LAW 012 - TORT LAW AND CLAIMS INVESTIGATION (CSU) - 3.00 UNITS<br />

PREREQUISITES: Law 10 and English 101. This course will provide an introduction to the broad area of civil wrongs and their<br />

appropriate remedies as well as Tort Law principles in the traditional areas of international torts, negligence, strict liability,<br />

nuisance, and the commonly employed defences.<br />

PREREQUISITE: Law 10 with satisfactory grades or equivalent. This course will provide a study of the fundamental principles of the<br />

law of wills and trusts, including simple will and trust forms and formation; an examination of the organization and jurisdiction of<br />

the California Probate Court, with an overview of the administration of estates in probate.<br />

The student examines the federal, state, and local laws that most directly affect mass communication in the United States, focusing<br />

on: a basic understanding of the American legal system, its institutions, and some of its terminology; a broad understanding of<br />

First Amendment principles as they relate to mass communication; and a working knowledge ofthe laws that directly restrict or<br />

enhance information gathering and message dissemination in the mass media, and an understanding of the rationales behind those<br />

laws.<br />

ADVISORIES: Law 10 and English 101. Students learn the fundamental concepts of immigration law including grounds of exclusion,<br />

defenses to deportation, petitions and visa applications. Research and writing are emphasized in the areas of amnesty,<br />

naturalization, citizenship, international law, criminal aspects of immigration, and various types of immigration applications.<br />

LAW 037 - BANKRUPTCY AND CREDITOR'S RIGHTS - 3.00 UNITS<br />

Students learn the basics of bankruptcy law and procedure. The course focuses predominantly on Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcy,<br />

including preparing the necessary forms for these types of bankruptcy. Other topics include, but are not limited to, the evolution of<br />

bankruptcy law, researching bankruptcy law, the roles of various individuals in the bankruptcy process, and information gathering<br />

and counseling.<br />

Students learn substantive criminal law and the procedural rights of criminal defendants. The two essential elements of a crime - mens<br />

rea and actus reus - will be covered in detail. Other topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to, crimes against the<br />

person, crimes against property and habitation, crimes against the public, parties and inchoate offenses, and factual and statutory<br />

defenses.<br />

LEARNING SKILLS 001A - READING (NDA) - 1.00 UNITS Rpt 3<br />

DESCRIPTION: Individualized reading instruction for English as a Native Language (ENL) and English as a Second Language (ESL)<br />

students from beginning to advanced college level. Students will progress from reading sentences and paragraphs to short<br />

selections and excerpts from novels.<br />
