Check licensing standards to be sure your classroom meets all safety<br />

requirements.<br />

Read a book such as Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert to teacher children<br />

the names of different foods. Talk about eating healthy foods and then enjoy<br />

eating some together!<br />

Get on the floor and look around your room from the “point of view” of your<br />

two year olds.You <strong>may</strong> be surprised to see what the room looks like. Do you<br />

need to rearrange some things to make your learning environment appealing<br />

and safe at the same time?<br />

Serve healthy foods at mealtime. Include protein (meat and cheese, for example),<br />

green vegetables, and fruit.<br />

Put sweaters,jackets,and rain wear in the Dramatic Play Center and talk about<br />

wearing different kinds of clothing when it is cold, hot, or rainy outside.<br />

Offer water to the children throughout the day. Take a pitcher to the playground<br />

and encourage children to come for a drink when they are thirsty.<br />

Invite them to hold the cup as you pour the water.<br />

Talk about and practice safety rules often. Compliment children who remind<br />

each other about being safe.<br />

If parents send or bring food to the classroom,encourage them to make healthy<br />

choices. Fruit is a better snack choice than cookies or cake, for example.<br />

Encourage teachers to check out Healthyeatingforlife.org for more nutrition<br />

education activities to do with children.<br />

Suggest they check out the nutrition education kit at their local Child Care<br />

Resource Referral office.
