Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854, the son of an eminent surgeon. He
attended Trinity College, Dublin, then Magdalen College, Oxford, where, in the
last years of the seventies, he started the cult of “Aetheticism”—of an art of life.
He wrote several books, including The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), before
he became a successful playwright in both England and France. In 1895 Wilde
brought a libel action against the Marquis of Queensberry; he lost the case and
was himself sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labor for acts of
gross indecency. He was released from prison, bankrupt, in 1897 and went to
Paris, where he lived until his death in 1900.
