Students examine the development of social identities in diverse societies including theoretical and practical implications of<br />

oppression and privilege as they apply to young children, families, programs, classrooms and teaching. Various classroom strategies<br />

are explored emphasizing culturally and linguistically appropriate anti-bias approaches supporting all children in becoming competent<br />

members of a diverse society. Student utilize self-examination to reflect on issues related to social identity, stereotypes and bias,<br />

social and educational access, media and schooling.<br />

ADVISORY: English 21. This course is designed for students intending to work with children with special needs. Students examine<br />

components of a comprehensive service delivery system that is based on legal mandates and an understanding of typical development<br />

across all domains. Also discussed is the role of observation and documentation in adapting the environment, creating instructional<br />

strategies an in developing Individual Education Plans.<br />

Students interested in continuing the Child Development Lab experience will focus on quality literacy experiences such as, exposure to<br />

age-appropriate literacy materials (modeling or practicing) library habits under the supervision of a literacy expert. Students will<br />

evaluate and analyze literacy materials, able to write activity plans, and create instructional materials that support emerging<br />

literacy. A $20.00 lab fee is required.<br />
