CHRISTMAS 2003<br />
AUSTRALIA 45c<br />
Since the fi rst Christmas <strong>stamp</strong>s were issued<br />
in <strong>Australia</strong> in 1957 there have been many<br />
depictions of the traditional Christmas story.<br />
This year, the Christmas <strong>stamp</strong>s were designed<br />
by Indigenous artist Sally Morgan. With<br />
her distinctive style and characteristic use of<br />
brilliant colour Morgan has created a joyous set<br />
of <strong>stamp</strong>s with a uniquely <strong>Australia</strong>n character.<br />

The <strong>stamp</strong> designs illustrate scenes from the<br />
story of the birth of Christ<br />
Mary and the baby Jesus (45c domestic<br />
greeting card concession rate)<br />
Three wise men (50c domestic base rate for<br />
standard letters)<br />
Angel appearing to the shepherds (90c<br />
domestic large/non-standard rate)<br />
The aerogramme<br />
The aerogramme follows the design treatment<br />
of the <strong>stamp</strong>s. It features a nativity scene in the<br />
illustration area and the Christmas star in the<br />
<strong>stamp</strong> area.<br />
The designer<br />
Sally Morgan was born in Perth, WA, in 1951.<br />
She fi rst came to national prominence with<br />
the publication of her book, My Place, which<br />
tells the story of her reconnection with her<br />
Aboriginal culture and community. The book<br />

Stamp pack, doubles as greeting card<br />
was an immediate success and has gone on to<br />
sell over half a million copies in <strong>Australia</strong>. My<br />
Place won the <strong>Australia</strong>n Human Rights Award<br />
for Literature in 1987 and the 1990 Order of<br />
<strong>Australia</strong> Book Prize.<br />
Morgan has also established a reputation as<br />
an artist in <strong>Australia</strong> and overseas. Her works<br />
can be found in private and public collections.<br />
Her work fi rst appeared on a <strong>stamp</strong> in<br />
1993 when her print Outback was selected<br />
for use on a United Nations <strong>stamp</strong> issued for<br />
the celebration of the Universal Declaration<br />
of Human Rights. Her fi rst illustration for an<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n philatelic product was the Network<br />
of Friendship aerogramme (September 1995).<br />
