alexanDRe DuMas (1802–1870) was the son of Napoleon’s<br />

famous general Dumas. A prolific author, his body of work includes a<br />

number of popular classics, including The Three Musketeers and The Man<br />

in the Iron Mask.<br />

RoBin Buss (1939–2006) was a writer and translator who worked<br />

for the Independent on Sunday and as television critic for the Times<br />

Educational Supplement. He was also the translator of a number of volumes<br />

for <strong>Penguin</strong> Classics.<br />

williaM MakePeaCe thaCkeRay (1811–1863) was born<br />

and educated to be a gentleman but gambled away much of his fortune.<br />

He was a regular contributor to periodicals and Vanity Fair was serialized<br />

in Punch in 1847–1848.<br />

John CaRey is Professor of English at Oxford University and the chief<br />

book re<strong>view</strong>er of the Sunday Times (London). He lives in London.<br />

CoRalie BiCkfoRD-sMith is an award-winning designer at<br />

<strong>Penguin</strong> Books (U.K.), where she has created several highly acclaimed<br />

series designs. She studied typography at Reading University and lives in<br />
