Starting at the Finish Line introduces readers to the “rule book”
of legendary track and cross-country Duke University coach
Al Buehler. Along with his “pep talks” and coach-able quotes, the
book comprises the timeless lessons with which he has inspired
and motivated Olympic and national champion track and field
stars, including Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Mary Decker
Slaney, as well as countless other Olympians and professional
athletes, and the thousands of Duke students who have attended
his unique class, History and Issues of American Sports.
Throughout the book, America’s top athletes, whom he has coached
over the past five decades, share why Buehler has made such an
indelible mark on their lives on and off the field and outside the
classroom. In their words and by their actions, they show why the
Coach’s “rules” work.
“Coach Buehler is someone who left an indelible mark in my life.
He’s simply a great person, a great human being.”
—Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympic Gold Medalist
“There are a lot of great men and there are a lot of great coaches.
And Coach Buehler was definitely one of those.”
—Carl Lewis, 9-time Olympic gold medalist
“To me, Al is the best example of a teacher-coach in
intercollegiate sports.”
—Mike (Coach K) Krzyzewski, Duke Men’s Basketball
Amy E. Unell, a native of Kansas City, KS, was an Emmy ® -nominated
premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011. She lives in Los Angeles.
