INSTALLING AND STARTING UP
SETTING UP KAO
Your Kao CD should run automatically when inserted. The Kao Autorun
menu should show the following options: install, play, visit web site, manual,
configure, quit and uninstall.
• Select manual to read this document!.
• Select configure to set screen resolution and color depth: these setting will be used
during the game. The lower resolution the more smooth the game will run.
• Choose visit web site to explore KAO 2 internet homepage.
• If you have not already installed Kao, please choose option Install.
• If you have already installed Kao, inserting the CD will display a menu screen allowing
you to play directly.
• If you want to start the adventure choose play.
• To quit the menu choose option exit.
• If you want to remove the game from harddrive choose option uninstall
• If you do not see this menu screen, double-click on the „My Computer“ icon on
your desktop, right-click on the CD/DVD drive icon, and select „Autorun“.
INSTALLING FROM THE CD
From the menu screen, select install, and follow the on-screen instructions to
install Kao on your system. If you wish to do so, you can modify the installation
path, or you can use the pre-selected one.

MICROSOFT DirectX®
During the installation, your computer will be tested for your version of DirectX®.
If the test fail, youʻll be asked if you want to install Microsoftʻs DirectX® software.
Kao requires DirectX® 8.1 or later and you should allow the installation to proceed.
DirectX® is basically a set of drivers and library functions that can detect whathardware
is in your computer, and then act as an interface between that hardware and the
applications that need to make use of it. In our case, the application is Kao. If the
DirectX installer makes changes to your systemʻs configuration then it will ask you to
reboot your machine. Itʻs best to do this sooner rather than later. After Kao has finished
copying itself to your hard drive, you are ready to run the game.
BEGINNING THE GAME
STARTING THE GAME
When the title screen appears, press the Esc key at any time to access the Main Menu.
MAIN MENU
New game – Start a new game;
Load game – Continue from a previously saved game;
Options – Configure the game settings: keyboard, sound volume, and music
volume. Here you can define your controller configuration, and adjust
the volume of the game music soundtrack and the game volume;
Quit – Exit the game.
SAVING AND LOADING GAMES
LOADING
You can load a previously saved game from the main menu :
• highlight the Load Game option using the cursor keys,
• confirm by pressing ENTER or jump key,
• select the game you want to load (cursor keys),
• press ENTER or jump key.
SAVING
While youʻre playing, you can save a game at any time:
• press the ESC key to bring the option menu on screen,
• select the Save Game option using the cursor keys,
• confirm by pressing ENTER or jump key,
• select the slot where you want to save the game,
• press ENTER to confirm or jump key.
If you select a slot that already contains game data, you will be asked to
confirm that you want to overwrite this saved game.
While loading the saved game, you will start at the beginning of the last
saved level. If Kao dies, he will always reappear, and play will start again at
the previous checkpoint.
CONTROLLING KAO
The Options on this page allows you to change a number of Kao default controls.
Selecting a Control allows you to choose the corresponding action.
Kao is compatible with the joystick.

STORY
Kao the Kangaroo is back in a new adventure! Our cute, young, yellow kangaroo
has to deliver the world of animals from hands of an evil Hunter and his wicked
henchmen. This time, he can count on his friends, like the firefly and the parrot, to
help him out achieve his difficult task.
Help Kao on his quests as he explores more than 20 colorful, detailed levels
spread across 5 unique worlds, from the Arctic to Australia. Control amazing
new vehicles, including a snowboard, a catapult, a pelican, a water barrel
and a motorboat! Master 7 fighting techniques, from boomerang throwing to
devastating tail attacks, and overcome over 30 challenging enemies! Lots of
Power-ups to collect, hidden areas to find, and bonus levels to explore.
Simple, user-friendly control system. So grab your boxing gloves, and get
ready for action!!!

KAOʼS WORLD
Kao starts his adventures in the harbour. Here he can practice some basic
moves to get warmed up before entering the different worlds where dangers
and great quests await him!
Leaving the harbour, he goes to the hub. This is the central point from
which he is able to enter the forest, island, ice and ocean worlds. He can also
reach the 5 different bonus levels from the hub, but only if he has collected
enough crystals in the various worlds! He needs to have collected 50, 100,
150, 200, or 250 crystals to do so, depending on the bonus level.
Moreover Kao can collect special power stars. Every 50 stars Kao
improves one of his skill (e.g. he can jump further).Finally, once Kao has
overcome all the dangers in the different parts of the worlds he has travelled,
and once he has collected 3,000 coins over the course of his adventures, he
will be able to come back to the hub and bribe the guard to enter the Hunterʼs
town, face him in the final duel with the help of the Parrot, and rescue all the
imprisoned animals!

HIS FRIENDS
Parrot
A little bit scared and
grumpy but very helpful! He keeps Kao up to date on what
is happening to the poor animals around the world, and helps
him follow the right path to save them all.
Beaver
The Beaver lives in the forest world and usually
has some kind of riddle to solve! Very energetic!
Firefly
She is Kaoʼs guardian angel and helps him out in
all difficult situations with her good advice.
Bear
The fragile little bear lives in the winter world
and is counting very much on Kaoʼs help!
Turtle
Lives in the ocean. Usually Kao has to rescue
him using torpedo power ups.
HIS MAIN ENEMIES
Gnome
Runs at you with his great hammer!
Dynamite
Runs after Kao and explodes henever
it touches anything, including Kao.
Hornet
Flies around and attacks by sticking his stinger into
the ground where you are standing.
Chestnut
Runs at you! It can be defeated with one punch
though!
Pike
Jumps out of the water, jaws snapping!
Venus Flytrap
It can grab Kao and chew him for a moment before
spitting him out!
Porcupine
Walks around. Do not touch him!
The Magician
Tries to put a spell on Kao. Hard to defeat!
Bear
Cannot be defeated – the only thing to do
is run away from him!
Ranger
Shoots bullets and can also hit you with his rifle!
The Penguin
Slides and tries to bump into you!
Spider
Drops down and attacks Kao. Use boomerangs to
defeat it!
Stalactites
They drop down, open up (legs and arms appear),
and run towards you. They can be defeated with
one punch.
Railroad engineer
A very mean opponent with a very strange accent!
Puffer Fish
Floats slowly in your direction. Explodes like
a sea mine! Watch out!

Fat Fish
Attacks by swimming towards you!
Eel
Swims in your direction and can hurt you.
The Jaw
Snaps at Kao with his massive jaws!
Octopus
Scary, scary, scary!
Fisherman
The mean Fisherman has a big rifle and shoots bullets
at Kao!
Toucan
Flies around and attacks by sticking his hard bill into
the ground where you are standing.
Scorpion
Suddenly gets off the ground and attacks. Kao can
defeat him using his jump-attack.
Boatswain
Runs after Kao and attacks him with his stick!
Crab
Suddenly gets off the ground and attacks. Kao can
defeat it using jump-attack.
The Vase
The hand comes out of the vase and hits Kao.
Pirate
He can use very special tricks when you fight him!
POWERUPS
Hunter
What a mean, despicable character!
Letʼs hope that Kao will be able to defeat him!
Energy
Collecting this power up increases Kaoʼs
energy.
Flying Helmet
Who said Kao couldnʼt fly?
Speed up
Allows Kao to run at the speed of the light!
Fish
Your friend Pelican needs them to stay in the air longer.
Crystal
Kao has to collect a number of crystals to gain access to bonus
levels via the Hub. The required number is given at the
entrance of each bonus level (50, 100, 150, 200, or 250 crystals
collected).
Boomerang
Collect boomerangs to throw at your enemies!
Coin
Kao needs 3000 coins to bribe the Boatswain and get into the
Hunterʼs world!
Stars
Collect stars to improve Kaoʼs skills.
Ring-bell
When Kao dies, he will reappear at last checkpoint that he
picked up

OBJECTS
Platform
Kao can steer the platform by running from one side to
another.
Water barrel
The barrel floats with the riverʼs current – Kao can
steer left of right.
Torpedoes
Underwater controllable object. Kao can steer and
shoot them.
Catapult
Kao can shoot pinecones using the catapult.
Motorboat
The motorboat can speed up, slow down and jump
using platforms.
Badger
Kao has to herd little badgers to their dens.
Pelican
Pelican can run and fly with Kao on his back!
Comes from Scotland and is now an inhabitant of
the Island World. He is very helpful when Kao has
to fly over the sea or wooden platforms.
Snowboard
Use the snowboard to glide and jump!
HINTS & TIPS
- When using the motorboat, you can skim over certain obstacles if you use your
rocket engines! There are also turbo power ups to increase the boatʼs maximum
speed.
- Use the Camera controls to aim accurately when throwing nuts.
- After a double jump, use your tail attack while still in the air – Kao will jump even
further.
- You can still control Kao a little when he bounces on the jump pad while flying.
- Collect crystals – for every 50 of them, Kao gets access to a bonus level hidden in
the towers in the Hub.
- When you are trying to get away from the bear, press the down arrow – Kao will
adjust to stay on the path so you donʼt have to turn when road turns; all you have to
do is avoid obstacles and jump over water!
- For every collected 50 stars Kao improves one of his skill.
