Where Did it Go?<br />

Get three empty square tissue boxes.<br />

Cut out the open end of each box so that a small stuffed toy could fit<br />

underneath.<br />

Sit with the child and show him the small toy.<br />

Tell him that you are going to hide the toy for him to find.<br />

Put the toy under one of the boxes.<br />

Shuffle the boxes around.<br />

Ask the child, “Can you find the toy?”<br />

Observe to see if the child lifts each box until he finds the toy.<br />

Repeat this game as long as the child enjoys the hide and seek.<br />

Special Needs Tip<br />

For a child with a developmental delay, turn the boxes with the<br />

open end up. Have him “find” the toy IN the box and take the<br />

toy OUT of the box.<br />

One year olds still explore objects by putting them into their mouths. Infant<br />

and toddler toys are best because they are non-toxic and do not have small<br />

parts like wheels that could break off.<br />

Rotate the play materials in your classroom. Put out something new every<br />

couple of days to spark curiosity and interest. Do not put too much out at<br />

once or children can become over-stimulated.<br />

Your toddlers <strong>may</strong> want you to read the same story or sing the same song<br />

over again. That is okay. This repetition will help them learn and make it easier<br />

for them to join in.<br />

Look for ways your children are showing inventiveness and flexibility. For<br />

example, using sticks when the shovels are gone or moving a box to step<br />

up to the sink. <strong>The</strong>se are signs that they are developing important skills for<br />

learning how to solve problems.<br />
