Mail Box<br />

Prepare a set of envelopes with the first names of all the children in your class.<br />

Put the envelopes in a bag and write U.S. Mail on it.<br />

Wear a hat similar to what a mail carrier would wear.<br />

Gather the children and pull an envelope out of the bag and read the first name,<br />

Noah, for example. Explain that you’re not sure who it should go to because<br />

there’s someone named Noah in this class but you know another person named<br />

Noah, too. Ask the children how you can be sure that the right person gets it.<br />

Discuss last names.<br />

Write Noah’s last name on the envelope.<br />

Repeat this exercise by writing the last names of the rest of the children on their<br />

envelope.<br />

Invite the children to draw a picture to put in their envelope to take home at the<br />

end of the day.<br />

Check licensing standards to be sure your classroom meets all safety<br />

requirements.<br />

Get on the floor and look around your room from the “point of view” of your<br />

three year olds. You <strong>may</strong> be surprised to see what the room looks like to them.<br />

Do you need to rearrange some things to make your learning environment<br />

appealing and safe at the same time?<br />

On different days, invite a fire fighter or police officer to visit the class and talk<br />

about fire and personal safety.<br />

Read a book such as I Can Be Safe by Pat Thomas and discuss safety issues with<br />

the children.<br />

Put sweaters, jackets, and rain wear in the Dramatic Play Center and talk about<br />

wearing different kinds of clothing when it is cold, hot, or rainy outside.<br />

Take a pitcher of water to the playground and encourage children to come for<br />

a drink when they are thirsty. Invite them to help pour from the pitcher or hold<br />

the cup as you pour.<br />

Invite the Center’s cook, a nutritionist, or a nurse to your class to talk about the<br />

importance of eating healthy foods.<br />

Whenever possible, review and practice safety rules. Compliment children who<br />

remind each other about being safe.<br />

Ask parents to make healthy choices when they bring food to the classroom.
