A Familiar Face<br />

Place an infant in your lap facing you. Hold him firmly in your arms.<br />

Lean over and gently lift the infant closer so you are face to face.<br />

If the baby is beginning to pull up using his legs, lift him slowly holding his hands.<br />

Each time you move the baby toward you, make eye contact.<br />

Use a gentle voice and say for example, “Hello, Paulo! It is Miss Vicky. Can you<br />

see my eyes looking at you? Do you see my lips smiling at you? I am so happy to<br />

see you today!”<br />

Give the baby plenty of time to look closely at your face as you talk to him.<br />

If the baby reaches up to your face, hair or glasses, give a big smile and say, “Yes,<br />

it is Miss Vicky! You can see my eyes, and I can see you!”<br />

This works best with a familiar teacher. For a child who is new to your classroom,<br />

wait until he is familiar with you before getting up close.<br />

Come To Me!<br />

For creeping and crawling infants, place the infant on the floor.<br />

Move to another part of the floor behind the infant.<br />

Call the infant’s name.<br />

When she turns her body around to see you, hold your arms open wide.<br />

Say with an eager expression, “Come to me!”<br />

Use your voice and facial expression to encourage the infant to crawl<br />

toward you.<br />

When she reaches you, pick her up and give her a big hug!<br />

Special Needs Tip<br />

For a child who cannot crawl to you, sit her in your lap side ways<br />

and say her name. When she turns to look at your face, make<br />

eye contact and give her a hug!<br />
