PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES (CSU) - 3.00 UNITS<br />

CO-REQUISITE: English 28 and 31 and 67 or equivalent; and Child<br />

Development 1. Verification of Mantoux test (or chest X-Ray) is required. A survey course<br />

which compares and analyzes historical as well as current models of early childhood<br />

programs. Students examin the underlying theoretical principles of developmentally<br />

appropriate practices applied to programs and environments. Emphasis is placed on the<br />

key role of relationships, constructive adult-child interactions and teaching strategies<br />

that support physical, social, creative and intellectual development of children and lead<br />

to desired learning outcomes. Professional development and career paths based upon<br />

CA Child Developmental Permit Matrix will be discussed.<br />

CHILDREN I (CSU) - 3.00 UNITS<br />

PREREQUISITE: Child Development 1 and 2 with a satisfactory grade, and English 28 or<br />

31 or equivalent with satisfactory grade.<br />

DESCRIPTION: Students develop and implement creative curriculum for young children.<br />

Activities include: sensorimotor, manipulative, art, music, movement, and dramatic play<br />

experiences. Emphasis is on environments that promote creativity and the role of the<br />

teacher. Enrollment recommended in CD84 or 85: Child Development Labs, one hour<br />

TBA a week to develop activities and lessons.<br />

CHILD DEVELOPMENT 007 - INTRODUCTION TO<br />

CURRICULUM IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (CSU) -<br />

3.00 UNITS<br />

PREREQUISITE: CD 2<br />

Students learn and develop the knowledge and skills to provide appropriate curriculum<br />

and environments for young children from birth to age 6. Students examine a teacher’s<br />

role in supporting development and fostering the joy of learning for all young children<br />

uising observation and assessment strategies emphasizing the essential role of play.<br />

Planning, implementation and evaluation of curriculum will include but not be limited<br />

to: language and literacy, social and emotional learning, sensory learning, art and<br />

creativity, math, natural and physical sciences. NOTE: This class replaces CD 4. If you<br />

took CD 4 you don not need to take this class.<br />

CO-REQUISITE: English 21 or 73 or equivalent. DESCRIPTION: Study of the<br />

interrelationship of health, safety and nutrition and the impact on children’s growth and<br />

development. Students learn how to implement a comprehensive nutritional program,<br />

use universal precautions and implement emergency procedures.<br />

CO-REQUISITE: English 21 and 67 or equivalent. Students examine the developing<br />

child in a societal context focusing on the interrelationship of the family, school and<br />

community and emphasizes historical and socio-cultural factors. The processes of<br />

socialization and identity development will be highlighted, showing the importance of<br />

respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families. Some topics<br />

covered are: social influences on parenting styles, communication, child-rearing and<br />

the relationships between the child, family and the school is studied.<br />

CHILD DEVELOPMENT 022 - PRACTICUM IN CHILD<br />

DEVELOPMENT I (CSU) - 4.00 UNITS<br />

PREREQUISITE: Child Development 3 and 4. NOTES: Students must show proof of a<br />

current negative TB test (Mantoux Test) or chest x-ray within the last two years. The<br />

Department of Social Services Child Care Licensing Division and the Department of<br />

Health require all individuals working with children in a paid or voluntary position to have<br />

a negative Mantoux test or chest x-ray every two years. (Title 22 101216). Students are<br />

assigned to an approved Child Development program to demonstrate developmentally<br />

appropriate early childhood teaching competencies under guided supervision. Students<br />

utilize practical classroom experiences to make connections between theory and<br />

practice, develop professional behaviors, and build a comprehensive understanding<br />

of children and families. Child centered, play-oriented approaches to teaching,<br />

learning, assessment and knowledge of curriculum content areas is emphasized as<br />

student teachers design, implement and evaluate experiences that promote positive<br />

development and learning.<br />

DEVELOPMENT II (CSU) - 4.00 UNITS<br />

PREREQUISITE: Child Development 22 with a satisfactory grade. DESCRIPTION:<br />

State law requires a TB test (Mantoux Test) or chest x-ray. Please bring proof of your<br />

TB clearance to the first class. NOTE: In addition to the seminar class, students are<br />

required to complete a minimum of 90 hours TBA at an APPROVED field site. To be<br />

eligible for field placement, students MUST be available two days a week, either from<br />

8:00am - 12:00 Noon OR 12:00 Noon - 4:00pm on MW, or TTh, or WF. Priority field<br />

placement will be given to students who meet this schedule.<br />

chest x-ray is required. DESCRIPTION: A study of infant/toddler development from birth<br />

through toddlerhood. The birth process, attachment, temperament and development<br />

as well as responsive parenting/care-giving and culturally sensitive environments that<br />

support development will be covered.<br />

ADVISORY: English 21 or 73 or equivalent. Verification of Mantoux test (or chest x-ray).<br />

DESCRIPTION: May be offered in alternate semesters. Principles of inclusive respectful<br />

care-giving for infants and toddlers within a variety of program designs. Topics cover<br />

typical and atypical development; age-appropriate environments; health, safety and<br />

licensing issues, as well as observation assessments, family communications, home<br />

visiting, resource and current research.<br />

CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOR (CSU) - 3.00 UNITS<br />

Prerequisite: Child Development 1 or equivalent and English 28 and 67. Verification<br />

of annual Mantoux test or chest x-ray is required. Students learn the appropriate use<br />

of assessment and observation strategies to document development, growth, play<br />

and learning to join with families and professionals in promoting children’s success.<br />

Recording strategies, rating systems, portfolios, and multiple assessment tools are<br />

explored.<br />
