The Lindsay Chemical Co. supplied <strong>the</strong> following<br />

analysis of <strong>the</strong> Code 920 rare-earth oxides used in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fabrication of <strong>the</strong> compacts:<br />

Samarium oxide 45.0-49.5%<br />

Gadolinium oxide 22 S-2 7%<br />

Neodymium oxide 0.9-4.5%<br />

Praseodymium oxide 0.9-3.6%<br />

Cerium oxide 0-0.9%<br />

Examinations of fluoride fuel samples with <strong>the</strong><br />

petrographic microscope were performed at a rate<br />

of about 200 samples per month. The materials<br />

examined included quenched samples for equi-<br />

librium-diagram determinations, control samples<br />

from experimental runs, and samples from pro-<br />

duction batches. The results of <strong>the</strong>se exami-<br />

nations are reported in Part 2, “Chemistry.”<br />
