Conclusions<br />

The work presented in this dissertation addresses some of the most relevant<br />

issues regarding pushing the frontier of ERLs, in particular, exploring energy recov-<br />

ery with high energy and on a large scale, and the high average current effects that<br />

arise. The contributions in these two regimes are described in the following sections.<br />

8.1 CEBAF with Energy Recovery<br />

The experiment to energy recover the beam in the CEBAF accelerator repre-<br />

sents the first attempt to bridge the gap between the existing low energy (order 100<br />

MeV), compact (up to 3 cryomodules), SRF-based ERLs and the proposed ERL<br />

drivers of the future. While it would have been ideal to have more quantitative<br />

measurements of the second pass beam, by successfully energy recovering the beam<br />

several important milestones were established. To date, CEBAF-ER has demon-<br />

strated energy recovery<br />

• of the highest energy beam (1 GeV)<br />

• on the largest scale (through a 1.3 km transport channel)<br />
