CONFERENCE PROGRAM Conference Strands and Student Poster Sessions Strand #1: Preparing the next generation of educators Perhaps the most widely recognized function of PDSs is in the area of preparing teacher candidates for the profession. These unique school-university collaborations go well beyond the traditional “student teaching” experience by designing unique and innovative ways of working with teacher candidates and fully integrating them into the P-12 school community. Proposals submitted for this strand address the practical strategies that PDS relationships have developed to enhance the learning experiences of teacher candidates. Strand #2: Providing professional development to sustain current educators In addition to preparing new educators, PDSs also help sustain the profession by providing a venue for professional development of educators, both P-12 and college/university, already in the field. Proposals submitted for this strand address how the community of learners in PDSs identify their professional needs and work collaboratively to design professional development experiences to meet those needs. Strand #3: Engaging in collaborative inquiry designed to further the profession One of the most unique contributions of PDS relationships is the recognition of the importance of reflecting upon and refining the things we do as educators that enhance the learning not only of P-12 students and teacher candidates but also the entire educational community. Proposals submitted for this strand address specific ways that PDS communities have routinely engaged in collaborative research and/or inquiry designed to strengthen the work of the relationship. Strand #4: Making a positive difference in the learning of P-12 students and in the lives of all stakeholders in the educational community The question invariably, and appropriately, asked of educators engaged in PDS work is, “What difference has engaging in a PDS model made in the academic achievement of your P-12 students?” Beyond the limited scope of this “show me the student achievement data” question lies a broader inquiry: “What difference has engaging in a PDS model made in the lives of anyone and everyone in your educational community?” Proposals submitted for this strand focus on the quantitative and/or qualitative impact of the PDS initiative. Student Poster Sessions For the sixth year in a row, teacher candidates have been given the opportunity to share their perspectives on their work in Professional Development Schools. The 30 presentations will be held in one 2-hour Saturday session during which teacher candidates will offer visual demonstrations of their work in PDS settings. Conference participants will have the opportunity to walk throughout the room and engage teacher candidates in conversations about their work. Special Program Note: The notations in this program indicating, for example, “Strand 3 Page 55” mean that you will find a detailed description of that session (which addresses Conference Strand #3) on page 55 of the Conference Proceedings.
