Dumb History
the stupidest mistakes ever made
Why do we get so much pleasure out of hearing about other people’s
mistakes? if anyone knows, it’s former national lampoon contributing editor
and bestselling author Joey Green. He’s cataloged history’s most boneheaded
blunders, including:
• in 820 ce, an herbalist designed an anti-aging elixir for emperor Hsien
tsung—it killed him.
• in 1849, brooklyn inventor Walter Hunt invented and patented the
safety pin and then sold all the rights to his invention for $400, never
receiving another penny for it. a century later, the united states
produced an estimated five billion safety pins annually. Hunt died broke
in 1859.
• in the 1930s, a newspaper to which novelist Rudyard kipling subscribed
incorrectly announced his death. in a letter to the editor, kipling wrote:
“i’ve just read that i am dead. Don’t forget to delete me from your list
of subscribers.”
trivia and history buffs as well as anyone who enjoys feeling superior to their
fellow humans will devour Dumb History.
