CONFERENCE PROGRAM<br />

On behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> Carolina and the National<br />

Association for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Schools, we welcome<br />

you to New Orleans and to our fourteenth consecutive celebration<br />

<strong>of</strong> the achievements and ongoing efforts <strong>of</strong> individuals and<br />

groups committed to PDS collaboration. We are very pleased<br />

that 1,000 PDS educators have chosen to participate in this year’s<br />

event. In four days together, you will have the opportunity to<br />

choose from 332 concurrent sessions and to interact with educators<br />

from across the world. You also can participate in a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> special events, including Wednesday’s New Orleans Cemetery<br />

History Tour, Thursday’s pre-<strong>conference</strong> workshops and<br />

facilitated discussions, Friday conversations for PDS directors<br />

and representatives from large institutions <strong>of</strong> higher education,<br />

and, for the sixth consecutive year, the increasingly popular Saturday<br />

morning Student Poster Sessions. Our general session presentations<br />

include Matt Seimears’ Thursday afternoon overview<br />

<strong>of</strong> PDSs in the Digital Age, Alfie Kohn’s Friday morning look at<br />

“The (Progressive) Schools our Children Deserve,” and Cynthia<br />

Lowen’s Saturday morning story <strong>of</strong> the making <strong>of</strong> the criticallyacclaimed<br />

film Bully. We encourage you to actively engage in<br />

every aspect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>conference</strong> and to use what you learn as a<br />

springboard for continuous PDS dialogue as you leave New Orleans<br />

and return to your various school sites.<br />

Recognizing the need for a bit <strong>of</strong> rest and relaxation in the middle<br />

<strong>of</strong> such intellectual stimulation, we have built into the <strong>conference</strong><br />

a few social events aimed at helping you renew old acquaintances,<br />

meet new friends, and continue your conversations<br />

away from the bustle <strong>of</strong> the sessions. These include, in addition<br />

to Wednesday’s Cemetery Tour, a Thursday evening Meet and<br />

Greet Reception and a Friday evening Gala Reception. Of course,<br />

you can also take advantage <strong>of</strong> your time in New Orleans to<br />

informally pick each other’s brains about your work in Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Development Schools.<br />

The <strong>conference</strong> will conclude with the NAPDS business meeting<br />

on Sunday morning, which will include a discussion and<br />

vote on the NAPDS’s revised by-laws. We encourage you to<br />

participate in this conversation and to share your ideas and suggestions<br />

for how the organization can best serve your needs.<br />

As always, the Conference Planning Committee appreciates<br />

Conference Strands and Student Poster Sessions<br />

Strand #1: Preparing the next generation <strong>of</strong> educators<br />

Perhaps the most widely recognized function <strong>of</strong> PDSs is in<br />

the area <strong>of</strong> preparing teacher candidates for the pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

These unique school-university collaborations go well beyond<br />

the traditional “student teaching” experience by designing<br />

unique and innovative ways <strong>of</strong> working with teacher<br />

candidates and fully integrating them into the P-12<br />

school community. Proposals submitted for this strand<br />

address the practical strategies that PDS relationships<br />

have developed to enhance the learning experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

teacher candidates.<br />

Strand #2: Providing pr<strong>of</strong>essional development to sustain<br />

current educators<br />

In addition to preparing new educators, PDSs also help<br />

sustain the pr<strong>of</strong>ession by providing a venue for pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

development <strong>of</strong> educators, both P-12 and college/university,<br />

already in the field. Proposals submitted for this<br />

strand address how the community <strong>of</strong> learners in PDSs<br />

identify their pr<strong>of</strong>essional needs and work collaboratively<br />

to design pr<strong>of</strong>essional development experiences to meet<br />

those needs.<br />

Strand #3: Engaging in collaborative inquiry designed<br />

to further the pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the most unique contributions <strong>of</strong> PDS relationships<br />

is the recognition <strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> reflecting upon and<br />

refining the things we do as educators that enhance the<br />

learning not only <strong>of</strong> P-12 students and teacher candidates<br />

but also the entire educational community. Proposals submitted<br />

for this strand address specific ways that PDS<br />

communities have routinely engaged in collaborative research<br />

and/or inquiry designed to strengthen the work <strong>of</strong><br />

the relationship.<br />

Strand #4: Making a positive difference in the learning<br />

<strong>of</strong> P-12 students and in the lives <strong>of</strong> all stakeholders in<br />

the educational community<br />

The question invariably, and appropriately, asked <strong>of</strong> educators<br />

engaged in PDS work is, “What difference has engaging<br />

in a PDS model made in the academic achievement <strong>of</strong><br />

your P-12 students?” Beyond the limited scope <strong>of</strong> this<br />

“show me the student achievement data” question lies a<br />

broader inquiry: “What difference has engaging in a PDS<br />

model made in the lives <strong>of</strong> anyone and everyone in your<br />

educational community?” Proposals submitted for this<br />

strand focus on the quantitative and/or qualitative impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> the PDS initiative.<br />

Student Poster Sessions<br />

For the sixth year in a row, teacher candidates have been given<br />

the opportunity to share their perspectives on their work in<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Schools. The 30 presentations will be<br />

held in one 2-hour Saturday session during which teacher<br />

candidates will <strong>of</strong>fer visual demonstrations <strong>of</strong> their work in PDS<br />

settings. Conference participants will have the opportunity to<br />

walk throughout the room and engage teacher candidates in<br />

conversations about their work.<br />

Matt Seimears is Associate Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Elementary,<br />

Early Childhood, and Special <strong>Education</strong> at The Teachers<br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Emporia State <strong>University</strong> in Emporia, Kansas, where<br />

he has taught since 2004. Dr. Seimears earned undergraduate<br />

degrees at Pittsburg State <strong>University</strong> and Newman <strong>University</strong>,<br />

a master’s degree in education at Wichita State <strong>University</strong>, and<br />

his Ph.D at Kansas State <strong>University</strong>, with a concentration on<br />

English Language Learners and Science <strong>Education</strong>. He has<br />

presented at numerous PDS National Conferences in the last six<br />

years and most recently has begun examining new forms <strong>of</strong><br />

technology which he believes will greatly enhance Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Development School experiences for all stakeholders and<br />

help us more effectively connect teacher candidates, mentors,<br />

Alfie Kohn<br />

Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behavior, education,<br />

and parenting. The latest <strong>of</strong> his twelve books are Feel-Bad <strong>Education</strong><br />

. . . and Other Contrarian Essays on Children and Schooling (2011),<br />

The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much <strong>of</strong> a Bad Thing<br />

(2006), and Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and<br />

Punishments to Love and Reason (2005). Of his earlier titles, the best<br />

known are Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars,<br />

Incentive Plans, A’s, Praise, and Other Bribes (1993); No Contest:<br />

The Case Against Competition (1986); and The Schools Our Children<br />

Deserve: Moving Beyond Traditional Classrooms and “Tougher<br />

Standards” (1999).<br />

Kohn has been described in Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s<br />

most outspoken critic <strong>of</strong> education’s fixation on grades [and] test<br />

scores.” His criticisms <strong>of</strong> competition and rewards have helped to<br />

shape the thinking <strong>of</strong> educators - as well as parents and managers -<br />

across the country and abroad. Kohn has been featured on hundreds<br />

<strong>of</strong> TV and radio <strong>program</strong>s, including the “Today” show and “Oprah”;<br />

he has been pr<strong>of</strong>iled in the Washington Post and the Los Angeles<br />

Times, and his work has been described and debated in many other<br />

leading publications.<br />

Kohn lectures widely at universities and to school faculties, parent<br />

groups, and corporations. In addition to speaking at staff development<br />

seminars and keynoting national education <strong>conference</strong>s on a regular<br />

basis, he conducts workshops for teachers and administrators on<br />

various topics, including “The (Progressive) Schools Our Children<br />

Deserve,” the subject <strong>of</strong> his presentation at the 2013 PDS National<br />

Conference.<br />

Understanding Bullying: How, Where, Why & What We<br />

Cynthia Lowen<br />

Cynthia Lowen, who received her BA at Colorado <strong>College</strong> and her<br />

MFA in creative writing at Sarah Lawrence <strong>College</strong>, is the co-filmmaker<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bully, a feature documentary following a “year in the life” <strong>of</strong><br />

America’s bullying crisis, which she developed, produced, and wrote<br />

in partnership with Emmy and Sundance Award-winning director Lee<br />

Hirsch. Filmed over the course <strong>of</strong> the 2009-2010 school year, Bully<br />

opens a window onto the pained and <strong>of</strong>ten endangered lives <strong>of</strong><br />

bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial,<br />

ethnic, and economic borders. It documents the responses <strong>of</strong> teachers<br />

and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will<br />

be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents,<br />

youth, and educators to change how bullying is handled in<br />

schools, in communities, and in society as a whole.<br />

Drawing from Bully’s success, Lowen and her team <strong>of</strong> filmmakers<br />

created The Bully Project Social Action Campaign, a collaborative<br />

effort in partnership with multiple organizations, foundations, brands,<br />

and corporate sponsors that aims to equip parents, kids, educators,<br />

and advocates with the tools to transform their communities. Lowen<br />

has lectured extensively on bullying and school climate, as well as<br />

the social impact <strong>of</strong> documentary films and the future <strong>of</strong> trans-media<br />

projects, speaking at The Open Society Foundations, the International<br />

Conference on Human Values, the Producers Guild <strong>of</strong> America,<br />

New York Women in Film and Television, Colorado <strong>College</strong>, the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Northern Iowa, the Tribeca Film Festival’s Tribeca Talks<br />

series, and Silverdocs, in addition to numerous Q&A’s for groups<br />

such as the National Center for Learning Disabilities, the United<br />

Federation <strong>of</strong> Teachers, student groups, and many others. We are<br />

pleased to have her at the 2013 PDS National Conference to share her<br />
