Big Doll, Little Doll<br />

Organize some baskets of “big” and “little” toys that relate to one another. For<br />

example, one basket could have a big doll and a little one, or big and little baby<br />

bottles. Another could have big and little sizes of plastic animals. An outdoor<br />

basket could have both sizes of buckets, shovels, or sifters.<br />

Talk about “big” and “little” as your child plays with the toys in each basket.<br />

“Catherine, you’re playing with the big chicken. Do you see the little chicken?”<br />

Put the two items side by side to show the difference.<br />

To reinforce “big” and “little” some more, show your child how to stand very tall<br />

with her hands over her head to show how “big” she is. Then squat down very<br />

low to make herself “little.”<br />

Talk about “big” and “little” throughout your day.<br />

Photo Match<br />

Take three photographs of your child doing something different in each one.<br />

Make double prints of each photograph.<br />

Glue each picture onto a piece of cardboard that is larger than the photo. Cover<br />

each one with clear contact paper to make picture cards.<br />

One at a time, show your child one of the pictures and help her find the other<br />

one that matches it. “Eva, look at the picture of you playing with the big truck.<br />

Let’s find another picture of Eva playing with the truck.”<br />

Put the picture cards in a basket for your child to play with later.<br />

When your child is ready for a challenge, take a similar set of photos of another<br />

family member and make more matching cards to add to the others.<br />

Sorting Spoons<br />

Set out a pile of about 10 pieces of silverware including several spoons that are<br />

exactly the same.<br />

Show your child one spoon and ask him to find another one just like it.<br />

When he finds one, let him put it in a plastic cup. Continue until he “sorts” all<br />

the spoons.<br />

If your child enjoys this activity, let him help sort the spoons again when you are<br />

putting away clean silverware. Move on to forks next!<br />
