Carlos L. Esguerra
(First Prize) You can sample
the renowned cheeses in
Alkmaar, Netherlands, or tiptoe
through the tulip fields. Jaap
Hart chose the latter while
driving around his canal-lined
town one foggy morning. He
stopped the car and gingerly
stepped onto the blossoming
meadow, careful not to crush
any flowers. With his tripodmounted
Nikkormat FT2 and
24mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens, he
captured this vision of mist
and petal pinks. Exposure,
unrecorded; film, Fujichrome
Velvia 50. Image was printed
by an Internet printing service.
(Second Prize) For tulips American-style,
see these red and
yellow beauties shot by Tom
Guffey of Marysville, Washington.
Drawn to the vivid contrast
between the moody sky and
bright flowers, Guffey photographed
his local Skagit
Valley Tulip Fields using a
tripod-mounted Fuji GX617
panoramic camera and 90mm
f/5.6 Fujinon SWD lens. Exposure,
6 sec at f/45; film,
Kodak Ektachrome E100VS.
Guffey scanned the image,
then applied the Sharpen filter
in Photoshop 7.0. Image was
printed on an Epson Stylus
Photo 1280.
(Third Prize) While flying over
the Jersey Shore on assignment
for the local SandPaper
publication, Melissa Molyneux
of Bedminster, New Jersey, saw
this abstract meeting of surf
and earth, and grabbed the
shot with her Nikon D100.
Once she had descended from
treetops to desktop, Molyneux
made some minor adjustments
in Photoshop 7.0 and printed
the image on an Epson Stylus
Photo 750.
(Honorable Mention) On a trip
back to her hometown in Sac
County, Iowa, Patricia Repine
of Clermont, Florida, was drawn
to this haunting, ruined farmhouse.
The sunlight in the foreground
and the approaching
storm in the background created
a visual tension, which Repine
captured on a Canon EOS 10S
and 28–105mm f/3.5–4.5
Canon lens with a polarizing
filter. Exposure, unrecorded;
film, Fujichrome Provia 100.
She scanned the slide with a
Nikon Coolscan 2000, and
made minor adjustments in
Photoshop 5.5 (such as burn-
ing in the windows). Image was
printed on an Epson Stylus
Photo 1280.
(Honorable Mention) Carlos L.
Esguerra of Elmhurst, New
York, shot this quiet, stark
desert vista at New Mexico’s
White Sands National
Monument. He photographed
with a tripod-mounted Hasselblad
500CM and 80mm f/2.8
Planar CF lens. Exposure,
unrecorded; film, Fujichrome
Velvia 50. Esguerra scanned
the transparency with a Nikon
Super Coolscan 8000, and,
using Photoshop 7.0, adjusted
the contrast and converted the
image to black-and-white.
Image was printed on an Epson
Stylus Photo 2200.
