About Cognac
Cognac is made from white wine from the Charente and
the Charente Maritime districts in the south-western parts of
France. This area is divided into six crus (zones).
Due to the variations in the nature of the soil, the different
crus produce wines of different qualities and characters.
Braastad Cognac is always made from our own newly
fermented white wine. We begin the distillation process at our
distillery on November 1st and it lasts until March 31st.
The newly distilled cognac is stored in oak casks and the ageing
process is essential to the final result. The finished product is
usually a blend of several different areas and vintages.
Braastad VS is our blend of specially selected cognacs,
mainly from the Fins Bois region. It includes cognacs
that have matured for between 2 and 4 years in
Limousine oak casks in our family’s cellars in Jarnac.
In 2007, Braastad VS received the Silver Medal in
the VS category at the International Wine and Spirit
Competition in London.
“Sverre Braastad was my
father, and he reached the age
of 100. I myself am 88.
Knowing how to age well is
what we make a living out of.”
Our Braastad VSOP is a blend of cognacs aged
between 4 and 8 years. The high average maturing
age of the eaux de vie included in the blend gives
this exquisite VSOP an opulent, harmonic flavour.
Braastad VSOP has received both the Gold
and Silver Medal at the VSOP category of
the Inter national Wine and Spirit Competition
in London.
Braastad XO Fine Champagne
The quality designation Fine Champagne requires
that at least half the cognac in the blend comes
from the Grande Champagne region and the rest
comes from the Petite Champagne region. This
special XO contains blends aged from 6 to 18 years.
Braastad XO has on three separate occasions
received the Silver Medal in the category
for XO Fine Champagne at The International
Wine and Spirit Competition in London
TASTING NOTE
This cognac has a complex nose of great fi nesse with
persistent aromas of dried fruits such as fi gs and apricots.
Its fl oral scent reveals a touch of rancio fl avour.
Braastad XO Superior
While creating Braastad XO Superior, we have
collected our finest cognacs from the Grande
and Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois
regions. Each of the cognacs selected has
matured for 8 to 50 years in our family’s cellars
by the banks of the river Charente.
Braastad XO Superior has, for three
consecutive years (2007, 2008 and 2009),
won the silver medal at The International
Wine and Spirit Competition in London.
TASTING NOTE
Our exquisite XO Superior reveals a distinctive nose with a touch
of dried fruits, followed by an aromatic complexity with a prevailing
scent of vanilla. The fi nish is elegant, the reward sublime.
“Sometimes I wonder
why we care so much.
Maybe because our
name is on the bottle?”
When creating Braastad Extra, I have collected
my family’s finest cognacs, hidden away by my
grandfather, my uncle and myself.
With blends aged between 18 and 150 years,
this well-matured cognac has primary notes
of dry apricots and ripe plums. Hints of walnut
and light spices give it great force and a
delicate finish with the flavour of rancio.
Braastad Extra represents the pinnacle of
our blending tradition, a testimony to age
– and the flagship of our Cognac house.
TASTING NOTE
Braastad Extra is powerful and complex, full-bodied and
long lasting on the palate.
Braastad Château de Triac
Strict rules apply when it comes to allowing a cognac to
be called Château. All grapes included in the production of
a Château Cognac have to be picked from vines belonging
to the Château’s own vineyards. A Château Cognac will,
therefore, always be produced in limited amounts.
All the cognac in this blend comes from the vine yards
around our family’s castle. The blend has matured in very
old oak casks, mostly from the Tronçais forest, for about
half a century. When a cognac becomes this old, it will
develop a relatively marked cask bouquet known as ’rancio’.
TASTING NOTE
This is a very sophisticated cognac. It has a developed, complex nose
of great fi nesse with the persistent aroma of baked apple. It also provides
a complex and harmonic aftertaste, followed by notes of vanilla.
Continuing a proud tradition
Today Braastad Cognac is run by my brother Antoine,
my cousin Jan and myself. Cognac is a proud tradition and
we prefer to run things in the traditional manner.
We grow our own grapes, produce wine and distil our own
cognac. And in our dark, damp warehouse by the river Charente,
thousands upon thousands of casks are maturing, many of them
casked by my grandfather Sverre Braastad himself.
