United Nations Environment Program. Division <strong>of</strong> Global Environment Facility Coordination (UNEP/GEF) Nairobi<br />

KENYA. Program Officer, 2005 - 2008.<br />

Responsible for developing a GLOBAL portfolio <strong>of</strong> biodiversity projects eligible for $1 million from the GEF, with a focus<br />

on conservation finance. This included 1. identifying potential proponents and new project ideas; 2. briefing potential<br />

proponents on the GEF project cycle and requirements; 3. helping project proponents with document drafting to ensure<br />

high quality proposals with strong country endorsement; 4. providing technical guidance to proponents on project design;<br />

5. backstopping proponents in the implementation <strong>of</strong> already approved Project Development Applications to ensure<br />

timely delivery <strong>of</strong> project briefs for submission to the GEF; 6. building meaningful working relations with NGOs,<br />

government agencies, and other proponents.<br />

Managed a $2 million GEF project: “Strengthening the Network <strong>of</strong> Training Centers for Protected Area Management<br />

through Demonstration <strong>of</strong> a Tested Approach” in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. Responsibilities included:<br />

reviewing project work plans and budgets; ensuring financial reporting is accurate, on time and following UNEP/GEF<br />

standards; ensuring project activities are progressing according to workplans and, if not, taking immediate action to<br />

address underperformance; appointing a Project Steering Committee (PSC); drafting Terms <strong>of</strong> Reference for the PSC;<br />

reviewing all preparatory documents for PSC meetings and attending annual PSC meetings.<br />

Provided inputs to UNEP’s and the GEF’s ecosystem services strategies, and UNEP/GEF’s biodiversity strategy. Crafted<br />

UNEP/GEF’s conservation finance guidelines.<br />

Led an assessment <strong>of</strong> WWF’s Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania country programs, including conservation challenges<br />
