ver. 3
Centralized Backup and Disaster Recovery for virtual and physical environments
Tight Integration with hypervisors for agentless backups, VM replication and
seamless restores
Paragon Protect & Restore is an innovative and comprehensive
backup and disaster recovery solutions, as it combines
backup and recovery for virtual servers and workstations as
well as well as physical servers and workstations in a single
product, offering protection for an organization’s entire IT
infrastructure. Its transparent backup administration stores
backups according to company requirements and archives
them in second-tier storages or in the cloud. The administrator
uses a central management console and policies to manage
all backups as well as their storage and archiving.
True distributed/role-based architecture
Distribute the individual functions of Paragon Protect & Restore
to the places within your network which make the most
sense. Separating the program modules and installing them
on different devices within the network relieves the burden on
individual servers and shortens the paths between the computers
that are being backed up and the backup storage.
Make backups and replicas with a single product
Paragon Protect & Restore supports many different backup
and restore scenarios, including backup of physical servers
and workstations, agentless backup of ESX clients, and ESX
replications, and, of course, both file-based and sector-based
backups are supported. All of the above tasks can be scheduled
and managed from the same centralized console. All
backup and retention policies are conffigured, monitored and
executed within a single program interface. This makes it unnecessary
to install agents for ESX clients for either backups
or restores.
Protect & Restore Server
The Protect & Restore Server consists of an Administration and
an Installation Server
Administration server:
This is the main service within the architecture, where resource
distribution is managed and the backup policies are configured
and monitored.
Installation server:
This service is in charge of monitoring and executing the deployment
of product components, agents and server applications.
The installation server also handles product updates
and updates to the Protect & Restore database.
Protect & Restore ESX Bridge
The ESX Bridge is used for communication with the VMware
infrastructure.

Protect & Restore Backup Server
The Backup Server is installed in a strategic location as an additional
module. Once it’s been launched, it connects with the
Protect & Restore Server and monitors storages of all replications
and backups, as well as all retention policies.
Protect & Restore Console
The Protect & Restore Console is the product’s main user interface
and provides access to all control functions. It also indicates
the status of the system as well as the backups and replications
in easy-to-read views. The console can be conveniently
accessed from any machine within the network.
Perpetual License incl. 1 year Maintenance
(Upgrade Assurance & Extended Support)
Virtual Machines Edition will be licensed and priced on a per
socket (occupied socket) basis (the number of hosts or virtual
machines does not matter). The number of cores is not being
taken into consideration.
Example: A company is running 12 virtual servers on 3 hosts,
with 4 servers per host. 1 of the hosts is running on a 2 socket
board (both sockets occupied), while the other 2 are running
on 1 socket each. This company would obtain a license for 4
sockets, which will license all 3 hosts regardless of the number
of virtual machines on each host. This gives the user a great
deal of flexibility, as he can “move” VMs from one host to the
other, or spin up or take down VMs without having to update
his license.
• Distributed architecture for high performance and optimal
resource efficiency
• Quick disaster recovery thanks to replications of virtual
machines and extremely fast system image restoration
• Near CDP possible based on fast incrementals and powerful
scheduling options
• System migration between ESX storages and to new
hardware
• Supports second-tier and cloud storage, and easy management
of multiple retention policies thanks to a dedicated
backup server
• Paragon ProTran directs the network traffic and relieves
the burden on TCP/IP connections
• Real-time statistics and reports at a single glance in the
console or via E-mail

System Requirements
Hypervisors
Protect & Restore can back up, replicate and recover virtual
machines running on:
• VMware vSphere 5.1, 5.0, 4.1, and 4.0
• VMware ESX and VMware ESXi 4.x and 5.x (including agentbased
backup of guests on free ESX versions)
Please note virtual machines can run any guest operating
system supported by VMware vSphere.
Product deployment
Administration Server, Protect & Restore Backup Server,
Protect & Restore ESX Bridge, Agents and Protect & Restore
Consoles have similar software and hardware requirements.
OS and software requirements:
• Microsoft Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows
8, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008,
Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012
• An Active Directory domain environment
