Chapter - 21.1<br />
National Thermal <strong>Power</strong> Corporation Ltd.<br />
National Thermal <strong>Power</strong> Corporation (NTPC) was<br />
set up in 1975, as a central sector generating<br />
company to plan, promote and develop thermal<br />
power in India. The Corporation has rapidly grown<br />
to become largest thermal generating company<br />
in India. The total approved investment <strong>of</strong> the<br />
corporation as on 31.03.2004 stands at<br />
Rs.79336.67 crores.<br />
The commissioned capacity <strong>of</strong> NTPC owned<br />
stations, as on 31.03.2004 is 21,749 MW<br />
(statement enclosed as Annexure). Presently,<br />
NTPC has to its credit 13 coal based thermal<br />
power projects and 7-gas/liquid fuel based<br />
combined cycle projects. In addition, NTPC has<br />
acquired 314 MW <strong>of</strong> Captive <strong>Power</strong> Plants <strong>of</strong><br />
SAIL through formation <strong>of</strong> a Joint Venture<br />
Companies with SAIL.<br />
Besides its own stations, NTPC also manages<br />
the Badarpur Thermal <strong>Power</strong> Station in Delhi<br />
(705 MW).<br />
NTPC PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS: as on<br />
31.03.2004<br />
During the year 2003-2004, an all time high<br />
generation <strong>of</strong> over 149161 Million Units was<br />
achieved registering an increase <strong>of</strong> 5.9% over<br />
the previous year’s generation <strong>of</strong> 140868<br />
Million units. With 19.24% share in the total<br />
installed capacity <strong>of</strong> the country, NTPC<br />
contributed 26.7% electricity during<br />
2003-2004.<br />
NTPC stations recorded the highest PLF <strong>of</strong><br />
84.4 % since inception at availability <strong>of</strong><br />
88.8%. Rihand achieved the highest PLF <strong>of</strong><br />
90.6%, followed by Singrauli (89%), Korba<br />
(88.5%), Ramagundam (88.5%), Simhadri<br />
(87.9%), Unchahar (87.4%), Dadri Coal<br />
(83.8%) Vindhyachal (82.4%), Talcher Kaniha<br />
(81.7%) and Kahalgaon (80.9%). Tanda, a<br />
takeover project, achieved the highest ever<br />
PLF <strong>of</strong> 75.3 %. Badarpur station managed<br />
by NTPC achieved the highest ever PLF <strong>of</strong><br />
87.7%.<br />
The year 2003-04 was yet another period <strong>of</strong><br />
satisfying performance for National Thermal<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Corporation (NTPC). The Corporation<br />
has achieved all the targets set for it for<br />
“Excellent” rating in the MOU with Govt. <strong>of</strong><br />
India for the 17th consecutive year In April<br />
2003. NTPC received ‘Merit Certificate’ for<br />
excellence in achievement <strong>of</strong> MOU targets<br />
for the year 2001-02 in May 2003.<br />
The Company is at present implementing<br />
Eight power projects with a capacity <strong>of</strong> 8010<br />
MW viz. 2000 MW Talcher Stage-II in<br />
Orissa (4 x 500 MW), Ramagundam<br />
Stage-III (1 x 500 MW) in Andhra Pradesh,<br />
1000 MW Rihand Stage-II in Uttar Pradesh<br />
(2 x 500 MW), 800 MW Koldam Hydro<br />
Electric <strong>Power</strong> Project in Himachal Pradesh<br />
(4 x 200MW), 1000 MW Vindhyachal<br />
stage –III in Madhya Pradesh (2 x 500<br />
MW), 1000 MW Kahalgoan stage –II<br />
phase-I in Bihar(2 x 500MW), 500 MW<br />
Kahalgoan stage –II phase-II in Bihar(1 x<br />
500MW), 1000 MW Sipat-II in Chhatisgarh<br />
(2x500 MW) and 210 MW Unchahar-III in<br />
Uttar Pradesh (1x210 MW) Out <strong>of</strong> 8010 MW<br />
the first two units <strong>of</strong> 500 MW each <strong>of</strong><br />
Talcher stage –II (4 x 500 MW) have<br />
already been synchronized ahead <strong>of</strong><br />
schedule in January 2003 and October 2003<br />
respectively and the same have been<br />
declared commercial since 1st August 2003<br />
and 1st March 2004 respectively.<br />
NTPC has paid a dividend <strong>of</strong> Rs.747.46<br />
crores for the financial year 2002-03<br />
(including dividend tax <strong>of</strong> Rs.39.46crores).<br />
The energy billed for the year 2003-04 were<br />
Rs.20382.29 crore with realisation <strong>of</strong><br />
Rs.21394.82 crore i.e. 105%.<br />
8.5% tax free power bonds <strong>of</strong> Rs.15788.40<br />
crore issued by RBI on behalf <strong>of</strong> State<br />
Government against NTPC’s dues upto 30th September 2001 from SEBs under One-<br />
Time-Settlement Scheme.<br />
Detailed Project Reports are ready for<br />
Loharinag Pala (4 x 150 MW) and<br />
Tapovan Vishnugad (4x 130 MW) hydro<br />
projects.<br />
NTPC Hydro Limited a wholly owned<br />
subsidiary has been set up to carry out<br />
business <strong>of</strong> implementing and operating small<br />
and medium hydro power projects <strong>of</strong> upto<br />
250 MW capacity. It has signed a MOU<br />
with Government <strong>of</strong> Uttaranchal for<br />
implementation <strong>of</strong> Lata Tapovan Hydro<br />
Electric Project (108 MW). MOEF first<br />
stage clearance for the project received and<br />
survey and investigation work awarded.<br />
NVVN transacted business with 18 state<br />
utilities trading in more than 1300 MU’s in<br />
2003-04.<br />
