torch gas was used to supply backup gas and weld<br />

coverage.<br />

A Ifi-in.-long tack weld was placed at each end<br />

of <strong>the</strong> root gap, and two more \-in.-long tack<br />

welds were equally placed along <strong>the</strong> root gap,<br />

The clamps were removed after <strong>the</strong> tack welds<br />

were made, and <strong>the</strong> spacers were driven out.<br />

Shrinkage measurements were taken, and <strong>the</strong> plates<br />

were again fastened to <strong>the</strong> flat base. The root<br />

pass was applied after <strong>the</strong> tack welds had been<br />

wire brushed and <strong>the</strong> edges had been fea<strong>the</strong>red.<br />

Measurements of <strong>the</strong> root pass shrinkage were<br />

<strong>the</strong>n to ken.<br />

The plates were <strong>the</strong>n assembled in <strong>the</strong> vertical<br />

welding iig as shown in Fig. 3.4.14. The re-<br />

maining five weld passes per plate were deposited<br />

in accordance with <strong>the</strong> sequence shown. The<br />

completed weldment is shown in <strong>the</strong> vertical iig<br />

in Fig, 3.4.15. Dial-gage readings were taken<br />

at 1-min intervals during <strong>the</strong> deposition of <strong>the</strong><br />
