Environmental
Toxins:
Poisonous
substances that
come from outside
of the body and can
be lumped into two
categories:
• Chemicals
• Metals
The question is no longer IF we are toxic … the real question is HOW toxic are we?
Toxic burden is the total accumulation of toxins that the body is dealing with. These
toxins come from a variety of sources but initial exposure actually begins while a baby
is still in the womb!
Are You Toxic?
A recent biomonitoring study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), the Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental
Chemicals, has revealed that out of 212 chemicals tested, all 212 were found to be in
the blood and urine of most Americans. Six chemicals in particular, found in virtually
every person, were identified by the CDC as probable health hazards.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers
(PDE’s). Used as flame retardant,
PDE’s are known to build up in
human fat tissue, causing
damage to the nervous system,
liver and kidneys. Studies also
implicate PDEs in causing sexual
dysfunction, thyroid problems
and brain disorders.
Bisphenol A (BPA). Found in
plastic products and can linings,
primary human exposure comes
through food packaging-‐ like
plastic bottles. Because BPA is a
reproductive, developmental,
and systemic toxicant in animal
studies and is weakly estrogenic,
there are many questions about
its potential impact particularly
on children’s health and the
environment.
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)
Used in non-‐stick cookware, stain-‐
resistant clothing, certain food
packaging and other heat-‐
resistant products. Studies verify
that PFOA contributes to infertility
and other reproductive problems
as well as liver and immune
system dysfunction.
Acrylamide. Chemical carcinogen
formed when carbohydrate foods
are cooked at high temperatures.
French fries, fried chicken, coffee
– all have high acrylamide content
Also used in plastics, cosmetics
and water treatment products.
Perpetual exposure is linked to
cancer and neurological
dysfunction.
This year 75 new chemicals
were added to the essay that had
never before been studied in the
U.S. population. Every chemical
tested in the study, including the
75 new ones, was found to be
present in most or all of the study
participants.
So, where are these toxins
coming from? We know that most
of us are born with a toxin level
from the beginning, but where
does the rest come throughout our
life time. In fact, toxins are
virtually all around us.
Mercury. Most common exposure
route is seafood. May cause
permanent brain damage.
Methyl tert-‐butyl ether (MTBE).
Gasoline additive no longer in use
in the U.S. However, detection of
this toxin is still found in most
people. Additional exposure
comes from second hand cigarette
smoke and causes neurological
and reproductive problems.
Keep in mind, this only describes
6 toxic compounds…. the CDC’s
Fourth National Report on
Human Exposure to
Environmental Chemicals tested
212 chemicals and found ALL to
be in blood and urine of most
Americans!
Conditions and diseases
associated with
excessive toxic burden
+ • Allergies and Asthma
• Diabetes
• Obesity
• Chemical sensitivity (any
adverse physical, mental or
emotional reaction to the
presence of a chemical smell)
• Fibromyalgia & chronic fatigue
• Fertility problems and birth
defects
• Parkinsons
• Bone marrow cancers –
Lymphomas, Leukemias,
Multiple Myeloma
• Chronic infections
• Autoimmune diseases such as
Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis,
Hashimotos thyroiditis, etc.
Other symptoms of
excessive toxic burden
• Fatigue & Weakness
• Depression
• Cognitive problems: brain fog,
memory problems, concentration
• Headaches & Irritability
• Neurological issues: balance
problems, tremors
• Weight gain
• Hormone imbalance
• Poor sleep
• Generalized muscle aches
• Food allergies or chemical
sensitivities
• Abdominal pain
• Kidney distress, elevated liver
enzymes.
• Reduce Your Exposure to Toxins
• 90% of our toxin exposure to certain
chemicals such as PCB’s and dioxins
actually come from the food we eat.
• 35% of all the foods we purchase in the
U.S. supermarkets have measurable
pesticide residues which make their way
into our body.
• Between 5 and 13 different pesticide
residues tainted one of every 10 fruit or
vegetable samples.
• To reduce your exposure via pesticides
and herbicides on your food choose
organic food. Always wash all produce
very well before eating, peeling or
cooking.
• Conventionally raised meat and dairy
products have consistently been tested
and found to have the highest levels of
“hormone disrupting” chemicals in them.
• 25 million pounds of antibiotics a year are
fed to livestock and the animal feed which
is highly sprayed with chemicals as well.
• Animal feed contains high quantities of fat
which allow for the storage of these fat-‐
soluble chemicals . They are then passed
on into the human digestive system and
body when you eat these products.
• Choose free-‐range, hormone, anti-‐biotic
free RGH free, dairy, meats, eggs
whenever possible. Choose fresh, cold-‐
water fish in place of farm raised.
• Environment: Use chemical free products in
your home (soap, detergents, cleaning
products, dryer sheets, natural insect and
weed killers, etc).
• Reduce chlorine exposure by
attaching filters to your shower heads.
(Chloroform is released when
chlorinated water is heated.)
• Avoid personal products with
pthalates, paraben, 4-‐MBC.
• Phalates, another toxin, is found in a large
majority of plastic packaging and can leach
into the foods that you eat. Store food in
non-‐plastic containers and bags when
possible.
• Use stainless steel or glass drinking
containers, reduce or eliminate all plastic
utensils, drinking containers, plates and
storage containers.
• Never microwave food in plastic containers.
• Detox With a Research Supported Program
• In an unhealthy liver, toxins are
unable to be detoxified at the
speed that they are brought to
the liver.
• In these cases toxins build up and
recirculate in the blood
contributing to long-‐term poor
health. These un-‐neutralized, fat-‐
soluble toxins can be stored in
body tissues such as fat, brain
and nervous system causing
systemic symptoms and future
disease processes.
• This program nutritionally
supports your liver and improves
your body’s natural detoxification
processes.
• It will also support your body’s
ability to excrete toxins once they
have been neutralized thus
reducing the chance that they
will recirculate and be stored in
the body.
“This experience enlightened me on just how healthy, I wasn't! With 16 years of vegetarianism (not the junk-‐
food kind) behind me, I’ve always considered myself to be healthy.
I’ll never be sure if it was my diet irritating my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or if my diet was causing
IBS symptoms – but there wasn’t a day I wasn’t bloated, uncomfortable and irregular. I’m a few weeks post-‐
cleanse and the symptoms of my IBS have completely disappeared. I can finally live comfortably on the plant-‐
based diet I prefer!
I fell in love with cooking! It’s so easy in New York to get healthy food on the go – I never spent much
time in the kitchen but the recipes motivated me to put my apron on.
I had more energy! I was full of energy from good food and a good nights sleep, not an energy drink. I
was able to maintain my normal workout routine – but added in some more yoga to stay routed to what my
body needed.
I got skinny! In addition to the inches of bloat that deflated around my waist, I lost 2 lbs and 3% of my
body fat. The week after the cleanse, I lost another 2 lbs.
I got happy! There aren't words to express what a success this was for me! Working with Tracy has
been an incredible experience. Not only was the cleansing experience more then I ever imagined it to be, but I
truly feel as if I found a partner in my wellness journey. I know when I have a question or a thought -‐ I have
someone to share it with. This cleanse changed my life!” -‐ Danielle Shapiro
The Clear Change Program is a 10 Day nutrition-‐based detoxification plan. The program is
designed to enhance the body’s natural metabolic detoxification process while supplying
adequate fuel for both cleansing and other daily activities, providing energy and support for
overall well-‐being. This scientifically designed program provides nutritional supplementation,
a modified elimination diet and comprehensive patient support materials, including a daily
menu guide, recipes and online assistance tools.
“The Clear Change Program is our most patient-‐friendly metabolic detoxification plan to date,
providing science-‐based nutritional support to aid the body's natural processes for clearing the
build-‐up of potentially harmful substances from poor dietary habits, environmental chemicals
and other factors,” said Deanna Minich, PhD, FACN, CNS Vice President of Scientific Affairs at
Metagenics. “Our new program materials are designed to enhance the program experience by
making the dietary and nutritional recommendations as easy and simple as possible,
promoting compliance to achieve expected and reliable outcomes and help patients feel their
best.”
“As more and more people and healthcare professionals discover the health benefits of
metabolic detoxification, it’s vital to select approaches that supply sufficient energy intake
from dietary means. And, just as important, the program should ideally recommend only
supplemental nutrients that offer predictably safe use and scientific support for activities
related to metabolic detoxification,” she concluded.
To complement the targeted combination of science-‐based supplements to support multiple
phases of detoxification, the dietary program offers further advantages by considering the
nutrient intake requirements for the body's normal clearance activities, which are complex,
energy-‐ and nutrient-‐driven processes. The hundreds of different enzymes and biochemical
pathways involved in detoxification require the presence of specific vitamins and minerals in
order to function optimally. Additionally, research has shown that the process of
detoxification can be compromised by insufficient energy reserves in the form of readily
available calories. Water or juice fasts may deprive the body of these vital nutrients and
adequate energy intake. The Clear Change diet, which has been clinically designed and
recommended for nearly two decades, includes foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and
phytonutrients that support metabolic detoxification. This no-‐caloric-‐restriction eating plan
also eliminates potential food allergens that can trigger the production of unwanted
compounds that add to the body's environmental chemical burden.
