torch gas was used to supply backup gas and weld
coverage.
A Ifi-in.-long tack weld was placed at each end
of the root gap, and two more \-in.-long tack
welds were equally placed along the root gap,
The clamps were removed after the tack welds
were made, and the spacers were driven out.
Shrinkage measurements were taken, and the plates
were again fastened to the flat base. The root
pass was applied after the tack welds had been
wire brushed and the edges had been feathered.
Measurements of the root pass shrinkage were
then to ken.
The plates were then assembled in the vertical
welding iig as shown in Fig. 3.4.14. The re-
maining five weld passes per plate were deposited
in accordance with the sequence shown. The
completed weldment is shown in the vertical iig
in Fig, 3.4.15. Dial-gage readings were taken
at 1-min intervals during the deposition of the
