Dear Collectors,
This last Stamp Bulletin for 2005 begins with an
Australian Territories issue, Aviation in the AAT, and
the second in the Treasures of the Archives series
featuring a Centennial 20 shilling stamp issued in 1888.
The new Marking the Occasion stamps are a 45c card
rate Christmas stamp and a special 50c stamp design
depicting Australia.
In October we celebrate Stamp Collecting Month
and a special children’s issue – Down on the Farm. Our
Christmas 2005 stamp issue continues to tell the traditional
Christmas story of the birth of the Christ Child. And don’t
forget to add the 2005 Collection of Australian Stamps to
your Christmas gift list this year. The Collection includes
the Australian Parrots sheetlet.
This September edition marks my fi nal Bulletin as
Manager of the Philatelic Group. I have been asked to take
up the position of Group Manager for the larger portfolio
of Retail Services for Australia Post. I am moving into my
new role as this edition goes to print.
The wonderful experience and knowledge gained from
a very special Philatelic Group will carry me forward and
I will greatly miss this unique team of people. The special
collectors I have come to know as friends, together with
the key support from industry partners, the Australian
Philatelic Federation and the Australian Philatelic Traders
Association will also be missed.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our
readers for your letters of support and interest in Philatelic,
and to introduce Mr Noel Leahy who has taken up the
position of Manager for the Philatelic Group. I wish Noel,
and you all, the very best for the future.
A reminder to all our readers that as of January 2006 the
Bulletin will be distributed to you quarterly. You can look
forward to a full three months’ worth of stamp issue news
in each edition.
Sincerely,
Amber McDougall, Manager, Philatelic Group

AVIATION IN THE AAT
Stamps shown 82% actual size
Aircraft have been used in the Australian
Antarctic Territory since the early days of
powered flight. When Mawson included an
aircraft in his expedition of 1911-14, it was
only eight years after the Wright brothers’
invention.
Since the establishment of the Australian
Antarctic Division in 1948, aircraft have
played an important role in reconnaissance
and photography, support for ground and
ice parties, and scientifi c measurements. The
fi rst hanger built in the AAT was constructed
at Mawson in 1956.
There were eight stamps issued in 1888-89
to commemorate the New South Wales
Centennial. The stamps were the world’s first
stated commemorative stamps. Each stamp
is inscribed “100 years”. Unlike modern
commemorative issues, they were not shortterm
stamps, and remained on long-term
sale. The 20 shilling stamp was current from
1888 until 1913, when it was replaced by the
Commonwealth’s Kangaroo and Map stamp.
Five of the Centennial stamp designs were
the result of a public competition organised
by the NSW government, led by Premier Sir
Henry Parkes. The winning design for the
20 shilling stamp was by Mrs F W Stoddard.
The stamp design features portraits of NSW
Governors Arthur Phillip (1788) and Lord
Carrington (1888).
This might have been a world precedent,
and was the fi rst Australian stamp to depict
a living person other than Queen Victoria.
The fl owers which surround the portraits
are Christmas Bells, and were chosen as
“appropriately suggestive of ringing in the
glad Centennial time”.
THE STAMP
On the jumbo stamp, the 20 shilling
Centennial stamp is depicted in multiple
format to represent the full sheet of 50 held in
the National Philatelic Collection. The sheet
is believed to be unique. The “specimen”
overprint was applied to archival sheets to
prevent possible misuse of the stamps for
postage.
Booklets of 10 and
20 x 50c stamps
Stamp Collecting Month was established
in 1993 and its purpose is to introduce
children to the world of philately and stamp
collecting. Recent themes have included
Cats and Dogs, Bugs and Butterflies and The
Magic Rainforest. The theme for Stamp
Collecting Month 2005, Down on the Farm,
takes a whimsical and humorous look at the
farmyard animals living on Gumnut Farm.
The theme chosen is one that is always
popular with children.
THE STAMPS
50C Chloe the Chicken
Chloe is very confused. She thought she
had six children but can only find five!
Yesterday all she had was a clutch of eggs
–but they keep hatching and it’s so difficult
to keep track of them all.
Stamp Collecting Month
Sheetlets of fi ve x 50c
and fi ve x $1.00 stamps
Miniature sheet shown 22% of actual size
50c Lucy the Lamb
Lucy doesn’t know what to make of the
colourful flapping creatures that keep
landing on her nose. She’d quite like to
make friends with them, but they won’t sit
still long enough for a conversation.
50c Gilbert the Goat
Gilbert is feeling a little ill. With his sister
Gertie’s help he’s managed to jump onto
the fence of the vegetable garden and he’s
been helping himself to whatever he can
find–and now he thinks he may have bitten
off more than he can chew!
50c Ralph the Pig
The piglets are the naughtiest animals on
the farm – and Ralph is the naughtiest
piglet of all. He can’t help getting into
trouble and persuades his brother Rupert
to make a big pool of mud. What fun!
50c Abigail the Cow
Abigail is happiest in the meadow munching
on fresh dandelions and rich green grass. She
knows that this diet will help her produce the
creamiest milk. Perched on Abigail’s back,
Willy Wagtail chatters away. Abigail secretly
finds him a bit irritating, but is too polite to
say, even when he invites one of his cousins
to perch on her head!

$1.00 Harry the Horse
Harry the Horse likes nothing better than
to gallop at full speed across the paddocks
with his best friends, the Blue Heeler pups.
Harry especially loves to race – mainly
because he always wins.
ILLUSTRATION and DESIGN
The illustrator, Jamie Tufrey, grew up on
the family sheep and cattle property in the
mountain ranges of northern New South
Wales.
Tufrey is based in Sydney and Down on
the Farm is his fi rst Australian stamp issue.
Each stamp has one or more small creatures
hidden in the illustration for children to
find. These include worms, a frog, snail,
turtle, grasshopper, dragonfly, spider,
snake, ladybird, rabbit and caterpillars.
After initial pencil sketches, a computer
together with graphic design software were
used to create the final look of the stamps.
The soft, fluffy feathers of the hen are
composed of 200 individual feathers and
special software was created to achieve this.
the democratic election process.
The Tasmanian Parliament was initially
constituted as a bicameral (meaning two
fi rst sitting on 2 December 1856.
The Victorian Parliament was established
in 1855, and was officially opened on 25
Christmas 2005
Christmas stamps have been issued in
Australia every year since 1957. The practice
in the last few years has been to represent the
traditional Christmas story, and this year is
no exception. The two stamps for 2005 show
the Madonna and Child (45c concession card
rate) and a beautifully detailed Adoring Angel
($1 International Post).
The artist, Ursula Betka, paints using the
age-old techniques of icon painting. The
exquisite images are painted on a wood
panel that is fi rst prepared with a white gesso
(meaning chalk) ground. The background is
real 23-carat gold leaf, originally designed
to catch the fl ickering light of church candles.
The paints used are tempera, or pigment
mixed with egg yolk, also in the tradition of
medieval art.
The original holy icons have been specially
blessed in the tradition of the Church. Like
these precious icons each stamp glitters like a
rare jewel. These beautiful stamps celebrate
Christmas with serene joy and peace.
THE STAMPS
45c Madonna and Child
This image is derived from the ancient icon
tradition of the Virgin and Christ Child,
where mother and baby touch tenderly at
the cheek. This intimate gesture expresses
universal loving kindness and compassion.
Mary’s beauty reflects both her spiritual
12
qualities and the great love she holds for her
son. Jesus displays to his mother a little bird
– a goldfinch, which is a traditional medieval
symbol of Christ. The star on Mary’s robe is
symbolic of the star that led the three wise
men to the crib in Bethlehem.
$1.00 Adoring Angel
This stamp depicts an angel in a gesture of
sacred adoration. An angel brought news
of the Holy birth to shepherds outside
Bethlehem and angels traditionally appear
adoring the Virgin and Child in scenes of
the Nativity.
Ethereal creatures, they are neither male
nor female. The word “angel” comes from the
Greek word “angelos” (messenger) and they
are largely seen as messengers from God or
manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
ILLUSTRATOR
Ursula Betka is an artist specialising in
icon painting with a PhD in medieval art
history. Betka teaches Art History at the
University of Melbourne and the National
Gallery of Victoria. Betka also teaches icon
painting at The Council of Adult Education
in Melbourne.
Christmas Island is a remote Australian
Territory located in the Indian Ocean some
2,600 kilometres north-west of Perth and
360 kilometres south of Jakarta.
Christmas Island was fi rst settled in the
late nineteenth century in order to develop
the phosphate industry. The population of
Christmas Island today is over 1,500 and
includes Chinese, Malay and European
communities.
Christmas Island Christmas stamps are
issued every alternate year. While Australian
Christmas stamps are based on traditional
religious themes, recent Christmas Island
Christmas stamps have included Santa Claus
in a variety of island settings. Christmas
Island stamps are valid for use within
Australia and can be used as an alternative
Christmas stamp.
PACIFIC EXPLORER 2005 Stamp Expo Update
PACIFIC EXPLORER HIGHLIGHTS
Pacific Explorer Stamp Expo took place in
April at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition
Centre. It was enjoyed by the keen collector and
interested observer, with news of the events and
activities spreading far and wide. Take a look at
some of the highlights from the event – often
called the Stamp Olympics!
Day One
The centre stage area at the Exhibition Centre
was abuzz from the minute the expo opened.
Day One and the official opening was attended
by hundreds of well-wishers. Her Excellency
Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW, officially
opening the Expo with Mr Graeme John,
Managing Director of Australia Post, Mr Koh
Seow Chuan, President of the Fédération
Internationale de Philatélie and other VIP
guests in attendence.
Australia put its best foot forward when it
came to welcoming so many representatives
from around the world. A moving didgeridoo
performance and a “Welcome to Country’
was given by a local Aboriginal elder, mixed
with the stirring voices of an a cappella group,
symbolising the energies and efforts of philately
in Australia. Day One also saw the launch of
the fi rst of four stamp issues for the Expo – the
World Heritage Joint Stamp Issue with the UK.
Present to unveil the new images were
the Right Honourable Sir Alastair Goodlad,
former British High Commissioner; the
Honourable Bob Debus, NSW Minister for the
Environment; Julietta Edgar, UK Royal Mail
and Amber McDougall, Australia Post.
Next were the Olympians – Kerri Pottharst
and Giaan Rooney – who signed products
and showed their medals to an avid audience.
The day closed with the announcement by
Australia Post that Personalised Stamps
would now be available on-line. The popular
TV and radio scientist, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki,
outlined the process to an entertained audience.
Day Two
This was a day for children! Australia Post’s
second stamp issue was first up, with the
Creatures of the Slime stamps capturing
the imagination of dozens of local school
children who were specially dressed for
the occasion. Drs Pat Vickers-Rich and Jim
Gehling gave everyone an insight into the
fascinating world of these ancient creatures.
Saturday Disney host Daniel Widdowson
gave the event a dash of pizzazz, and staff from
the Sydney Aquarium gave children a glance at
a modern-day “creature of the slime”. Another
dose of Olympians – Susie O’Neill, Alice Mills
and Chris Fydler – saw queues of people lining
up to secure their signatures.
Day Three
Reserved for Australia Post’s most popular
stamp release over the four days – the launch
of the Centenary of Rotary International was
marked by key Rotarians, including Glen
Kinross, past Rotary International president.
Day Three also saw the announcement
of the winners of the ACMI Australia Post
First Moving Image School Competition. More
than 10 schools in NSW had representatives
watching the results of their efforts, together
with mums and dads from around the State.
Day Four
The fourth and final day was reserved for award
presentations, and the launch of the stamp
issue commemorating the 150th Anniversary
of the First Australian Coin. Dr.Vivienne Thom,
Head of the Royal Australian Mint, and Robert
Griffin, Curator of the Sydney Mint, took an
historical approach to their presentation and
gave unique insights into this stamp issue.
PACIFIC EXPLORER 2005
DEALERS, TRADERS and EXHIBITORS
Over 150 volunteers worked tirelessly in
the installation of the exhibits receiving
congratulations from the exhibitors for
their efforts. The highlight of the Court of
Honour, was The Tapling Collection which
was presented by David Beech of the
British Library. Mr Beech was especially
pleased with the presentation of the exhibit,
particularly after the lengthy administrative
work involved in bringing this renowned
collection to Australia.
This substantial exhibit of 170 pages,
focused on the Australian Colonies and the
Countries of the Pacifi c. It included many
philatelic icons such as the original essays of
the 1d and 3d “Sydney Views”, the Western
Australia 1854 inverted frame, the Hawaii
1851 2c “Missionary” and the Mauritius 1847
“Post Offi ce” 1d on cover and 2d unused.
Competitive exhibits were of a very high
standard with the Australia Post Grand Prix
being won by George J Kramer (USA) for his
exhibit of US Domestic Mail 1776 to 1869.
The exhibit achieved a score of 98 points and
included letters to Martha Washington and
Benjamin Franklin. Also featured was a FDC
to John Hancock dated 4 July 1776!
Many of the dealers and traders who
attended were complimentary of the
organisation and the exhibition overall.
One dealer of note achieved the highest
16
single sale, over $500,000, which is believed
to be a record single sale in Australia.
A survey of visitors to Pacifi c Explorer
World Stamp Expo 2005 gave their stamp
of approval to the event with 92% of those
surveyed rating the overall exhibition as
either “very good” or “good”.
YOUTH AREA
What a success! The Youth Area at Pacific
Explorer welcomed over 1,250 children who
participated in the fun and activities available.
Australia Post staff and volunteers from
the APF were on hand to keep the children
active and excited about stamp collecting
and children’s stamp issues. Children were
encouraged to make their way through a
maze of rooms – each room featuring a
different activity.
Things to do included making your own
dinosaur footprints, badgemaking, letter
writing and creating envelopes. Once
children had completed each of the room
activities, and a completion stamp was placed
in their book, they were then taken on a
guided tour around the exhibition.
The comments from visitors were
that they had been both entertained and
informed. Interest in collecting stamps has
certainly increased for these children!

Stamp Expo Update
SNAPSHOT! and PERSONALISED STAMPS
One of the innovations featured at Pacific
Explorer was the first personalised booklet
–Snapshot! Souvenir Booklet. There was a
steady stream of buyers eager to have their
photograph placed into this lasting Pacific
Explorer memento. The feedback from
those who purchased the product was very
positive – from as young as a two-year-old
through to Royal Mail agent, Max Stern.
This is another first for Australia Post and
will be a product to look out for in the
future. Generic versions of the Snapshot!
Souvenir Booklet are available from mail
order.
The Personalised Stamps service was
also kept busy with Expo visitors taking
the opportunity to select a sheet of stamps
and having their image placed in the tabs.
Marking the Occasion, the recently released
stamp issue designed for use with this service,
offered buyers a wide and varied selection of
designs. The launch of the service on-line was
a highlight on the fi rst day of Pacifi c Explorer.
Western Australia inverted frame from the Tapling Collection
POSTSHOP AT PACIFIC EXPLORER
The PostShop was a busy place to be at Pacific
Explorer with displays of all current stamp
releases housed in individual bays.
As well as the full displays of all products
for each of the new issues, there were also a
number of products exclusive to the Pacifi c
Explorer Postshop. The new Stamp and Pin
product, one design for each of the four
new stamp issues released at the show, was a
sought after item by many collectors with a
limited number still available by mail order.
There were exhibition covers, postcards
and the very popular Centenary of Rotary
International imperforate sheetlet. Australia
Post also made available other products at the
show prior to their release nationally.
The exhibition had 31 different pictorial
postmarks with a separate Postshop counter
available to allow postmark collectors to take
their time, view the postmark designs and
talk to our postmarking specialists.
Australia Post staff were selected from all
over NSW with their selection based on their
knowledge of philately and customer service
skills. Staff from the Postshop received
warm compliments from visitors for their
welcoming attitude and friendly service.
