3.1 Kenya, Nairobi<br />
Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with an estimated urban population <strong>of</strong><br />
between 3 <strong>and</strong> 4 million. According to the 1999 Census, in the administrative area <strong>of</strong><br />
Nairobi, 2,143,254 inhabitants lived within 684 km 2 (264 sq mi). Nairobi is currently the<br />

largest city in Africa. Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product Personal Purchasing Parity<br />
GDP PPP economy was estimated in 2001 at US$ 66.48 billion, with a calculated per<br />
capita PPP income <strong>of</strong> US$ 1,704.49 [14] .<br />
The <strong>of</strong>ficial currency <strong>of</strong> Kenya is the Kenya shilling (code: KES, sign: KSh). As <strong>of</strong> April<br />

3.1.1 Current status regarding availability <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>mercury</strong>-<strong>containing</strong><br />
fever thermometers for clinical <strong>and</strong> home use in Nairobi, Kenya<br />
3.1.1.1 Kenyan Clinical Thermometer Survey<br />
Participants. The Clinical Thermometer Survey was undertaken in seven (7) hospitals/doctors’<br />
practices in Nairobi, Kenya. Interviews were held at public <strong>and</strong> private<br />
hospitals located in Nairobi, Kenya.<br />
Health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals indicated <strong>mercury</strong>-free thermometers are in-use at<br />
most <strong>of</strong>fices. Most hospitals <strong>and</strong> doctors’ practices used only <strong>mercury</strong>-free clinical<br />
thermometers; one (1) hospital/doctor’s practice used both; <strong>and</strong> three (3) hospitals/<br />
doctors’ practices use <strong>mercury</strong>-free clinical thermometers exclusively. Adoption <strong>of</strong> <strong>mercury</strong>-free<br />
thermometers has not yet replaced <strong>mercury</strong> thermometers.<br />
Health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals stated <strong>mercury</strong>-free thermometers are widely <strong>and</strong> readily<br />
available. Almost all doctors (86%) indicated <strong>mercury</strong> free clinical thermometers<br />
