<strong>Power</strong> Grid Corporation <strong>of</strong> India Ltd.<br />
(POWERGRID)<br />
As <strong>of</strong> March 31, 2004, POWERGRID is<br />
operating a total <strong>of</strong> 47,757 ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong><br />
transmission lines consisting <strong>of</strong> 563 ckt. kms.<br />
<strong>of</strong> 800 kV, 4,368 ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong> HVDC; 33,281<br />
ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong> 400 kV; 7,356 ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong> 220<br />
kV; 2,152 ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong> 132 kV and 37 Ckt.<br />
Kms. <strong>of</strong> 66 kV level along with 82 Sub-stations<br />
with transforma-tion capacity <strong>of</strong> 46,461 MVA.<br />
With the use <strong>of</strong> modern state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art preventive<br />
maintenance techniques, average availability <strong>of</strong><br />
transmission systems during the year 2003-04<br />
was maintained at 99.28%. Based on its network<br />
size and operational efficiency, POWERGRID<br />
ranks among one <strong>of</strong> largest and best-managed<br />
transmission utilities in the World. POWERGRID<br />
continues to wheel about 40% <strong>of</strong> total power<br />
generated in the country through its gigantic<br />
transmission network.<br />
The company registered a Turnover <strong>of</strong> Rs. 2783<br />
Crore and earned a Net pr<strong>of</strong>it (After tax) <strong>of</strong> Rs.<br />
740 Crore thereby recording a Net pr<strong>of</strong>it margin<br />
<strong>of</strong> 26.59%. The company’s Gross asset base at<br />
the end <strong>of</strong> the financial year 2003-04 stood at<br />
Rs. 20,000 Crore as against Rs 18,943 Crore at<br />
the end <strong>of</strong> last financial year.<br />
The company undertook a capital investment <strong>of</strong><br />
Rs.2,351 Crore during the financial year 2003-04<br />
and the required funds were tied up from internal<br />
resources, bonds/term loan from the domestic<br />
sources, grant from Government <strong>of</strong> India and ECB/<br />
Supplier’s Credit. During FY 2003-04,<br />
POWERGRID raised Rs. 900 Crore from the<br />
domestic capital market to finance its capital<br />
investment program and the appraisal process<br />
was initiated to tie up foreign loans worth about<br />
US$ 2,000 million from The World bank and<br />
ADB for future expansion program. Costlier loans<br />
<strong>of</strong> Rs. 1,584 Crore were re-financed with cheaper<br />
loans/ bonds thereby saving Rs. 551 Crore for<br />
residual period <strong>of</strong> loans, which have been passed<br />
on to the beneficiaries by way <strong>of</strong> reduction in<br />
payable transmission tariff.<br />
During financial year 2003-04, POWERGRID<br />
commissioned 1,512 circuit km <strong>of</strong> transmission<br />
lines and established Three (3) new sub-stations<br />
<strong>of</strong> 400/220 kV EHV AC (2) and 132/66 kV substation<br />
(1) in the year, besides extension <strong>of</strong><br />
existing sub-stations and added transformation<br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> 1725 MVA. Major projects<br />
commissioned include, North-Eastern Region<br />
Chapter - 21.3<br />
ULDC Scheme, third in the series <strong>of</strong> ULDC<br />
Schemes, commissioned 7 months ahead <strong>of</strong><br />
schedule and Rs. 50 Crore less than the<br />
approved cost <strong>of</strong> Rs. 264 Crore; Chamera-II 400<br />
kV transmission system, Commissioned in a<br />
record time <strong>of</strong> 10 months and within the approved<br />
cost; Khammam-Nagarjunasagar 400 kV Single<br />
Circuit line, Commissioned 18 months ahead <strong>of</strong><br />
schedule, etc.<br />
In addition to above, 10 new projects worth about<br />
Rs. 4,000 Crore, with 4,400 Ckt Kms, have been<br />
taken up for implementation in 2003-04, which<br />
include Tala transmission system, Raipur-<br />
Chadrapur transmission system, Neelmangala-<br />
Mysore transmission line, Sipat-I transmission<br />
system, Vindhaychal-Korba Trans. System,<br />
Teesta-V, System Strengthening-I in NR, System<br />
Strengthening -II in NR, System Strengthening<br />
in –IV in SR, and Strengthening in Vidhyachal-<br />
Singraulli corridor.<br />
Presently, about 51 transmission projects,<br />
costing about Rs 11,250 Crore are under<br />
implementation and most <strong>of</strong> the projects are either<br />
on schedule or ahead <strong>of</strong> schedule. Further, 18<br />
transmission projects (14,600 Ckt Kms) costing<br />
about 11,200 Crore are initiated and are under<br />
various stages <strong>of</strong> investment approval.<br />
The outstanding dues <strong>of</strong> CPSUs in power sector<br />
were securitised by signing the Tripartite<br />
Agreements (TPAs). Under securitization scheme,<br />
out <strong>of</strong> a total <strong>of</strong> 29 states, the Tripartite<br />
Agreement (TPA) has been signed by 27 states<br />
and issued bonds worth Rs. 1803 Crore against<br />
outstanding dues <strong>of</strong> POWERGRID which includes<br />
conversion <strong>of</strong> old bonds <strong>of</strong> Rs. 613 Crore. This<br />
has helped in liquidation <strong>of</strong> past dues and also<br />
timely payment towards the current dues.<br />
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT<br />
POWERGRID, an ISO 9001 certified company,<br />
has acquired in-house expertise at par with global<br />
standards in the field <strong>of</strong> Planning, Engineering,<br />
Load Despatch and Communication,<br />
Telecommunication, Contracting, Financial and<br />
Project Management. During the year 2003-04,<br />
Business Development activity in POWERGRID<br />
has shown a quantum jump in securing<br />
consultancy assignments and revenue realisation<br />
besides venturing into new areas <strong>of</strong> consultancy.<br />
