A Tisket a Tasket<br />

Put a few balls in a laundry basket, a clean waste basket, or a large box.<br />

Help the children dump the balls out of the basket on the floor (or grass) nearby.<br />

Show them how to stand next to the basket and toss a ball inside.<br />

When they are ready, see if the children can stand a short distance away and<br />

throw the balls in the basket. Encourage them for trying even if the balls do<br />

not go in.<br />

Special Needs Tip<br />

Help a child with difficulty standing do this activity while sitting.<br />

Shoebox Choo-Choo<br />

Collect several shoeboxes and tie them together by punching a hole in each<br />

end and tying short pieces of string through. Tie a long piece (about 12 inches)<br />

through the hole at the end of the shoebox that will be the “engine.” Wrap tape<br />

around the end of the string to make it easier to hold.<br />

Encourage the children to put toys in the boxes.<br />

Let them pull the train around the room. You <strong>may</strong> want to make several of these<br />

if the children enjoy them!<br />

A variation of this activity is to use egg cartons, cut in half, in place of the shoeboxes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> children will enjoy putting things in the egg cups!<br />

Special Needs Tip<br />

Invite children who are not walking yet to crawl behind and be<br />

the caboose!<br />

Make Motions to Music<br />

Turn on music and gather some of the children together. Find children’s<br />

music with a good beat such as music by Ella Jenkins, Greg and Steve,<strong>The</strong><br />

Laurie Berkner Band, and Putu<strong>may</strong>o Kids.<br />

Demonstrate a few different motions, and encourage the children to copy them.<br />

For example, while standing, clap your hands, then change the motion and step<br />

high to march in place. Repeat or add new motions if the children are following.<br />

For older one year olds, stop the music occasionally and “freeze,” then start the<br />

music again and continue.
