In Memoriam
Hubert ‘Glen’ Glenzer Jr.
continued
Alaska Pioneer and longtime Anchorage resident, retired U.S. Navy Captain Hubert “Glen” Glenzer Jr., died of
natural causes in his home March 10, 2008.
He was born in the township of Green Grove, Washington, on April 15, 1924, to Hubert and Hilda Glenzer. He
attended River Falls State Teachers College before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Oct. 9, 1942.
During a Navy career that spanned three decades he served in three wars, logged more than 10,000 flight hours in
every aircraft imaginable, and distinguished himself with a host of accomplishments, promotion and citations. After
several tours of duty including assignments at the Pentagon and Commanding Officer on Adak, he earned a Bachelor
of Science in Business Management degree from the University of Maryland, and a Master’s degree in Engineering
Management from George Washington University.
Upon graduating, he moved to Alaska and took a job as the manager for the Alaska Chapter of the Associated
General Contractors where he helped lead Alaska through the oil boom period of the 1970s. He was then appointed
to serve in many Department of Transportation offices, including Deputy Commissioner of the Northern Region, acting
Commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, director of Public Works for the city of Anchorage. He
retired from public office in 1992.
Stan Smith
Some of you knew him as the AGC Convention Committee Chairman, some knew him only as the Dolly Parton
or Tina Turner “wanna-be” at an annual AGC Dinner Dance celebration, but at AGC he was known as a strong supporter
of AGC and a staunch advocate for the construction industry. On May 28, 2008, Stan Smith passed away from
cancer and his passing will affect many AGC members. Those who turned to him for business advice, those who
counted on his support of the industry, but most of all by those who called him friend. He was a past Hard Hat Winner,
a national and local board member, a long standing AGC committee member, and a dedicated friend of AGC.
He will be greatly missed.
Northern Air Cargo ESGR nomination
Northern Air Cargo is one of 2,199 businesses nationwide nominated for the
Secretary of Defense’s Employer Support Freedom Award. The honor is the highest
recognition given to employers of National Guard or Reserve members for
their exceptional support above the requirements of federal law.
This nomination originated with a Northern Air Cargo employee serving in
the National Guard or Reserve.
“NAC is proud of all its employees who serve in the Guard or Reserve and we
are thankful to them and to their families for their service,” said Margot Wiegele
with Northern Air Cargo.
Secretary of Defense William Perry instituted the Freedom Award in 1996 to
publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their employees
who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. The award is the highest in a series
of awards that include the Patriot Award, the Above and Beyond Award, and the
Pro Patria Award.
The 2008 recipients will be announced midsummer and honored in Washington,
D.C., at the 13th annual ceremony on Sept. 18. For more information, visit
