Shape Sorter<br />

Sit with a child who is playing with a shape sorter.<br />

Say to the child “Let’s see where this shape fits,” each time the child tries to<br />

fit a shape into the shape sorter.<br />

If the shape does not fit in the hole say, “Let’s try another shape.”<br />

Point or turn the sorter to the space where the shape will fit, if the child<br />

becomes frustrated.<br />

When the child fits the shape into the correct space say, “You did it! You found<br />

the right shape. Now try the next one.”<br />

Encourage the child to put each shape into the sorter.<br />

Say to the child, “Good work, you found the place for each shape.”<br />

Portrait Puzzles<br />

Take a photo of each child in your group.<br />

Special Needs Tip<br />

Children with developmental delays or limited manual dexterity<br />

<strong>may</strong> only be able to sort one or two shapes. Start with the<br />

circle since it is the easiest. Praise all attempts to work at the<br />

sorting task.<br />

Print out one copy—black and white photos are fine.<br />

Laminate each photo and glue to a piece of cardboard.<br />

Cut the board in half for a two-piece puzzle.<br />

Sit with the child and her portrait puzzle turned face down.<br />

Invite her to turn over one piece. Ask her, “Who is this? Let’s find out. Can you<br />

turn over the other piece?”<br />

Encourage her to turn over the other piece and fit the two together.<br />

Clap your hands and say, “Look, it’s you!”
