Medical Center Campus<br />
The <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> Medical Center main campus, encompassing nearly 24 acres, is located<br />
at the intersection of the city of Los Angeles and the cities of Beverly Hills and West<br />
Hollywood. The campus features the following: the North and South Towers, Barbara and<br />
Marvin Davis Research Building, Thalians Mental Health Center, Mark Goodson Building,<br />
Outpatient Services Building, Fashion Industries Guild Florence and “Duke” Becker<br />
Building, Steven Spielberg Pediatric Research Center, Suzanne and David Saperstein<br />

primary service area, comprising some 3.2<br />
million people, represents approximately 75<br />
percent of <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong>’s total inpatient<br />
discharges. In addition to the Los Angeles<br />
community, <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> offers comprehensive<br />

Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, one of the largest centers of<br />
its kind in Southern California, is staffed by more than 400 physicians and scientists who<br />
are dedicated to the treatment of adult and pediatric cancer patients. The institute<br />
comprises an integrated, multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, hematologists,<br />
surgical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists and psychiatrists, as<br />
well as other clinical support staff. The array of services includes specialty centers for<br />
brain, breast, colon/rectal, head and neck, kidney and bladder, lymphoma, leukemia, liver,<br />

excellence in patient care. <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> is currently conducting<br />
more than 600 research projects through the Burns and Allen<br />
Research Institute. These projects encompass basic,<br />
translational, clinical and health services research and cover the<br />
entire spectrum of disease investigation, including molecular<br />
genetics, biochemical analysis and disease-based areas such as<br />
cancer, cardiovascular and neurosciences.<br />
The Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics<br />
Research Institute is a state-of-the-art program that enhances<br />
<strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong>’s current strength in genetics, cell and molecular<br />
biology, cell signaling and immunology, and will generate direct<br />
patient care benefits. The EISNER Program for Cardiovascular<br />
Research at <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> integrates the imaging (EBT and<br />
nuclear cardiology), cardiac surgery, preventive cardiology and<br />
basic cardiology aspects of heart research.<br />
The Board of Governors Center for Cancer<br />
Research conducts advanced research into cancers of the<br />
lung, brain, prostate, pancreas, breast, vone and hematologic and<br />
gastrointestinal systems as well as melanoma and other forms of<br />
the disease. The center is the integral research arm of the<br />
Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.<br />
The Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute’s research<br />
teams are studying tumors from several perspectives. Currently<br />
their focus is on collecting new insights into the genetic,<br />
molecular and immune system mechanisms at work in brain<br />
tumor growth. The long-range target is prevention and correcting<br />
the conditions that enable cancer cells to grow. The Medical<br />
Genetics Institute is a world-renowned, multidisciplinary<br />
outpatient center that diagnoses, treats and manages hereditary<br />
disorders and birth defects affecting fetuses, newborns, children,<br />
adolescents and adults. The Women’s Cancer Research<br />
Institute is a multidisciplinary program supported by <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong><br />
Research for Women’s Cancers. Experts here foster<br />
collaborative research between scientists and physicians to bring<br />
the most innovative discoveries directly to women with breast<br />
and gynecologic cancers.<br />
The Winnick Family Clinical Research Center serves as<br />
a hub for all clinical research activity at <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong>. A primary<br />
component is the General Clinical Research Center, which is<br />
part of a nationwide network of 80 centers that receive funding<br />
from the National Institutes of Health to further clinical and<br />
translational research. The Winnick Family Clinical Research<br />
Center also supports training and mentoring programs, research<br />
awards and state-of-the-art laboratories and information systems.<br />
Extramural funding for the Burns and Allen Research Institute<br />
grew to $52 million in 2004 with 47% of this amount being<br />
awarded by the National Institutes of Health. <strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong><br />
scientists had 9 licensed technologies producing $18 million in<br />
royalties for 2004. Areas of research excellence include<br />
women’s cancers, prostate cancer, neurosciences, cardiology,<br />
oncology, medical genetics, gastroenterology, pulmonary<br />
medicine, diabetes, endocrinology, organ transplantation,<br />
women’s health, ophthalmology, nuclear imaging and health<br />

Health Professional<br />
Education<br />
<strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> has affiliation agreements with<br />
UCLA, CSU Los Angeles and multiple community<br />
colleges to provide on-site nursing and health<br />
professional education. The Medical Center also<br />
offers an on-site collaborative baccalaureate and<br />
master’s program in nursing with CSU Los<br />
Angeles. The student assistant program allows<br />
nursing students to gain work experience and<br />
increased clinical skills under the mentorship of<br />
<strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> nurses.<br />

<strong>Cedars</strong>-<strong>Sinai</strong> is a major teaching hospital affiliated<br />
with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.<br />

standard” in healthcare. The 2004 survey, conducted by the National Research Corporation (NRC),<br />
asked Los Angeles residents to name the hospital in the greater Los Angeles area that they rate the<br />
