Viewed individually, CB traces tend to be straight (planar) at the scale of centimeters to meters and, where visible from tip to tip, reveal extremely eccentric ellipsoidal thickness profiles with aspect ratios of approximately 10 -4 (Figure 4.5). However, bands are also commonly observed to curve, kink, zig-zag, meander and veer toward (or away) from each other, while two or more bands will frequently overlap and run parallel to each other in close (mm) proximity for meters to tens of meters (Figure 4.6). Separate CB traces do sometimes merge at oblique intersections into what appears in outcrop to be a single band, but we rarely observe two CBs crossing each other except at high angle (>80°), usually as part of a checkerboard pattern. Noteworthy, because of analogous patterns documented for joint sets, is the ubiquitous presence of hooking-type interactions, where adjacent bands spaced up to tens of centimeters curve sharply toward each other. These can involve two curving tips or one curving and one straight tip, as well as completely closed eye-shaped structures within a through-going band. Straight tips are also observed in echelon configurations (Figure 4.7). 3.2 Petrographic observations Viewed in thin section, a representative planar segment of the fins that define CBs in Aztec outcrops is clearly delineated by an abrupt decrease in porosity, which is directly attributable to inelastic mechanical compaction associated with micro-fracture accommodated plasticity of the quartz grains. The total volume change realized, as measured by the relative volume fraction occupied by detrital grains inside versus outside the band, is about 10% and appears to be consistent along the bands from tip to middle. Judging from the overall continuity of depositional bedding cutting across the bands, and the almost complete absence of granular disaggregation within them (despite intense grain fracturing), the volume change appears to have resulted from uniaxial compaction directed normal to the plane of the band in the absence of appreciable shear accommodated across it (Figure 4.8). Notably lacking, or at least not yet detected by the petrographic analyses performed to date, is any halo of incipient grain damage and/or porosity loss around the elliptically tapered band tip, as might be expected in analogy with veins, dikes, pressure solution surfaces and faults, which typically exhibit a process zone of transitional deformation grading into the undamaged host material (e.g. Delaney et al., 1986; Hoagland et al., 92
