Global Omani of the Year
Award for Dr Barwani
MUSCAT — Dr Mohammed
al Barwani, Chairman of MB
Holding group of companies,
received the AIWA Global
Omani of the Year Award at the
AIWA awards for excellence
held at Shangri-la’s Barr al
Jissah Spa and Resort recently.
The Award was presented
by His Highness Sayyid Tarik
bin Shabib al Said, Director of
the Renaissance Group.
MB Holding group of companies
was founded in 1982 by
Dr Al Barwani in Muscat. The
group who entered their 30th
year of operations in 2011 is
now a successful multinational
group of companies with businesses
across drilling and oil
field services, exploration and
production, mining & minerals,
investments, manufacturing
and trading. It employs
more 6.500 employees across
more than 20 countries uniquely
creating an Omani multinational
group excelling across
the globe.
Dr Al Barwani, in his journey
towards success, has done
very little by the book. In a
surprising move, after studying
microbiology, he opted for
a job with Petroleum Development
Oman in 1976 and when
everything was going smoothly
for him, he opted out of the
secure job at PDO in 1986 to
run his own business on a full
time basis. Another example of
doing things differently is his
passion to develop and nurture
local talent in every country
of operation. Across the MB
group he has laid emphasis on
localisation across the more
than 20 countries the group is
present in.
Unlike many Omani companies
that have been content
with operations in the Sultanate
alone, he went out of Oman
to enter uncharted territories
despite the threat of cut-throat
competition. Though he faltered
at times, today he stands
tall as the proud chairman of
MB Holding Company LLC
that has interests primarily in
the oil & gas and mining besides
investments in companies
engaged in different industry
segments in Oman and abroad.
On receiving the Award
Dr Al Barwani mentioned:
“Receiving this Award is both
a privilege and an honour. It
reaffirms the conviction I had
in myself 30 years ago, when I
took the decision to branch out
on my own. My heart brims
with pride when our group of
companies crosses even the
smallest of milestones internationally,
because then not
only do I feel like a good businessman,
but importantly also
stand as a good ambassador of
my country. I would surely like
to build the MB Group further
towards a wider global presence
growing in every market
and developing our nation’s
economy.”
Dr Al Barwani who holds a
master’s degree in Petroleum
engineering, has also recently
been conferred an honorary
doctorate by the Herriot Watt
University, UK. The 4 main
companies under the MB
Holding umbrella are MB Petroleum
Services (Drilling and
Oilfield services), Petrogas
(Exploration & Production),
Mawarid Mining (Mining &
Exploration) and United Engineering
Services (Manufacturing
and Trading).
Nawras support for Summer
Sailing School successful
MUSCAT — Nawras, Oman’s
customer friendly communications
provider, has successfully
supported Oman Sail’s
Summer Sailing School which
offered 200 boys and girls between
the ages of 8 and 16 the
chance to learn about sailing
while picking up some useful
life skills along the way.
Held at Marina Bandar al
Rowdha, the school ran on a
weekly basis throughout July,
hosting 50 participants every
week.
Oman Sail’s Summer Sailing
School taught students
about each and every element
of a boat from bow to stern.
While onshore, the groups
learnt about teamwork, leadership,
solving problems and
knots skills. When a lack of
wind prevented sailing, the
students were introduced to
other water sport activities
such as kayaking and swimming
and they took part in
educational competitions onshore.
Students also had an opportunity
to visit the Jewel of
Muscat Museum with Saleh
al Jabri, the skipper of Oman
Sail's Jewel of Muscat, who
distributed certificates to all
participants at the end of their
weeklong course.
Summer is the time of year
when young Omanis are offered
the chance to get away
from the heat and onto the water
with Oman Sail Schools.
Not only did this year’s activities
provide a fun and healthy
way for the participants to
learn a new sport and make
new friends but it also provided
a very natural way for them
to gain important life-skills
such as teamwork, leadership
and problem solving.
As part of the sponsorship,
Nawras provided all the
students with shirts, caps and
bags during the programme.
Nawras, a member of Qtel
Group, is dedicated to operating
its business in a socially responsible
manner by being an
integral member of the Omani
society. Nawras seeks to offer
support by assisting voluntary
organisations as well as central
and regional government
with a variety of social development
activities.
NICOSIA — Standard &
Poor's said it lowered its
credit rating on the long-term
sovereign credit of Cyprus
to BBB+ from A- and affirmed
the short-term A-2
rating, based on concern over
the country's economy and
budget.
It said the outlook for the
ratings remains negative.
The move comes two days
after Moody's Investors Service
cut its rating on Cypriot
sovereign debt and a day after
it lowered the ratings on two
of the island's major commercial
lenders — Marfin Popular
Bank and Bank of Cyprus.
The latest negative outlook
follows the resignation
AIDA President visits A’Saffa Foods
ONE of the region’s most influential bodies on agricultural development and
investment has made a fact finding trip to the chicken farms of A’Saffa Foods at
Thumrait in Southern Oman, as part of its official inspection visit to company
farms in Thumrait
Ali Al Sharan, President, Arab Investment and Development Authority
(AIDA) was a guest of Oman’s leading poultry producer when he toured the
company’s world class state-of-the-art chicken producing facility that covers a
50-acre site and comprises nine separate farms.
His visit came at the personal invitation of A’Saffa Foods Chairman Saleh al
Shanfari and he toured every facet of the complex. This included the farm buildings
where the chickens are bred on a carefully prepared diet of natural feed and
water to the processing facility where the company produces their wide range of
frozen and fresh chicken products for domestic and international markets.
He was also a guest of A’Saffa Foods at the Khareef Festival where the company
ensured that festival goers are able to enjoy tasty chicken snacks at a restaurant
outlet for only 100 baisas.
Commenting on his visit, the President said: “I have been tremendously impressed
by the technology and advanced nature of the machinery and processes
that A’Saffa uses at its farms that can match those of any modern poultry farming
facility in the world.
“As an investor in the company, the Arab Investment and Development Agricultural
Authority is keen to make periodic visits to A’Saffa to see the tremendous
progress and growth the company has taken as it becomes not only the major
poultry producer in Oman but a centre of excellence for chicken production
in the wider region.”
Senior A’Saffa Foods officials accompanied the president on his tour of the
facilities where he was able to look at the steps being made to increase production
as demand for the company’s tasty, nutritious, protein packed and 100 per
cent Halal chicken products continues to grow in Oman and internationally.
Sidhartha Lenka, Head, Sales and Marketing, A’Saffa Foods added: “We were
delighted to host this visit that gave us the opportunity to demonstrate to one of
our shareholders and an influential agricultural organisation the quality of our
production facilities and the professionalism of our staff and team who work at
the farms in Thumrait.
A’Saffa Foods is Oman’s leading poultry producer with its great tasting and
high quality range of frozen and fresh 100 per cent Halal products comprising
over 25 per cent of the market. The company has also recently broadened its
scope into non poultry products with the introduction of “Khayrat” brand and a
range of tasty Halal beef burger products.
The company has recently announced plans to expand its operations into new
areas of operations including the development of a new meat processing plant
and the creation of a table egg business.
In 2010 the company marked its change of name from A’Saffa Poultry to
A’Saffa Foods with the introduction of the Khayrat brand which has launched a
new range of beef burgers and frozen vegetables.
