AUSTRALIA 45c
Since the fi rst Christmas stamps were issued
in Australia in 1957 there have been many
depictions of the traditional Christmas story.
This year, the Christmas stamps were designed
by Indigenous artist Sally Morgan. With
her distinctive style and characteristic use of
brilliant colour Morgan has created a joyous set
of stamps with a uniquely Australian character.
The stamps
The stamp designs illustrate scenes from the
story of the birth of Christ
Mary and the baby Jesus (45c domestic
greeting card concession rate)
Three wise men (50c domestic base rate for
standard letters)
Angel appearing to the shepherds (90c
domestic large/non-standard rate)
The aerogramme
The aerogramme follows the design treatment
of the stamps. It features a nativity scene in the
illustration area and the Christmas star in the
stamp area.
The designer
Sally Morgan was born in Perth, WA, in 1951.
She fi rst came to national prominence with
the publication of her book, My Place, which
tells the story of her reconnection with her
Aboriginal culture and community. The book

Stamp pack, doubles as greeting card
was an immediate success and has gone on to
sell over half a million copies in Australia. My
Place won the Australian Human Rights Award
for Literature in 1987 and the 1990 Order of
Australia Book Prize.
Morgan has also established a reputation as
an artist in Australia and overseas. Her works
can be found in private and public collections.
Her work fi rst appeared on a stamp in
1993 when her print Outback was selected
for use on a United Nations stamp issued for
the celebration of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. Her fi rst illustration for an
Australian philatelic product was the Network
of Friendship aerogramme (September 1995).
