per person per year. MoMGA asks
that the chapters either pay $2 per active member, or collect $2 from each interested active person and submit a
roster and payment. Each chapter with paid members can have one representative on the Board (the chapter
president or another designated person). Old elected Advisory Board members will stay on for a year to help with
the transition. Chapters that submit more than 5,000 volunteer hours per year can have an additional
representative on the Board.
Master Gardeners of the Ozarks is the first chapter to pay annual dues for all of its members. The Master Gardeners
of Greater Kansas City has paid for the first year MoMGA membership for all of its active members. The Heart of
Missouri Master Gardeners will need to decide if and how it will join. Chapters that join also have the option of
opening their own bank accounts under the Association’s 501(c)3 umbrella (rather than having the accounts through
Extension as they now do). This is decided by each chapter. Some will want to stay under Extension, some will want
their own accounts.
Lifetime memberships are available to any active Master Gardener who is interested for a one-time payment.
Bronze level-$50, and receive 5% off at state Master Gardener conferences; Silver Level-$100 and receives 10%
discount at annual state MG conventions; Gold Level-$200, receives 15% off and special seating at MG conventions.
(Silver and Gold level payments can be made in several installments. Anyone who signs up for one level can pay the
difference and upgrade to the next level if they want to in the future). Additional benefits among all levels are that
you pay only once, you receive a special nametag and there will be future discounts at Botanical Gardens in
Missouri (this is in the works). If you are interested in a lifetime membership, contact MoMGA Treasurer Patrick
Farrell at sibleyorchards@hotmail.com.
Questions? Ideas? Comments? Ask Laura Redfield-Jacobs, lauraredfield1@centurytel.net, or Marie Pasley,
