Self-awareness<br />

Mirror Image<br />

Sit in front of a large mirror with one or two children.<br />

Make silly faces and encourage the children to do the same.<br />

Move your arms, shake your head, and do other movements for the children to<br />

imitate.<br />

Point to body parts and name a few.<br />

Throughout, say the children’s names and point to what they are doing in the<br />

mirror. “Irene is waving her arms!” See if the children will point to themselves in<br />

the mirror when you ask “Where is Pepi?”<br />

Language Tip<br />

Learn to name a few body parts in the home language of the<br />

children. Use these words when you can ask them to point in<br />

the mirror.<br />

Pick and Choose<br />

Tape a large piece of butcher paper to a table and then tape individual pieces of<br />

drawing paper to it.<br />

Cut sponges into pieces that are easy for your one year olds to hold and dampen<br />

them. You will also need some two-inch paint brushes, paint shirts, and paper<br />

towels for clean up.<br />

Put a small amount of washable paint on paper plates. One color is all you need.<br />

With one or two children at a time, show them how to dip the sponge in the<br />

paint to make prints and how to use the paint brush.<br />

Let each child choose a sponge or a brush to start with. Let them have a chance<br />

to try both if they want to. Assist as needed.<br />

Write each child’s name on their work, put the pictures somewhere to dry and<br />

hang them at the children’s eye level for all to admire!<br />

Some children will prefer to use the sponge only, others will prefer the brush,<br />

and others will enjoy both!
